Pak Ou Caves & Kuang Si Falls Tour: A Personal Review

Okay, so you’re thinking about heading out to Laos and experiencing the ‘Private Explore Pak Ou Cave Kuang Si Waterfall with Lunch’ thing? Well, I’ve just gotten back, and I’m very excited to tell you just how it was. I’ll cover everything from the boat trip up the Mekong to that unreal turquoise water at Kuang Si. Hopefully, my little rundown gives you a clearer view of whether this trip is totally your speed.

Setting off on the Mekong River

Mekong River boat trip

Basically, the day starts bright and relatively early with a pickup from your hotel. From there, it’s off to the boat. As a matter of fact, that river trip on the Mekong itself is pretty magical. Seeing the riverbanks slide by, that are covered with villages and the daily goings-on of local life, it’s pretty peaceful. It is almost meditative to be out on the water, and the views of the surrounding landscapes alone are possibly worth the trip. Make sure to keep that camera very handy because you are going to want to document this bit!

Then too it’s important to remember sun protection, a hat, and shades because the sun can be intense out there on the water. Also, very bringing a bottle of water would be helpful. As I was saying, while the boats do have some coverage, you will likely spend a fair bit of the trip exposed to the elements, so prepare for it!

Exploring the Mysterious Pak Ou Caves

Pak Ou Caves Buddhas

Anyway, after a stretch of peaceful sailing, you arrive at the Pak Ou Caves, that are very tucked away in a limestone cliff where the Mekong and Ou Rivers actually meet. It is really kind of an amazing sight. As a matter of fact, the caves, split into a lower and upper section, are super filled with literally thousands of Buddha images, that range in style and size. As a matter of fact, these images have been left there by pilgrims for centuries, which makes it that deeply sacred and a must-see place. To that effect, some of the Buddhas are pretty ancient, and others look quite new.

Also, take your time here! It’s also interesting to explore and examine the various Buddha figures, and appreciate the site. Likewise, many people dash in and out but if you really want to experience the vibes, I feel that you should slow down. The upper cave, I will say, does require a bit of a climb, yet the views from the top, that overlook the rivers, are totally worth the steps. Oh and remember your flashlight because the top cave isn’t especially well lit!

Lunch with a View

And then next thing you know, you’ll be ready for some food. That’s actually one of the best parts, and honestly, the lunch on this trip is just that perfect little break you’ll need. As I was saying, typically lunch is served at a spot with lovely views over the river, making dining experience pretty spectacular. More or less, it is that kind of moment where you just chill, that is taking it all in, and gearing up for the afternoon.

In short, food options tend to be local fare, very showcasing the flavors of Laos. While the selection can vary, expect rice, vegetable dishes, and a meat option. First, it’s usually prepared and presented pretty well. I would also point out, this is an awesome time to connect with your guide, you know, ask anything about Lao culture or the places that you’re visiting. And in my experience, they’re really a fountain of info.

Swimming in Kuang Si Falls

Alright, so now for perhaps that very real highlight for many folks – the Kuang Si Falls. Also, these waterfalls are unreal. Those tiered cascades of that incredibly turquoise water? It’s that place from the postcards, totally! You very probably could easily spend hours here swimming in those clear pools or exploring those falls and forest around them. So too it’s an absolute blast.

Now, a tip for everyone coming after me – bring your swimwear so that you can utilize the swimming holes at the base of falls. Similarly to some people are content just admiring the view, but if you are up for that refreshing dip, then do it. Anyway, also be sure you take the short hike to the top of falls for a totally different vantage point; it’s super worth the modest effort involved. Of course, I recommend that you take really careful because those trails can be very slippery. Seriously!

What to Consider Before Booking

Luang Prabang tour considerations

Now, here is that really honest lowdown, okay? First, this tour is quite popular, very which means Kuang Si Falls, you know, specifically, can get very busy, typically during peak season. If that’s something that really puts you off, I would say, perhaps you could consider going on that tour during that off-season, or else that super early start, could beat some of the crowds.

Still too, be mindful of what the weather is like. To that effect, rainy season in Laos can kind of influence the color of the water at Kuang Si, and it will make paths really wet and slick. Alright, and that said, do keep a handle on your stuff because petty theft, as always, is unfortunately a thing, even at that tourist place.
