Dusseldorf Old Town Walking Tour: A Candid Review
Planning a visit to Dusseldorf and thinking about a walking tour of the Altstadt, which is their Old Town? That area is pretty neat, with all kinds of stories hiding in plain sight. The tour, naturally, started in the Marktplatz, which is the market square, basically. I found this was actually pretty easy to locate from the train station. Our guide seemed quite amicable, pretty easy to spot with a small sign. We got a bit of background on the city’s beginnings and the significance of that square in its long history. Apparently, he really was giving it his all to appear friendly, I can say!
That is, it felt like we were kicking off a chat between companions. Also, there weren’t too many people, something which always has me exhale a big sigh of relief. Small groups are better so you can ask your questions and it remains, more or less, a more intimate occasion, I always believe.
Through the Lanes: Key Stops and Stories
Right, so what do you end up actually seeing? We wandered through those narrow alleyways, discovering a few places I probably would’ve walked past, without even noticing them, is that correct?. The guide went through snippets about everything from some unique architectural facts to, just like, some tales tied to well-known figures who once walked these same paths, actually. There really was something that just jumped out at me when learning that Dusseldorf actually boasts over 250 places of enjoyment in Old Town!
Like your St. Lambertus Church, just for example, whose twisted spire appears as the consequence of the building falling unwell at some point throughout its existence, actually, not something I realized till the tour was complete! I was equally drawn in by that story of Jan Wellem’s equestrian statue. Apparently, that sculptor played a joke to one, now nameless, debt collector of Jan Wellem. I am always on the hunt to be taught these fun factoids, and so, I really thought these historical titbits improved it by far. How interesting.
The Köbes: A Dive into Local Tradition
OK, so one highlight for me? It involved the Köbes. That may well not mean a lot to you right now, but a Köbes is just your traditional waiter at a brewery-restaurant, typically sporting, kind of, a blue apron, you see. We received insight on the culture, kind of, revolving around this character as well as Altbier, obviously the regional brew. Now that I believe, provided us a bit of local taste which a tourist just wouldn’t generally notice.
I just discovered it funny how the Köbes are not just bringing Altbier, rather they’re more than happy to tease consumers and take the mick from all sorts of people. This interaction truly supplies this sense of Dusseldorf culture. Just your Köbes generally just place Altbier down without even being instructed to do so! Seems they just trade you to another till they get annoyed of it, potentially not how most travellers would probably expect. In the end, there are these tiny minor quirks which have a metropolis full of personality.
Tipping Time: Was it Worth it?
And then came the moment to chip in. That is just a difficult portion of the equation as it is down to each individual to decide what is suitable, basically. The amount that I tipped was dependant on the standard that the tour really reached to, I think. Was the guy engaging, extremely, plus knowledgeable and pleasant, really? Do I think that it added value to my adventure, alright? I decided to split with €15 which in a way, might have really been reasonably generous; and yet I considered that I got my money’s worth easily.
