This area’s got that wild, natural feel and trust me, the photos simply don’t do it justice. I’m going to share all about my adventure to both these spots, because a little planning can totally amplify the experience. You might be wondering if the tour is actually worth the time, energy and, let’s be real, those potentially slippery steps. Keep reading to find out my take on this popular Lombok excursion.

Getting to Senaru: The Gateway to the Waterfalls

Senaru Lombok

First things first, you’ve gotta get to Senaru. Usually, people do this trip either from Senggigi or Mataram. To be honest, the drive to Senaru can be quite the adventure in itself. As you head up north, expect winding roads that are basically snaking around the hillsides, too it’s almost scenic routes showing you absolutely gorgeous views. Think rice paddies that appear terraced like massive green staircases and, very, very occasionally, glimpses of the coastline far, far away. I’d advise leaving early; very early in the morning too, for two reasons. First off, you dodge some of the heavier tourist traffic which can make the roads rather slow. Secondly, you actually get a whole bunch more time to just enjoy the waterfalls and take photos without huge crowds. Anyway, as a matter of fact, plan for like, a two to three-hour journey from the popular tourist hubs in the south. Or, even better, maybe you’d like to spend the night in Senaru so you’re already fresh and ready to go when morning hits?

Hiring a Guide: Is It Really Needed?

Now, about those guides… At the entry point, basically, they will come up to you, very eagerly offering their services, and that may well leave you asking yourself, do I genuinely need one? The path to Sendang Gile, it’s often quite well-marked and pretty straightforward, but actually, it’s Tiu Kelep where things can get a little, I mean just a little, trickier. A lot of people I bumped into who decided to go it alone actually mentioned some spots along the way that had been a bit more slippery or confusing. As I was saying, with a guide, you not only have somebody to show you the safest path, but basically, they are able to also give you some of the local insight – those historical snippets and folklore that definitely add an extra layer to your trip. Another thing to consider is actually supporting the local economy, which I like to do if I can. Expect to bargain a bit on the price. Or, even better, sort one out via your accommodation. Remember to confirm what the tour will cover; basically is it just guiding, or does it include things such as entrance fees? It’s usually negotiable too it’s almost, so, you might as well try to negotiate.

Sendang Gile: Cascades of Beauty

Sendang Gile Waterfall

So, Sendang Gile. Once you descend down the series of steps, so you’ll start hearing the roar way, way before you actually see it. Emerging from the forest canopy to be confronted by the majestic sight of Sendang Gile, it could be, dropping down in tiers through dense vegetation, is a sight to behold, I have to say. Most of the viewing area can get a little crowded, specifically mid-morning, very early or late afternoon is when you’re gonna find slightly fewer folks. You could dip your toes in the water if you are feeling daring but I will tell you, that it can get pretty cold. Or, for instance, there’s nothing really stopping you from simply sitting on one of the rocks and just fully drinking in the view, too it’s almost an ideal backdrop for those reflective travel moments. It might be good to know that this waterfall is also viewed by locals as having a special kind of power, with beliefs around it potentially keeping you looking young if you splash yourself with its water; very intriguing.

Tiu Kelep: The Real Adventure Begins

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

From Sendang Gile to Tiu Kelep is basically where the “adventure” cranks up a notch. You have to actually go on from Sendang Gile a little bit further, basically, over a small rocky river, then just push your way through sections of forest – very, very easily passable, that I will say. Remember to watch your step though, too it’s almost, because those rocks can be quite slippery. It’s actually getting close to Tiu Kelep where it genuinely feels like you are entering some secret world. Very high cliffs surround you, just festooned with greenery, the anticipation absolutely builds as the path narrows. If the roar of Sendang Gile was something, Tiu Kelep’s definitely takes things to a totally different level. What’s super different here is the sheer force; a massive curtain of water which pounds into the pool right at its base. In fact, be prepared to get really wet should you actually venture anywhere close.

What to Expect at Tiu Kelep

Swimming Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Firstly, a fair warning; the spray from Tiu Kelep basically is powerful and you’re totally going to get drenched, too it’s almost impossible not to, as I found out, and your phone will be so wet. You might wanna invest in a waterproof case, should you want photos right there by the falls. Or, arguably, leave it up the top of the cliff where your guide may well be, if you choose to hire one. Also, that pool beneath the falls, too it’s almost, you might wanna just keep in mind that it is surprisingly cold, you know? It’s actually pretty refreshing after the hike. You know what though? If you swim close enough you might just discover there’s a smaller waterfall behind the main one. It’s really a totally great spot for photos but also great, just to feel the awesome magnitude of nature all around. It can also get rather busy here, depending on the time of day, therefore be prepared to share the space.

Essential Tips for an Awesome Trip

what to bring hiking

Good footwear can definitely make or break your trip. The paths could be quite slippery, and very sturdy sandals, and even better, hiking shoes, they really will allow you to deal with the terrain so much easier. A lightweight rain jacket; might be good, specifically if you plan to get up close with Tiu Kelep; Or, similarly, basically, something to protect any expensive camera gear. As you get back you can quickly dry yourself. Bringing a dry bag can definitely save the day to help just keep any electronic devices, and any personal items, really nice and dry. Swimming gear, that actually might be handy if the thought of actually taking a dip beneath those powerful falls grabs you. Water and snacks is pretty vital, as there actually are no shops past the entrance, therefore pack something just to keep your energy up. Finally, being respectful to the local guides and locals is very good. This is not only very appreciated, it helps to have the kind of positive interactions that elevate your trip.
