Zanzibar Adventure: Jozani Forest, Horse Riding, Beach & “The Rock”

Zanzibar excursions

Okay, so you’re thinking about Zanzibar, right? That tiny island, just off the coast of Tanzania. Beautiful beaches? For sure! Rich history? Totally! But also, what about seeing more than just the seaside? I took this excursion that involved Jozani Forest, some time horseback riding, a visit to Paje Beach, and then dinner at “The Rock” and figured I’d talk about that here, and help folks decide whether to sign up for something similar, as well!

Into the Green: Exploring Jozani Forest

Jozani Forest

The Jozani Forest is really the first stop on this crazy Zanzibar adventure, so you’re starting inland and seeing a landscape way beyond the typical beach image. You know, the forest itself, well it is the home of the Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. That name just rolls off the tongue. It’s almost this protected area, like, a little safe space for this one primate group that you won’t find anywhere else. Seeing them is almost this completely different thing than seeing regular monkeys – their reddish fur is, like, striking. And, seriously, they’re super playful, they jump all around, too, which, that can lead to lots of great photo moments.

Besides the monkeys, so, too, there’s something pretty awesome about wandering through the forest itself. It has this super dense canopy of trees, and that sunlight filters through it, which creates the coolest light effects. It tends to feel very calm and quiet, like the sounds of civilization are turned way down. You will probably get some descriptions of the local flora from the tour guides. But for me? Frankly, just being in nature, in that kind of natural cathedral, I find that pretty special.

Saddle Up: Horse Riding Escapade

Horseback riding

Following the peaceful hike among the trees, you actually then go on an interesting horseback riding outing. Look, I’m no pro rider, so don’t worry that this is some exclusive cowboy event; it’s pretty basic, actually! So the horses seem pretty calm and gentle, like, well-suited even if you’re a total beginner like myself. So it definitely has this laid-back vibe from the beginning, which is a big plus in my book!

That ride typically takes you along trails, maybe some parts near the beach, in a way, and so that mixture of terrain keeps it from getting boring. Trotting along and feeling the breeze? Frankly it’s almost this entirely different view than you get from just sitting in a vehicle. You see parts of the countryside most tourists might pass right by, too. A small thing maybe, but, like, for me? That’s the memory of the experience that really tends to stick.

Beach Bliss: Kicking Back at Paje

Paje Beach

Okay, so it is off to the coast next, and more specifically, to Paje Beach. You will read up that it’s a seriously famous spot for kitesurfing and that. And, clearly, you can give it a shot yourself. But you may rather just relax, unwind, maybe watch the folks zipping across the water doing their acrobatics.

Frankly, you might have seen beaches, but Paje does have that unique kind of Zanzibar charm. Fine, white sand? Obviously! Azure water that goes on and on? Naturally! But, well, maybe it’s this local culture blending with the tourism that makes the whole setting more lively, you know? Some claim the vibe is super chill and the scene is beautiful. But I don’t know anything about that, I’m just here to write.

Now, if you do just wanna chill out in the water, it stays super shallow for quite a way out. So if you’re not, like, a super strong swimmer? That’s reassuring, basically. It gets pretty warm, too. Lying in the shallows in that sunny spot is probably a core Zanzibar memory for me. Almost this really specific chill moment.

Dinner with a View: “The Rock” Restaurant

The Rock Zanzibar

As it happens, to wrap up the day, is this unique culinary experience over at “The Rock” Restaurant. That place is famous and almost this photo-perfect setting, being on, in a way, its own little rock formation out in the Indian Ocean. And, sure, getting there is almost its own thing. Low tide? You can just walk over. High tide? They’ll get you there in a boat.

Clearly the food emphasizes seafood, that being what folks generally hope for while on an island visit, and honestly it can be really quite fresh. Very good dishes, too! It’s maybe pricier than other spots, too, yet you are certainly mostly paying for that once-in-a-lifetime ocean backdrop and super unique vibe, is that right?

Is This Trip For You? A Few Things to Consider

So, who’s gonna love this particular combination of Jozani Forest, horse riding, Paje Beach, and “The Rock”? Well, pretty much anyone, like, who enjoys mixing things up, anyway. In case you don’t wanna just stay parked on the beach, then I’d consider it! So it’s got adventure, chill time, and cultural tastes mixed into just one package, alright?

Clearly the pace can be tiring. It will depend on if you want an adventure packed with stuff to do, or a real relaxing trip. As a matter of fact, be sure you pack everything for forest hiking, horse riding, and a casual meal all together! Sunscreen and bug repellent too! Maybe I seem too obvious now?

The value of this experience is there in its variety. Now, that isn’t to say there aren’t cheaper things available that take you to a certain beach and offer some seafood on it, I get it! Still, the combo is very strong, offering the calm nature of the forest, the adventure of horse riding, the relaxation of beach bumming, and unique dining.
