Udaipur Tour Review: A Whirlwind 2 Days with Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur

Okay, so Udaipur. It’s often called the “City of Lakes,” and right away, that description kind of sets the scene. It’s very charming, alright? Now, I just got back from a lightning-quick, two-day private tour that squeezed in not only Udaipur, that’s very exciting, but also Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Ranakpur Jain Temple. Was it a relaxed, slow-paced meander? Nope! But if you’re very short on time and eager to soak up some Rajasthan history and splendor, this trip could be just the ticket, that’s for sure.

First Impressions: Udaipur, Very Pretty

Udaipur City Palace

From the get-go, Udaipur grabs you. The City Palace, perched right on the edge of Lake Pichola, is almost something out of a fairy tale. It is a colossal complex and frankly, it’s easy to get a little turned around within it, with very intricate courtyards, museums overflowing with royal trinkets, and the most amazing views. Our guide, thankfully, was seriously good. Very informed, really. He managed to shepherd us around, dropping in a few stories about the Maharanas and the palace intrigue without very overwhelming us. The Jagdish Temple, it’s also a place we squeezed in on that first afternoon. Is that seriously stunning? The architecture is so ornate; that it took my breath away for a minute, you see?

A boat trip on Lake Pichola during sunset is very often mentioned, and trust me, it is a must. As the sun starts to sink and that sky puts on its dazzling show, the City Palace and the Lake Palace (that’s a very fancy hotel) begin to glow. It is almost magical; it very nearly brought a tear to my eye. I’d suggest factoring in some time to just soak up the atmosphere at one of the rooftop restaurants – even if it is just for a cup of chai – very wonderful. That quiet moment is the time you seriously start to appreciate Udaipur’s charm, or you will, right?

Kumbhalgarh Fort: A Seriously Imposing Guardian

Kumbhalgarh Fort

The next morning it was up before dawn, which alright, stung a bit, but Kumbhalgarh Fort isn’t exactly around the corner from Udaipur, or anything. The drive itself is a long one, or so I felt, but that landscape, as we climbed into the Aravalli Hills, began to change. It is more and more dramatic by the minute, very stark and breathtaking. You start getting a real feel for Rajasthan’s rugged beauty, which I feel like, that you rarely hear about, alright?

Kumbhalgarh. This place is impressive; alright? It’s supposed to have the second-longest wall in the complete world after the Great Wall of China! That’s hard to completely get your head around, but the sheer scale of the fortress is impressive, almost humbling, even. It very overlooks miles and miles of hills and forests. Our guide filled us in on Rana Kumbha (the ruler who built it) and the many attempts to take the fort. Seriously gripping things when he gets going, it really makes you appreciate the strategic significance of the location, right?

Now, the climb to the top isn’t exactly a stroll in the park, or so you might think, but oh, the views! It feels very satisfying to gaze out from that high vantage point, almost feeling like you are guarding the Aravalli Hills yourself. Make very sure you’re very wearing suitable shoes and also very be prepared to walk up some pretty steep inclines. But seriously, honestly the panoramic views? Very, very worth it.

Ranakpur Jain Temple: A Visual Masterpiece, Honestly

Ranakpur Jain Temple

From Kumbhalgarh, it’s on to Ranakpur, very another architectural jewel, and I mean it. The Jain Temple, dedicated to Lord Adinatha, is seriously famous for its 1,444 uniquely carved pillars. It is very impressive when you actually see it.

Okay, so, it isn’t an exaggeration, not at all; honestly every pillar is individual. The detailing is quite stunning. The whole structure is marble, or so it looks, and that light filtering through those complex carvings is actually pretty gorgeous. Even if you’re not extremely into architecture (I usually tend to be, honestly!), you can very still appreciate the skill and that devotion that went into creating this place. I’d very advise very taking your time to walk around it. Absorb that atmosphere and listen to your guide explain the beliefs and that symbolism that are woven into those carvings, that’s amazing.

Things to Know Before You Go: Useful Tidbits

Rajasthan culture

Private Tour Perks: Doing the tour privately honestly meant we could change things a little, you see? We spent slightly longer at Kumbhalgarh because honestly, that history really fascinated us, that it really did. Having that flexibility is a significant plus, right? Also, honestly the driver and guide? They know that area inside and out, so that you’re getting all those local insights, right?

Early Starts: Rajasthan is extremely hot, especially during summer. Starting out that day nice and early helps you dodge some of that heat. Plus, seeing those sunrise views are definitely worth sacrificing a few hours of sleep, right? It really, really is.

Dress Code: For all temples, very shoulders and knees should be covered. Honestly, it is a sign of respect, that it really is, and some places are quite strict regarding that. So, bearing that in mind, be thoughtful in that department. Take a light scarf, alright? It is a really useful option and can act as a dust shield. Seriously!

Guides: honestly having a very knowledgable guide made that whole experience about a hundred times better. Be sure to ask them some really thoughtful questions and hear some really interesting insights.

Food: The trip allows a chance to experience that Rajasthani food. Is it just me, or does that always makes the adventure richer, right? Make certain you stay very hydrated, it very helps you manage that heat, alright?
