Zanzibar Tour: Prison Island, Spice Farm, Jozani + Lunch Review

So, you’re thinking about going on that Zanzibar tour, you know, the one that takes you to Prison Island, a spice farm, and Jozani Forest, right? Well, that sounds like a good outing. That very tour seems to be very popular with those visiting Zanzibar, and there is a good reason, or three, for it. The tour promises a mix of history, nature, and, like, that yummy Zanzibar vibe. But is it actually worth your time and, like, your money? This review is actually, truly gonna get into what the tour really gives you, sharing, like, some thoughts to assist you, like, when it comes to figuring out whether it’s right for you, and stuff. That sounds pretty helpful, almost.

Prison Island: History with a Pinch of Tortoise

Prison Island Zanzibar Tortoises

Alright, the tour usually starts off with, that’s right, a boat trip to Prison Island, now also called Changuu Island. The journey there might be just a bit bumpy, which is also a bit exciting. The history of the island, actually, is that, apparently, it served, at one point, as a place where they held slaves who were, seemingly, too sick to sell, that kind of thing, and later it was a quarantine station. Pretty dark when you think about it. Though the prison was actually never used as a prison, just, kind of, interesting, isn’t it?

The main draw, arguably, are the giant Aldabra tortoises. Like, wow, these creatures are super old and absolutely giant! You will be allowed, you see, to get very close, seemingly, to actually pet them, and actually take a bunch of photos. I actually found it a bit surreal, you know, standing right next to these super old animals. You might just consider this: the area is, typically, very crowded, and sometimes, just a little bit touristy, though the tortoises do still somehow make it a very memorable visit. I would even recommend going to the quieter side of the island and seeing the colony of seldom seen peacocks. It’s easy to see them walking along the pathways, they also seem to be rather friendly.

Spice Farm: Aromatic Adventure for your Senses

Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour

Next up, you will probably go to a spice farm. This is, actually, one of the most amazing parts of the tour. When you first arrive, there will likely be workers who actually welcome you with songs and, yes, even spice necklaces! It smells, sort of, absolutely amazing. It really does.

During the farm outing, you will seemingly learn about so many kinds of spices, like cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and, that’s right, a whole lot more. That guide might even just climb up a tree to grab some fresh samples! You can, apparently, touch, smell, and just taste all the spices and fruits. It really is interesting to learn what each is actually used for, too, that kind of thing. I found out that the lipstick tree can, apparently, be used as makeup, and also, yes, as a face paint too. I didn’t realize there was a difference too it’s almost funny, honestly.

Heads up, very: they will attempt to sell you, like, all sorts of spices at the end, of course, which, you know, it’s almost fine, though, you might feel, you see, a tiny bit pressured. Make sure to really barter, as the first price is, like, likely higher than it should be, in my honest opinion. That, of course, might almost go without actually being said.

Jozani Forest: Monkeys and Magic

Jozani Forest Monkeys

After all the aromatic spices, you’ll probably go check out Jozani Forest. That’s actually pretty cool in that it feels, sort of, absolutely different from, you know, everything else you might see in Zanzibar. It has, actually, a beautiful forest with all sorts of trees and plants.

The main, you see, appeal is, clearly, seeing the red colobus monkeys. They really only exist in Zanzibar, so that could just possibly be a pretty unique opportunity! They seem to be really acclimated to people, and may come super close, it seems. You can watch them hanging in the trees and actually just doing their own thing. As I was saying, remember not to feed them, just, kind of, because it may affect their diet and their natural behavior. I almost, certainly, didn’t, naturally.

You will probably get to take, as well, a walk across the mangrove swamp on a boardwalk. That has, of course, some lovely scenery and all types of interesting information about the ecosystem, in that location, that’s also pretty helpful. As I was saying, I liked getting a little walk there after that tour through the spice farm, alright?

Lunch: A Taste of Zanzibar

Zanzibar Lunch

That tour typically comes with, I think, a local food lunch. I like to have, or attempt, you see, to have this kind of cuisine during, or when, on, trips, usually. The food, probably, is served buffet-style, and it includes, clearly, a range of Zanzibar dishes. Think of like, rice, curries, grilled fish, and some local sides.

The setting can vary, right? Some tours seemingly take you to an eatery in Stone Town, and others, I almost find, arrange a meal at the spice farm itself. As a matter of fact, that quality is usually, kind of, almost decent, but the best part of it all can be trying all kinds of local tastes. At the end of the day, it probably may not be the fanciest meal ever, but it really just is that nice touch to end, as I was saying, that tour.

Is that Zanzibar Tour worth it?

Zanzibar travel

So, you really want the lowdown, as a matter of fact, right? The Zanzibar Prison Island, Spice Farm, and Jozani Forest tour that I took definitely just is something to see when, perhaps, you visit the island, usually, especially for you first-timers. As I was saying, it, really, is a well-rounded experience, giving you, I think, that cool combination of that, sort of, fascinating history, stunning nature, and, yes, scrumptious local tastes, honestly.

The trip could be, just a little bit packed, seemingly, and some parts seem a bit touristy, of course. That’s actually okay. Even if it feels very crammed and touristy sometimes, that tour, honestly, is still just a very awesome method, just, seemingly, to experience a little of what Zanzibar can, sometimes, be. It actually is pretty informative, often interesting, and clearly really rather tasty too! What I am saying is go for it!
