Windsor Dark Side Walking Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Have you ever stopped, that maybe, when exploring a new town, you’ve thought to peek behind the pretty shop fronts and postcard views, maybe see what slightly unsettling histories are hiding just underneath the surface? Right, well, so, the Windsor Private Dark Side Walking Tour promised just that – an alternative glimpse into the historic town, and I, like your average person, was definitely curious. Very curious! It offered tales of hauntings, strange local stories, and darker moments from Windsor’s past, which seemed like the right amount of unsettling fun. So, naturally, I had to check it out. Here is what the experience was like, what I feel the tour is very good at, and whether or not you ought to spend your money.

What Exactly *Is* the Windsor Dark Side Walking Tour?

Dark Alley Windsor

So, alright, at its heart, this walking tour focuses on Windsor’s spookier stories. A bit different, compared to the usual tours centered on Windsor Castle and the Royal Family, it walks through the shadows, quite literally sometimes. In that case, expect ghost stories, accounts of strange occurrences, and possibly accounts of local folklore that most tourists tend to, usually, miss. It tends to be more about unsettling things. Typically, tours are kept intentionally intimate; small groups led by local guides, is that the goal anyway, promising a personal, a bit more immersive, experience. It’s a theatrical performance, history class, and eerie stroll all wrapped into one a bit. A really nice tour guide could definitely make all the difference. As a matter of fact, you will literally be spending about two hours with this individual! Choose well.

Booking and Meeting Your Guide

Anyway, booking the tour was straightforward. So, too, it’s almost as easy as clicking a button. The website is pretty simple to use, or at least it appears to be, and there were a few available time slots. After booking, that confirmation email was sent fairly fast, plus it included meeting point information. On the night, which I ought to say was appropriately gloomy (which almost added to the atmosphere), I found the meeting spot close to the castle without too much difficulty. Actually, it turns out I had arrived a bit early. As a matter of fact, I noticed other people milling around, plus the tour guide was easy to spot. Clearly he had an interesting lantern. He was, arguably, dressed in something slightly reminiscent of a Victorian-era undertaker (or so it looked to me, anyway). This tour guide immediately introduced himself and really did try his hardest to create a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere. A really important quality in that role. This instantly gave me very positive hopes for what lay ahead.

Wandering Through the Shadows: What You’ll Experience

Medieval Windsor Street

So, the tour followed a route around some of the older, more tucked-away areas in Windsor. It’s almost as though the guide really had quite a knack for storytelling, as I remember hanging on every word, really. You could tell he loved doing that job. In some respects, he painted a clear picture of Windsor’s darker side through each chilling tale. There were stories of royal scandals, that somehow felt rather sinister. Some local superstitions, too, of course, and reports of paranormal activity. Each location had its own dedicated ghost stories and anecdotes, apparently. This made what you’d call for a seriously engaging experience. Obviously, some tales felt a bit ’embellished’ maybe for dramatic effect, yet that really is par for the course with these things. Anyway, as a matter of fact, the added theatricality kept it fun, instead of drifting into something scary and unbelievable. The best part, honestly, was standing in the shadows near Windsor Castle, as I listened to accounts of ghostly apparitions from centuries ago. Pretty interesting if that kind of thing tends to grab your attention. That being said, it really does hinge on you getting someone that you genuinely, that seriously, think you’re going to enjoy talking to!

What Makes This Tour Different?

Windsor Castle Secrets

This walking tour differs in several ways from other historical excursions around Windsor, pretty much. Instead of, mostly, being a dry recitation of historical events and royal family gossip, you get something a bit deeper and darker. Maybe, could be, depending on your point of view. Typically, a great focus is given on the slightly lesser-known elements of Windsor’s history. Also, apparently, there’s accounts of ghostly phenomena which make for an alternative, a more spine-chilling, tourism offering. Actually, it can be quite refreshing in a town mostly saturated with “Royal This” and “Royal That”, as they really can all blend together. Another slightly surprising factor might be that you can tell that you get some interesting local expertise from someone who probably lives in the town (or somewhere nearby at least!). It tends to be this personal angle which adds genuine value; sharing stories they had gathered through living locally instead of recycling the same content you could read online, and that kind of thing, pretty much. So too, its small size makes for what is a more intimate experience, almost encouraging audience participation and questions a bit more. Is that something that some find interesting? Maybe!

Is The Windsor Dark Side Walking Tour Worth It?

Windsor Guildhall

At the end of the tour, as a matter of fact, as I headed back towards my accommodation, I actually did mull over whether or not it had been good value. Right, well so, for someone keen on unique tourist experiences that are a bit different from your run-of-the-mill sightseeing tour, and someone with a deep appreciation of things considered scary, that probably is an absolute “yes”. You should definitely go if you find all of that interesting. Now, admittedly, it could come across as a bit niche. Is that alright though? It just provides a quirky, different perspective that history buffs may genuinely love (I know that I probably did!), that are already somewhat acquainted with more of Windsor’s historical landscape. On the other hand, anyone purely after very concrete historical accuracy possibly may be slightly underwhelmed in certain respects by ghost stories being given equal footing with verified events. Arguably this experience might prove best appreciated with an open mind for sure – as a light-hearted yet thought-provoking blend between theatre and factual recitation. Just a little! But it will really rely on if that tour guide grabs your attention. It’s essential that you and that human connect on a level that is satisfying! If this walking tour grabs your attention then you know that you’ll get your money’s worth for certain.

The Highs and Lows

Windsor Royal Mile

So, alright, everything considered, the Windsor Dark Side Walking Tour appears to have its moments where it almost shines as well a couple spots where you might be hoping that there would be some improvement. Now, in terms of upsides, apparently, the storytelling element cannot possibly be understated; is that because most guides come across as engaging as you’d expect? So, actually, you do not feel boring throughout your tour. Very welcome, almost. That might just mean the guide can take what is what you consider ‘dull facts’, maybe. He or she turns that into interesting listening and historical contexts really. On the other hand, now I want to tell you a couple of the downsides. The biggest criticism has something to do with if a person on the tour ends up feeling quite engaged by anything spooky and strange like the rest of their group. Now, possibly, they may begin to feel rather detached quite fast if this tour’s concepts prove irrelevant according to their feelings! I do not know!

Who Would Enjoy This Tour the Most?

Victorian Era Windsor

You are someone that really ought to give that Dark Side Walking Tour go if I felt you were very interested or somewhat captivated by old stories of days gone past (especially what occurred near Windsor), clearly. Now that really also includes anybody else with even something small of an affinity, in a way, when it comes to spooky subjects. Okay then. Did any strange occurrences make Windsor such haunted town after the old Victorian era, really. Those very types are that tend greatly love something so wonderfully unique. You probably would appreciate learning something outside more typical accounts revolving just Windsor’s royal roots instead? Oh man! What kind of tourists could skip? A lot, basically, now, any parties or groups just seeking strictly fact/history (sans spooks!) really could leave less satisfied since the experiences seem largely skewed a lot instead. It tends best going ahead of things and figuring all interests within group so what all enjoy outing fully regardless final selections. Good luck with choosing!
