Victoria Falls Special: A Zimbabwean Resident’s Review

Victoria Falls, or ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ (“The Smoke that Thunders”) as it’s known locally, it’s almost a place that lives in the heart of every Zimbabwean. We all know about its grandeur and breathtaking views, yet not everyone has really had the chance to properly soak in its splendor. Living here sometimes makes you kinda take it for granted, that being so, a recent opportunity came up for me to experience the Falls again, this time with the Zimbabwean Resident Special, and honestly, it was something I’d thought to put down in writing about. Very possibly it can help other locals get out there and see what’s right on their doorstep too. I want to chat about some tips, tricks and what this offer gives you, I think you could say.

Unlocking the Zimbabwean Resident Special

Zimbabwean Currency

So, the Zimbabwean Resident Special it’s almost a promotion run by a lot of tour operators, hotels, and activity providers in Victoria Falls aimed at, well, us Zimbabwean residents. Typically, that usually gives pretty big discounts on entry fees, accommodation, and tours. The whole idea is to encourage local tourism, making it easier and cheaper for us to explore what we already have on our doorstep. I’ve noticed a lot of folks just aren’t even aware these offers are available. Keep your eyes peeled on tourism websites or ask straight away if you’re a Zimbo to save some money. Remember to carry your ID for validation, in that case.

My Falls Experience: A Local’s Perspective

Victoria Falls Guide

Visiting the Falls again after a good few years, it’s almost as if you get that sensation of being an eager tourist even on home soil, too it’s just something else. I chose a weekday hoping it’d be a bit less crowded, which it definitely was, in some respects. Armed with my trusty camera and a sense of anticipation, I was actually paying the entry fee using the resident rate, and I went right through. First thing that struck me, actually, it’s almost how well-maintained the paths are; they made it easy enough to navigate even to the viewpoints closer to the Falls themselves, basically. The views, of course, they’re truly astounding. The sheer force of water plummeting down is something you feel in your bones, that it is. The spray rises high into the air, creating mini rainbows, that is. I took a leisurely walk along the trails, stopping at each viewpoint, snapping tons of photos. Each spot gave you a vantage point different than any other. You end up experiencing, that, it’s like the Falls constantly morphs, and puts on a different show.

Activities with a Discount: What’s Worth Doing?

White Water Rafting Victoria Falls

The Resident Special, that gives more than just discounted entry into the park itself, that you have. Many adventure activities offer substantial savings, actually, and there is quite the offering available to choose from, too. Here’s what I was trying to choose between:

  • The Flight of Angels: A scenic helicopter tour over the Falls. Yes, you see them from above, that, it’s an aerial perspective like no other. The prices seem like a lot at first. Check the resident rates, though, in that case!
  • White Water Rafting on the Zambezi: I am talking some serious adrenaline. The rapids below the Falls are apparently pretty legendary. Several operators give discounts if you are Zimbabwean. This one I’d check beforehand, very possibly just based on the fact you want an operator with high standards, which is why I was leaning toward not focusing on getting just the best deal on cost.
  • Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi: For something a little more relaxing, it’s the classic sunset cruise which might be right. Picture sipping on a drink as you watch the sun dip below the horizon, with the sounds of the African bush all around, in that case. Again, many companies offer lower rates for locals, that, it’s an option to have.
  • Guided Walking Tours: Maybe explore the rainforest near the Falls. Or perhaps that’s just learning about the history, geology, and local legends surrounding Mosi-oa-Tunya? Many tour companies do walking tours and will most likely drop the price to accommodate your local residence status, basically.

I picked the sunset cruise actually. It seemed, in some respects, like the thing that you almost must do when you visit the Falls, very possibly if that’s even for the first time. And, that’s probably the biggest endorsement, isn’t it? I’d certainly rate it! It’s not always about rushing into action; having a relaxed moment out in nature felt so good to do and I appreciated it.

Accommodation: Where to Stay Local

Victoria Falls Hotel

Victoria Falls, that offers a whole bunch of choices for lodging, from fancy hotels to pretty budget-friendly lodges, is that not right? Don’t assume, maybe, that you can’t afford some of the nicer spots; often they actually have deals specifically for Zimbabwean residents, in that case. So many options available:

  • The Victoria Falls Hotel: A place oozing in colonial grandeur and with incredible views of the bridge. Ask them straight away about the resident specials, actually, as it is still quite an expense even with those taken into account. But, that’s for those that really need some pampering.
  • Batonka Guest Lodge: This is where I was, that’s close enough to town. Comfortable and not costing so much, it tends to be what I’d be more likely to choose for a longer visit.
  • Shearwater Explorers Village: A pretty decent choice for backpackers or anyone who prefers self-catering. Also, its central location means it’s pretty good, but it seems that there might be a more “vibrant” crowd for those that love social interaction more!

Remember to book well in advance, particularly, maybe, if you are traveling during peak season (which is like, dry season) is what you should remember to do. Don’t get caught out assuming it’s never busy.

Tips for Maximizing Your Visit

Tips for travel

A visit to Victoria Falls is memorable regardless, that, that has got to be right, but with a bit of planning, it really can turn out to be even more special. Let me tell you a few pointers I’ve picked up:

  • Best Time to Visit: This kinda depends on what you’re after, I think. Peak flow is February to May, and the Falls is at its most impressive, that is. Be warned, too it gets soaked from the spray! August to December, it’s almost like the water levels are lower, which makes the white-water rafting that touch safer.
  • What to Pack: Lightweight, breathable clothing, comfy shoes (you’ll be doing plenty of walking), sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and a waterproof jacket or poncho. A dry bag for your electronics may turn out to be handy too, to say the least.
  • Safety First: Pay attention to all warning signs and stick to designated paths, just common sense is helpful. Be careful of slippery surfaces, basically. Keep a safe distance from the edge of the cliffs and maybe heed advice.
  • Money Matters: Some places do accept USD. But you still will be far better off if you bring some local currency for smaller purchases and tips is often preferable, too. Card machines are not everywhere you go, sadly.
  • Respect the Environment: That should be pretty basic. Leave no trace, stick to marked trails, and don’t disturb the wildlife that might show up to say hello.

Getting that experience locked in so you have something amazing and personal to take home from your memories makes it so special. So even little tips that you knew about or get passed on, just put more value on the trip.
