Urubamba ATV Tour Review: Moray & Maras Salt Pans

The Sacred Valley in Peru? Very much more than just a stopover before Machu Picchu. Sure, plenty of people see it that way, but I tell you what, there’s a bunch of incredible things to do there. Like your, I was keen to dig deeper than the usual tourist spots, that is, I was very eager to discover some adventure that’d truly let me soak it all in. And wouldn’t you know it, the ATV tour from Urubamba, heading up to Moray and the Maras Salt Pans, happened to be just what I needed. A bumpy, thrilling, kinda dusty whatchamacallit through places steeped in history and mind-blowing landscapes? Pretty hard to beat, if I do say so myself.

Gearing Up in Urubamba: Preparing for the Ride

ATV tour preparation in Urubamba

Urubamba’s where your ATV escapade usually starts. This area is usually where tour companies set up shop. My tour guides, bunch of super easygoing and, really, experienced locals, very clearly gave us a walkthrough on operating the ATVs and what safety measures to keep in mind. A little practice area, basically near their HQ, let us kinda get a feel for these machines, that is to say, it was a small patch where people tried driving and navigating turns before heading onto tougher terrains. They very also gave us helmets, goggles, even bandanas because the trails? Apparently super dusty. Trust me on this one: those bandanas are lifesavers.

So, the initial feel? Little nerve-wracking! You know, never driven an ATV before that very day. Turns out, the machines are simple to handle, it’s almost as simple as riding a bicycle once you get going, anyway, so the anxiety went away quick. With that prepped and, you know, raring to go, we hit the road, a group of, like your ten or so adventurers chasing something you can describe as the freedom and breathtaking views that very only the Peruvian highlands could deliver.

Moray’s Mysterious Terraces: An Agricultural Marvel

The ride up to Moray is a rollercoaster, so a bunch of dirt paths snaking all through the countryside and giving you glances of those crazy mountain views that you often only dream about. The ATVs handled, actually, the uneven terrain really well, making the climb pretty exciting, that is to say, not for a moment did I felt like I wasn’t in control. Moray came out of nowhere; those mind-blowing circular terraces look really, really unreal. What makes them quite special is very their history, basically going all the way back to the Incas, which many theorize used the site as an experimental farm.

Those varying levels of terraces made a gradient of microclimates. It’s easy to tell if you walk around there. These differences are seemingly utilized by the Incas to find out how specific crops fared under these very, very diverse conditions. You get that idea they were ahead of their time in a number of regards looking down into these dizzying, man-made wonders? I just did, personally I felt humbled, almost like your whispering respect as I walked along the rim. That moment? Something, almost, you won’t ever forget.

Maras Salt Mines: A Shimmering Tapestry

Maras Salt Mines view

From Moray, the ATV tour went up and, really, onward to the Maras Salt Pans, pretty easily one of the neatest places I’ve, actually, ever seen. Imagine this, like your thousands of small pools cut into a mountain side, reflecting sunlight in the most incredible way that will probably, if it sees the light, be forever etched in your memory. These salt pans have a history that might very easily be traced to, perhaps, way before the Incas, and they’re still being used to get salt by people nearby.

It’s so fascinating seeing, like your the locals working in the very same manner they have for centuries. A short talk? You probably should take the time and strike a brief conversation, these miners tell wonderful anecdotes about their customary ways. Not only will you be getting to buy a few packs of naturally harvested salt. They can, potentially, even open your perspective with unique views on heritage and human persistence, I think anyway. The views from the high spots are gorgeous, ideal spots to take memorable photographs.

The Thrill of the Ride: ATV Adventure through the Sacred Valley

ATV riding through the Sacred Valley

Ok, a bit of honesty, you guys. The spots we explored? Super amazing. What really made this tour, this? That adrenaline-inducing fun while ripping across the trails. Picture going up and down steep slopes. Then imagine powering past some deep ruts while that landscape goes rushing by; then maybe think about stopping, from time to time, just so you can catch glimpses of those jaw-dropping panoramas. This kind of adventure’s all that, it also gets you off the main tourist tracks.

Is that something to keep in mind for some readers who may worry a bit too much? Be comfortable; the guides maintain you can drive at your comfortable speed. Plus, so there is little sense of being pushed onward to the point that enjoyment ceases. Their proficiency? To such degree they adapt quickly to your capabilities. With their advice? The tougher portions are simple to, you know, overcome with careful maneuverings, it’s almost as if, just the guidance can lead even newbies such as I on, towards that successful finish. This tour offers a brilliant mixture of history, some stunning beauty, it, too, packs that excitement. I, anyway, think it’s a brilliant addition when you go to visit Peru.

What to Bring and How to Prepare

traveler preparing for ATV tour

Few ideas on what should go into making your ATV trip go smoothly, yeah? Most people seem to think it’s almost just showing up, like I also was thinking, but there are some things, as always. Remember wearing layered garments because of how wildly conditions vary. When riding across valleys the sun can get a bit intense, thus do apply sunscreen of higher grade. Bring camera equipment with safe carriers and maybe have some backup storage just if a chance opportunity to capture endless pictures arise.

Hydration gets crucial at increased elevations, it’s almost always true. Thus stock, or refill along breaks a hydration reservoir to ensure adequate consumption, for thirst never has the time to come about if you tend to supply constantly with water intake. Regarding shoes, it will do well to bring those solid shoes, preferably, if they give full coverage along ankle and maybe permit decent support given the roughness from bumpy routes. Mostly? By just being wise to your comfort alongside keeping safe with these components should make everything an incredible exploration, anyway.
