Tirana, Shkoder, Kruja & Sari Salltik: Your Guide to Northern Albania

Tirana Albania

If you are figuring out just where to go in Albania, think about taking a peek at the north! You might have already heard about Albania’s capital, Tirana, but, too, there’s quite a bit more to check out such as Shkoder, the town of Kruja and even the mountain pilgrimage location Sari Salltik. Each spot is totally unique and brimming with history, views, and some super photo-friendly spots. I figured I would, that, chat a bit about what you might expect when you hit these places, and I’m hoping that it’ll spark some ideas for a trip, you know?

Tirana: Albania’s Capital City

Skanderbeg Square Tirana

Tirana, that’s often the first place you find yourself since the main airport’s close. At first glance, very Tirana might come off just a little, you know, busy. The city is moving fast, alright? But don’t let that put you off because, first off, it actually packs a lot. Skanderbeg Square is basically where most things happen and where you’ll see all these grand buildings, alright? There’s the National Historical Museum with like, that, this crazy mosaic on the facade. And it’s a super, like, short walk over to the Et’hem Bey Mosque, plus the Clock Tower too; could be some spots worth getting pics of.

Speaking of, though, a very different time in Albania’s history, consider House of Leaves and Bunk’Art 2. These two kinda heavy-hitting museums are really almost a must see, as a matter of fact, if you would like to gain some insight into Albania’s communist history. The House of Leaves, so, is, like, this former surveillance center and Bunk’Art 2? That’s, like, an actual bunker that has all these exhibits about political persecution.

One more thing: New Bazaar. I’d be sure, too, you pop over here if you are in the mood for maybe getting a few snacks or seeing just a little bit of local hustle. Also, the architecture around this area could be kinda interesting too. Now, when dusk hits, that’s where the whole vibe changes because Tirana gets more chill, as a matter of fact. Plenty of cafe places plus bars where you might wanna sit outside, that, sip just a little something while people-watching.

Shkoder: A Blend of History and Lakeside Charm

Shkoder Albania

Moving up north, pretty, so you find Shkoder, which ends up sitting not far from the largest lake in Southern Europe (that would be Lake Shkoder, obviously!) is pretty cool because, that, it manages to mash together historical sites with quite pretty waterfront stuff. One place? Rozafa Fortress. The climb up there may, maybe, give you a bit of a workout but it offers views, which, too, are worth your breaths because you can peep the entire city as well as the lake off on one side. Apparently, stories about Rozafa also end up being steeped into, just a little, Albanian lore, so listen up for it.

Also worth doing? You might want to go walk around the city center and then, very, explore the Saint Stephen’s Cathedral plus the Ebu Bekr Mosque because you can get a sense, I think, just how people from different cultures have ended up mixing it up a bit around Albania through the years. For anyone, so, digging nature, it could be, anyway, awesome too; rent a boat for the day and check around Lake Shkoder, especially since you could just spot some of, kind of, its neat bird life. Plus it is peaceful, which could be exactly what a doctor might tell ya!

Kruja: The Heart of Albanian Resistance

Kruja Albania

Just a tad north of Tirana you could locate Kruja; it’s probably one of, basically, Albania’s biggest spots when, kind of, you start going into history, alright? That would have, kind of, to do with Skanderbeg having used this as a stronghold, by the way, to ward off, really, the Ottomans in like the 15th century. I’m saying, right?, you will probably wanna peep Kruja Castle yourself, alright? that is, well, cool when, I mean, considering that just you might think about how he controlled those lands!

It seems like almost everything comes from right in there, too, including The Skanderbeg Museum. Once, it, gets done getting that out of your system; don’t not skip The Old Bazaar though, alright? Plenty, so, could go scoop up several different knickknacks along the sidewalks but think about watching some skilled craft makers doing some pretty interesting work. As you are out and, like, around there I guess you would probably, just a little bit, hear tales, and who knows; you can learn just a little, maybe, concerning what defines pride of Albania today.

Sari Salltik: A Spiritual Mountain Retreat

Sari Salltik Albania

Speaking from where to go, like, very left of all-the-other-stuff; peep out Sari Salltik. This becomes probably a spot where many Bektashi Muslims kinda like to make what turns out to be pilgrimages up high inside those hills. What happens, so, could give a few super vantage points yet that needs something close to 2-ish miles or that so which goes mostly kinda uphill to be that specific. If it doesn’t become some challenge from up there then its scenery starts changing the feel because you almost seem like getting nearer so toward heavens while its landscape opens for probably seeing panoramas across. Apparently Sari Salltik blends what actually shows up out from landscape while almost weaving through several very faith-type views.

Helpful hints toward hitting Albania (Northern-region)

  • Driving vs. Public Transport: Driving becomes OK getting, by the way, that around, but, too, prepare probably due what shows to some rather curved lanes or, that, a small chaos. Maybe that route has public options from going so without headaches although always expect how schedules would probably be somewhat unpredictable.
  • Local Currency: Here seems just as if using leke (ALL) so while out buying almost somewhere across markets besides being, too, inside a tourist’s hotpoint where euros may seem kind towards showing its charm at getting paid. Get all several needed amounts outta machines, just right there across some town center getting without running across those higher fee payments through random businesses .
  • Language Basics: Being around English comes mostly at those, that, places having what could tell almost all by seeing tourists but picking one, then something, hello like “pershendetje”. Even what seems polite counts more even if words aren’t mostly very mastered too close.
  • Respectful Clothing: Getting from places seeming kinda, just very closely knit as in villages and some faith oriented sites, maybe getting all that modesty around dressy bits that just tends telling tons, like showing good will around several surroundings.
