Van Winkle Barrowlands Bourbon & Plates: An In-depth Review

Have you ever wanted a space to truly savor some smooth bourbon, while perhaps enjoying food created to complement the beverage? Very, very few things go together quite like great flavors, you know? Van Winkle Barrowlands, a spot found near the legendary Glasgow music venue, promises just such an experience. I wanted to see if the reality lives up to the hype surrounding its bourbon tastings with shared plates. So I dropped by recently to form an impression.

First Impressions: Atmosphere and Ambiance

restaurant ambiance

The location is pretty cool because the restaurant’s name clearly connects to the local area! Walking into Van Winkle Barrowlands, it almost immediately becomes clear that this place is not only just about drinks but a cool setting for conversation too, I feel. The decor gives you these nods to old-school Americana alongside an edgy, modern twist; like it has leather seating mixed with exposed brickwork, so it has warmth without being too stuffy. The volume is loud enough so it sounds buzzing yet quiet enough you can chat to whoever you came with! It could be good for friends wanting an informal catch-up or maybe a date?

The Bourbon Tasting Experience

bourbon tasting flight

Clearly, the star of the show here truly is the bourbon, right? Van Winkle Barrowlands boasts an impressive selection, that I saw at least. Whether you’re already a bourbon fan or, instead, new to it, they have something for everyone. I went for one of their tasting flights because, you know, I felt like it gave me a little bit of everything, it’s almost like an intro class! Each pour was very nicely explained by the staff; because they took you through all the flavors, like the different notes, that could be anything, right; spices or oaky flavors! It helped me really savor what I was sampling. Prices could be high depending on what you decide to taste, just so you know!

Shared Plates: Complementing the Bourbon

food sharing platter

I do believe you need food when trying drinks so, for me, it really made sense that they give you sharing plates, so you could sample all the foods too. The menu is filled with foods created to bring out and match the flavors in bourbon. Expect things, possibly, such as slow-cooked meats, yummy cheeses, and also maybe some pickles to cut through some of the stronger flavors! Meats tasted delicious so I ate pretty much all of it, but it might be a little meat heavy?

Service and Staff: Enhancing the Visit

friendly staff

The team who work here know everything. I found them really knowledgeable, happy to answer all your questions and offering useful suggestions too. This, as a matter of fact, adds an extra layer to your tasting. When they came by and asked how things tasted it didn’t feel like they were pretending, just you know? It felt very organic!

Value for Money

value for money

Is Van Winkle Barrowlands a worthwhile splurge, right? Depending on your choices, it probably won’t be the most affordable night out. Having said that, the standard of bourbon and food, along with that fantastic environment, make it an adventure instead of only a meal, right? Just so you know, perhaps save it for a special event… or maybe even a fancy Friday night!

Overall Verdict: Should You Go?

positive review

Van Winkle Barrowlands is a very cool space for someone wanting some top-tier bourbon with amazing food to share. Perhaps the prices might discourage regular visits. When it comes to the whole vibe plus that quality it balances it. Anyone wanting a great time with good food should visit.
