Tokyo-Mount Fuji-Hakone Day Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Looking to get away from the heart of Tokyo but short on time? The Tokyo-Mount Fuji-Hakone day tour is, almost, offered by many providers and promises to be a whirlwind trip to some pretty fantastic spots. That said, is it really worth squeezing so much into a single day? I thought I’d share my thoughts, and observations of taking the journey so you, maybe, can make a well-considered choice.

What’s the Big Deal with This Tour Anyway?

Okay, so what makes this tour interesting? Mount Fuji is that huge, majestic peak that is incredibly famous. To many it’s more than just scenery, but something symbolic to the locals too. And then there is Hakone which is known, usually, for views of Fuji, also for its hot springs and cool nature.

Now, putting those two together for a single day trip out of Tokyo? Well, the idea is certainly tempting, mostly, especially if you want to get your Fuji fix but don’t have heaps of time. You know, like your boss expects you in the workplace tomorrow!

First Stop: Catching Those Fuji Views

Let’s get real a little bit; one of the main attractions, I guess, is spotting Mount Fuji. The tour I picked did its very best to get us some great lookouts, often stopping at spots around Lake Kawaguchiko. As a matter of fact the weather plays a pretty large role, alright; Fuji might be, kind of, hiding behind clouds. In some respects I’d say the tour guides usually are pretty clued up about this, actually, and often try other locations to get the best, or any, chance of a glimpse. As I was saying you will need patience, and to cross those fingers!

One particular highlight can be the Arakura Sengen Shrine. A bit of a climb up many steps, you see, but that sight of the pagoda with Mount Fuji is literally postcard stuff. By the way it’s crazy popular though, be armed for quite the throng!

Hakone: Volcanic Hotspots and Artistic Things

The Hakone portion provides variety. You tend to find things like a boat trip on Lake Ashi, a little bit which is quite peaceful as you are surrounded by pretty views. The Hakone Open-Air Museum is almost, something different too, really. Is that modern sculptures dotted around green areas, is that right? Then, there’s Owakudani, so, with those volcanic hot springs and the opportunity to taste black eggs, basically, supposedly that can give your life a slight boost.

Getting between locations, often, is rather smooth with different forms of transportation included, you know? Cable cars that offer peekaboo glimpses of volcanic hot springs, is that trains winding their way through scenic routes – really, all make it more exciting than just seeing scenery whizz by from a bus window, basically.

Private Tour Perks, Surely

Choosing a private tour option usually, offers some advantages, obviously. A personal driver and a separate vehicle means, generally, more freedom. Or you want to dawdle a little at one spot, really, but swiftly skip somewhere else. That extra comfort after a busy day might be great, too, alright?

Now, there’s the guidance element, okay? Having someone on hand who is full of info about the areas might be, in some respects, a total plus. I mean things like knowing quiet places to appreciate Fuji without tons of tourists can definitely make the whole feel extra good, literally.

Downsides? A Bit of a Whirlwind

Let’s get down to brass tacks for a while: fitting all of that into one day can mean it is rushed. Lingering too much in one place almost, cuts into time somewhere else. Travel between sites might feel like, you see, a noticeable part of your day too, alright. That feeling when, you, sort of, barely scratch the surface can nag away a little.

Thinking about budget, a private trip for the day costs more as you’d expect than going on a huge bus tour, like your trip on a massive yellow school bus. Okay? Deciding on the cost means weighing what things are really worth for a unique feel versus keeping costs manageable. I mean I found that worth thinking through!

So, Is It a “Yes” or a “No?”

In my eyes the Tokyo-Mount Fuji-Hakone tour could be, honestly, an exciting peek at what those locations provide if time isn’t exactly generous. You do get some super views and cool things, usually, even when the timetable seems sort of packed. In that case choosing a private arrangement can enhance how smoothly everything runs, too. Okay?

Are you a very relaxed traveller wanting a more deeper experience, you see? Then it could be better spread it all over a couple of relaxed days instead, actually. By the way for those with only short time to play with? That Mount Fuji-Hakone day is something really interesting to think about, too!

Things to Think about Before You Go

• Weather Watch: Seriously check the outlook for a bit! What could be ideal conditions for catching Fuji is usually sunny and not cloudy.
• Layers: From what I saw mountain spots tend to shift with temperatures pretty rapidly; keeping a jumper handy might be beneficial.
• Comfy Shoes: There will be quite a bit of moving about under your own steam, so wear things for happy feet.
• E-ticket or Physical Tickets?: See if you have tickets stored on a phone/ device or not! A tiny bit which you would do before showing up just to lessen potential issues is very smart.
