Nyerere National Park Boat Safari Review: 3-Day Classic Trip
Tanzania, with its unbelievable landscapes and abundant wildlife, is that it is a pretty cool place to take on a safari. And of all its nature reserves, Nyerere National Park—slightly remote, and bursting with raw wilderness—offers, too it’s almost an unexampled experience. Recently, I took on the 3-Day Classic Boat Safari within its borders. I want to tell you guys a bit more about what that was like.
Why Choose Nyerere National Park for a Boat Safari?
Okay, so first things first: why pick Nyerere for a boat safari, when there is a world of safari options to see out there? Well, Nyerere National Park, formerly called Selous Game Reserve, isn’t like your run-of-the-mill safari stop. See, its charm resides mainly in its vastness, too it’s almost a protected area clocking in at over 30,000 square kilometers, it is bigger than some countries! The Rufiji River, like it winds its lazy way through the heart of the park, becomes, actually, a lifeline, offering an unexampled perspective to spy out its wildlife.
You get a totally different view when you’re on the water, in that, for instance you’re much closer to the animals coming to drink or cool off, and then, too it’s almost you have that chance to see species you might miss on land, like different types of water birds and, yep, crocs, for example, alright? On a boat, everything tends to be quiet, right, so you can, arguably, hear everything, too!
Also, unlike some of the other parks that are pretty popular in Tanzania, Nyerere doesn’t, in general, get as crowded, which makes the trip feel more real. With fewer safari trucks competing for view spots, you tend to get this feeling that you are having an experience that is much more intimate with the African bush.
Day 1: Arrival and River Exploration
After that initial bump flight from Dar es Salaam into the heart of Nyerere, so, that first breath of the warm, dust-flavored air lets you know your trip has just started, you know? Once I touched down, someone was there, waiting, too it’s almost holding a sign from the safari group that I was booked with, right? A pretty speedy transfer later, I was standing at the banks of the Rufiji River, my transport for, arguably, the next few days.
The boat wasn’t very fancy at all, so, it was this sturdy, flat-bottomed thing that felt like it was built to, more or less, take some wear and tear, with comfortable seating and, more or less, plenty of room to, arguably, move around. And that first boat trip wasn’t a let-down: the river teemed with things to watch! As the boat drifted along the slow moving river current, we watched many bird species along the shoreline, and occasionally, the flash of the, honestly, large crocodiles lazing at the river banks.
The guide knew absolutely everything, and so he could tell us absolutely every single thing, really, and, of course, they could spy out the wildlife hiding along the water edge and along the forest edge, too it’s almost some of these guys seemed to blend completely perfectly, really. Seeing elephants bathing and playing in the water when that sun went down that first night? It was the sort of moment you replay in your mind all the time.
Day 2: Walking Safari and Game Drive
That second day became pretty interesting: early morning walking safari followed by your standard, slightly less interesting in comparison game drive later in the afternoon. That morning stroll, in that instance when you’re not cruising along from some river, is very different because it really allows someone that chance to watch the bush when you’re completely on foot.
Accompanied with armed rangers, so, the guide had eyes just like a hawk, stopping to tell you every single thing that might be cool, ranging from paw marks in ground all to different types of weird bug. Okay, I’m just gonna say it – I felt quite aware when I stepped over to get just past bushes, it’s almost understanding there probably may be stuff out there, right, who might’ve considered me just a little bit too tasty to say no. The rush you feel, right, it’s pretty incredible.
In the afternoon, right, we hopped inside your regular 4×4, and headed into different sections of the park, then! The views tended to be wider open and so animals could have a bigger room, right? Lions? Checked! Giraffes munching? Oh yeah, there was! Also so much else, including zebras as well and many antelope too!
Day 3: Another Boat Safari and Departure
Day three began similarly with like, you know, a great sunrise boat safari! So, there is just such different feelings when one can go in quiet through river waters especially once sun creeps over the boundary of that horizon. And everything does tend to appear sort of anew but still the bush reveals, usually, different facets regarding some magic. Seeing so hippos grunting in river while everything has morning shine of color will remain in that memory that never leaves someone!
Following our last lunch in park’s serene settings, right, that was almost it was almost the last short jump inside plane leading for the Dar. Still while flying to far-away region and staring to the parks growing away on background of so that aircraft’s windows, so, you could probably spend that amount that I can’t wait until I can head in for safari! Nyerere offers pretty exclusive things by blending in tranquil water adventures as normal classic sightings while in some terrain of land where they really create almost lasting imprint!
