It really does, in a way, give you a feeling, sort of, of what the soldiers stationed here must have thought. But back then, very few would have seen it as, say, a beautiful landscape.

After my little workout on the steps, St. Michael’s Cave seemed pretty much unreal, it seems. To start, the views you will come across on your walk there are amazing. The cave itself? So, it is like stepping into a cathedral, kind of. It really is. You see these huge stalactites and stalagmites, and the way they light it all up, in some respects, adds this dramatic feel, just like you might experience in any house of worship. In its past, I believe the cave served as a shelter, and I feel they have regular events there today. It is super easy, it seems, to spend quite a bit of time in there. I just walked around slowly, taking it all in. One tip, actually? Watch out for tours that might get too crowded, just a bit. That said, a bit of patience? I think it pays off, clearly.

The Apes’ Den: Meeting the Famous Barbary Macaques

Right, I can not go without chatting about the Barbary Macaques! Gibraltar, probably, is super well-known for them, and you can typically find many just hanging about at the Apes’ Den. It’s rather amusing, actually, watching them, just doing what they do. You do, you know, need to keep your stuff very, very safe, though, it seems! These monkeys? They are very good at grabbing things, literally, and I think you could quite easily lose anything if you aren’t that careful! As a matter of fact, the guides will warn you. Do listen! You also might choose to just enjoy watching these creatures instead of attempting, say, a selfie. Respecting their space means, too, that they are safer and more comfortable.

The Great Siege Tunnels: A Glimpse into History

A real change from the apes, now, the Great Siege Tunnels, I feel, offered something so different from anything I’d experienced! Cutting into the rock back in the late 1700s? Basically, that was a remarkable feat, honestly. As I walked through, I just got this very powerful sense, honestly, of what life was like for soldiers during sieges. The tunnels provided this really incredible view out to the Bay of Gibraltar. Seeing how those gun emplacements were set up? Very thought-provoking, so I thought. Make sure, you know, that you wear sensible shoes, pretty much. And too it’s almost worth taking a light jacket, really, as inside the tunnels, basically, the temperature can, actually, drop down.
