Ibiza Sunset Boat Tour Review: Water Sports & Open Bar
So, you’re thinking of grabbing one of those sunset boat tours in Ibiza, right? Very understandable! These tours are like, almost, the quintessential Ibiza experience –sun, sea, a nice boat, maybe a drink or two. I actually spent a day out on one recently that, supposedly, included water sports, an open bar, and tapas. I want to share what that was like for me, maybe, give you an idea if this type of thing is up your alley!
Setting Sail: What to Anticipate
Firstly, getting to the meeting spot, that’s Playa d’en Bossa for my trip, I quickly noticed there are so many different companies offering these boat tours! Just, almost, walking down the beach is like, a sensory overload of signs and people trying to catch your attention. Arriving, getting checked in, and stepping onto the boat, that was an adventure of its own. Mine held a good crowd; probably like 50 or so people, of all ages and backgrounds. Immediately, it feels like a relaxed party vibe as they tend to bump tunes from the moment people are onboard. Just, maybe scope the playlists beforehand because there is a huge range to consider; not every DJ plays something people agree with.
Finding a spot is usually the first challenge. Is there a prime place to get the sun? Is there shaded spot somewhere, you know, for when you’ve had enough? Just, also, keep in mind where the bar is! Most people headed for the front of the boat to, it seems, soak up the rays, get the best ocean views, and grab the inevitable boat selfie. If you need more cover and, just a little, peace, maybe head towards the back; but obviously the closer you are to the bar, the more quickly and efficiently one may or may not take advantage of the free drinks.
Water Sports: Taking a Plunge
OK, so water sports were a big selling point for this trip, right? It can be very exciting. Many tours, seemingly, will advertise things like snorkeling, paddleboarding, or even jet skiing, so mine had paddleboards and snorkeling gear on board. In reality, because there are 50 other people onboard too it’s almost a bit limited with, seemingly, everyone trying to grab a board at once. The snorkeling was OK. You’re not seeing a tropical reef out there but it, I would say, is an excellent change from sunbathing and gives you the opportunity to take a dip in that clear Mediterranean water! Very important; see how many options they have for water sports, and how they arrange that bit of the schedule. Are you just left on your own?
That the boat stops at an especially cool spot too? Are, maybe, trained guides around? Depending on how well you handle that kind of experience and what, apparently, is important to you; ask beforehand! Is it an open ocean free for all where the expectation is people are confident swimmers, or that it is, basically, closely managed where anyone new or needing instruction is patiently helped in an easily understood way?
Open Bar & Tapas: Food and Drinks Ahoy!
This, maybe, is a point of interest for many – an open bar. The reality here is that it’s an open bar… with, I’m sorry to report, very limited choices. On my trip, we’re talking beer, sangria, soft drinks, and water. Maybe do not anticipate a mixologist crafting custom cocktails. But you know what? It does the job! The staff keeps the drinks flowing and it’s hard to argue with unlimited sangria, especially under the Ibiza sun. Do they have mocktails or sodas without sugar if needed?
Then, too, the tapas. Tapas is, maybe, a strong word. It can be, arguably, more like snacks. Think little sandwiches, olives, maybe some cheese and crackers. Enough to line your stomach, anyway, as people are, generally, enjoying the open bar. This, I found, did vary considerably on different cruises, so asking for the specific food menu for a tour might be worthwhile if you are planning on eating your lunch onboard; some companies will take it pretty seriously while others will basically phone it in with whatever stuff is the cheapest! So it is probably worth checking this when comparing deals.
The Ibiza Sunset: The Main Attraction
I’m guessing this bit is, clearly, why you are taking the sunset boat tour to begin with. It doesn’t fail. Being out on the water as the sun sets over the Mediterranean is something special. I want you to soak up the view. Maybe that collective, “oooh” from everyone on the boat as the sky explodes with color. This really gives a sense of peace that is unlike anything else I’ve seen.
Also, a bunch of companies time their cruises, almost, so that the boat, just a little, positions itself with a good view of the Cafe del Mar area; that offers some seriously amazing views. What, probably, you also discover is there is an opportunity to hear a few more chilled DJ sets as those places crank up their sound to full blast. This is something really special as, apparently, most cruises make an attempt to get up close. What will happen is you get that kind of “wall of sound” feeling as multiple places let rip.
Is It Worth It? Final Thoughts
The question then is; would I recommend an Ibiza sunset boat tour with water sports and an open bar? As a matter of fact, it depends! The water sports might not, just a little, be the core focus; just anticipate a lot of people with the same idea. The open bar is fun, very, very, but might not be up to everybody’s personal drinking preferences. So too, the tapas could, apparently, be hit or miss, check what is served with your chosen operator before departure. You may also like to check how long is available to do your preferred water sports.
As I was saying; the sunset? The experience of being out on the water with a great group of people? Honestly, really good! This, honestly, is a thing you won’t experience anywhere else. If you’re prepared and keep your expectations in check, you can, certainly, have a blast. If you need very specific guarantees, I might just recommend, probably, arranging your own boat. Ultimately, if the water is calm, the drinks flow, the people are cool and that sunset happens, you’ll wonder why you have never done that before! So next time, definitely be doing this sooner in any vacation in the region. Just make sure, also, you allow time to plan and pick operators carefully!
