Tbilisi, Gudauri, and Kazbegi: My Unfiltered Private Day Trip Account

Tbilisi Gudauri Kazbegi

Okay, so you are thinking about seeing some amazing sights away from Tbilisi? A day tour that takes you up into the mountains to Gudauri and Kazbegi could just be what you need. After going on what’s sold as a ‘Private Day Trip,’ I felt I just needed to pass along my experience – both the parts that wowed me and the stuff that, perhaps, didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s always nice when you hear what something is really like from a person, or so it appears, and that’s what I am aiming to deliver for you today.

Booking the Trip: Promises and Price Tags

Georgia Mountains

First things first, the signup. Lots of different companies are selling very similar trips, too it’s almost difficult to tell the difference, right? Most of them showcase gorgeous landscapes, mention a private experience, and of course, show those pretty, snow-capped mountains. That said, what usually grabs you first, and basically the most important element, is the price. Be prepared that the cost really can change, maybe even based on the type of ride you want, or the level of guide that seems nice to have around. Anyhow, for me, after having a look around, I settled on a mid-range offer – not the most inexpensive, but certainly not what one might call the most expensive, either. This one, ostensibly, assured me of a personal, unforgettable adventure.

The Ride: A Driver, or a Guide?

Georgian Roads

What shapes the bulk of any day trip, I am quite sure, is actually the drive itself. And what stood out from this very outset? Instead of a guide providing history and filling me in on a lot of stories, I was assigned, or so it felt to me at least, a driver. To be very honest, the man seemed very kind and did what I wanted. However, small talk really wasn’t his cup of tea. He skillfully managed the winding roads, which is definitely something you’d very much prefer they do! But a deep discussion? That wasn’t on the menu. That isn’t a problem so much, arguably, depending on what one really expects, but it just shifted the entire atmosphere of the adventure for me, anyway.

Gudauri: A Ski Resort That Charms (Even Off-Season)

Gudauri Ski Resort

Gudauri came up first on the route, yet it is apparently famed as a prime spot for skiing. During my visit, there wasn’t any snow – still, its attraction stood out in other ways. The views from the “Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument” – though its background has become a little complicated these days – honestly is pretty stunning. Looking across those mountain views was amazing, that said, even absent those snow drifts. Then there is the paragliding; very enticing indeed! I, however, passed up that offer. But really, it’s an ideal spot to pause and, naturally, breathe that incredibly clean mountain air.

Kazbegi: The Showstopper

Kazbegi Georgia

Next comes Kazbegi – what everyone agrees is the highlight for most folks on trips just like these. And trust me, for really good cause! The drive itself passes via some delightful, really small settlements and over terrain that gives one some amazing sights. However, what is very different is the Gergeti Trinity Church. This thing sits majestically right on a hill with Mount Kazbek looming tall nearby. The church feels so solitary and kind of ancient. You go there by 4×4 (arranged by the tour). That last climb just contributes even more charm. This place, undoubtedly, really does live up to everything you hear regarding its beauty.

Food Stops: Plan Ahead A Bit

Georgian Cuisine

Here is something that surprised me just a tad: Food really wasn’t organized by the tour, nor are there usually options provided, and stuff like that. My driver gave me tips about some decent eating spots, but it would be in your interest to conduct your own research prior, perhaps. I tasted a tasty meal in Pasanauri. This location is rightly known as the birthplace of tasty khinkali (Georgian dumplings). Actually, having a local feast like this makes the adventure so more fulfilling.

What Really Makes the Tour Special

For what it’s worth, what genuinely can lift any tour above another, is the extra experiences. My tour, to be very honest, just seemed kind of…basic. No one presented historical context when driving past old sites. I feel like no quirky, interesting locations were introduced. It simply, virtually, was travel from A to B, and that was all. Assuming that tour operators inject personal tales or interesting detours, this would seriously increase the thrill element in a very major way, too it’s almost guaranteed.

Things I Liked and Disliked

Let’s see…What stood out? Gudauri’s views and, certainly, Kazbegi’s church are memorable. That is all, of course. Furthermore, that a personal car really gave me some comfort. What would I transform? A more communicative guide, truly. This addition might convert only an alright journey into one that leaves a lasting impact, it’s pretty obvious.

So, Would I Suggest This Tour?

Alright, to the big thing, actually. This “Private Day Trip” presents you a chance for seeing the highlights near Tbilisi rather readily, sure. But I’d advocate doing some digging around and try for an operation that actually guarantees much more than transportation. Search for a company which provides well-read guides. This means they can share context. They also might make it extra fascinating, and that certainly seems more valuable for your money, more or less.
