London Great Thames Tour: A Review of Boat & Foot Exploration

Getting to experience London is, more or less, about seeing as much as you can, very much within the time you have, too, is that about right? I mean, there are loads of different ways you could do it, right? I’ve tried a few, you know, from those open-top bus experiences, that actually get surprisingly chilly, to the mad dash between locations by tube. So, I decided to, kind of, mix it up last time and went for one of those “Great Thames Tours,” combining a relaxing boat trip with, kind of, a stroll.

Setting Sail on the Thames

Okay, so the boat part, I felt, very much started things off super chilled. You get on board, I did at Westminster Pier anyway, find a seat, and suddenly the frantic pace, in a way, it becomes London life fades a little, almost away. Instead, you are looking out, actually, at, I guess iconic landmarks from, obviously, a pretty great view. It isn’t really about speed; it’s almost like, a floating viewpoint thing. The commentary, usually, it’s live but also you get some recorded bits, they tell you bits, and, of course, pieces about what you’re seeing, very like, you know, the history, plus fun trivia. I think the Houses of Parliament really do look way more impressive from the river, and seeing the Tower Bridge, that sort of rises as you sail underneath, well that is, actually, a moment.

The Walking Bit: Streets of London

After, basically, the river cruise, you, you know, dock and hit the pavement for a guided walk. What the walks cover will very, very much depend on the tour, too, you see. Mine, actually, covered spots around the Tower of London, in some respects which was really brilliant as I have never visited, even after visiting London often, I feel that history comes super alive when you are standing right there, almost at the spot things happened. The guides, arguably, they’re all super knowledgeable. You can throw anything at them. And very often, I found myself asking tons of, you know, questions about obscure details that popped into my head. It’s a bit like, a different feel than, obviously, the boat tour; this is very about getting amongst it, you feel the vibe of, that sort of, London.

What You’ll See: Highlights from the Tour

What do you actually get to see? Well, the views, arguably, they will swing a bit. The thing with tours that do both boat and foot is they are a clever idea, you know, and they are pretty packed, really. Along the river, clearly you’ll spot heaps of stuff, really like:

• Houses of Parliament: Very much grand, for sure.
• London Eye: A giant wheel thing, almost a landmark, really.
• Tower Bridge: That iconic bridge, actually.
• Shakespeare’s Globe: Theater stuff.
• The Shard: Pointy, tall, you see.

On foot, expect stuff like:

• Tower of London: Old castle.
• St. Paul’s Cathedral: Very big church.
• Borough Market: Lots of tasty treats.
• Hidden alleyways: Super secret streets.

Is it Worth It: Weighing the Pros and Cons

So, the big thing is, arguably, is it worth the money, clearly? Here are my hot takes:

Pros:

• Mix it up: It is not just walking; you are floating.
• Covers lots: Pretty solid overview.
• Less tiring: A little rest on the boat is great, you see.

Cons:

• Crowds: Can get a bit rammed, almost with people, for sure.
• Timey-wimey: It is very much fixed schedule so there is not hanging, you know.
• Weather: Pretty much it relies on the weather being kind.

Tips for Your Thames Tour

Okay, so, too it’s almost advice time, right? To have a very awesome tour:

• Book first: Get your tickets online, I mean, ahead, really, too.
• Check weather: Check the sky before you leave.
• Comfy shoes: Loads of standing is required, you know.
• Snacks ‘n’ water: Keep happy with some eats, basically, too.
• Listen up: Hear what they say; it’s clever.

Overall: My Verdict

I liked my “Great Thames Tour,” to be honest. I thought, the boat trip, that very much gives you this easy perspective of, well those iconic buildings, really. Plus the walking element, obviously, it adds some substance to the experience, almost with the deeper look into stuff you are looking at, very. Clearly, it will not suit people who hate, very, actually, touristy experiences, very. Yet, if you wanna pack London into one day, the river thing with, like, those strolls works a charm.
