Tambopata Jungle Getaway: A Look Back at the 2-Day Adventure

Okay, so you’re thinking of getting away to the Amazon? Perhaps to Tambopata for a couple of days? That is, looking at doing a little jungle excursion? Very well then! I’m thinking I can probably provide what amounts to an in-depth review of my trip. One that hopefully prepares you. And readies you. For this experience.

Touching Down and Getting Oriented: First Impressions

First things first, getting there! My adventure began with a flight to Puerto Maldonado, so, the gateway to the southern Amazon in Peru. The airport itself is just a very manageable size, I think. Meaning it is nothing like some of those gigantic terminals, too! And soon enough, a representative from the tour operator, you know, the people handling my Tambopata adventure, met me, very conveniently holding a sign with my name, I thought. It was almost a pretty quick transfer to the office in town for a quick briefing. Maybe also, some last-minute preparations! That sort of thing, too. The staff were pretty friendly, so very helpful, too. They went over the itinerary, answering every single question I had. Really going into as much detail as possible. Then it was time. Time to head on towards the jungle!

Setting Off Down the River: The Boat Ride

Next up was the boat ride! That is, getting from Puerto Maldonado. Towards our lodge in the jungle! We headed down the Tambopata River, you know, in a motorized canoe. In a way, it was pretty serene gliding through the water. It was almost like leaving civilization behind, really, to be honest. The riverbanks passed. That is, little by little transforming. I could almost see the forest getting thicker, really. And that is, wildlife began to appear a bit more, you might say. Like your occasional bird soaring overhead, probably. The guide pointed out several things, too. Including some birdlife and a few caiman sunning themselves. That’s how the guide brought the surrounding jungle alive.

Checking In and Settling Down: Arrival at the Eco-Lodge

After a pretty scenic boat ride, maybe close to three hours in total, it was arrival time at the eco-lodge! It was such a pretty welcome sight after the ride, really. My lodge was rather rustic, you know, but very comfortable, too! The rooms, anyway, had mosquito nets. You do have to have one to prevent potential bug bites. You see, I saw very simple amenities. They all helped provide a safe haven to relax between excursions.

The afternoon had one of the guided walks, you know, deeper into the rainforest. It’s almost an intro to the jungle, arguably, teaching about the various flora. It’s plants basically. And of course, fauna. Like your animals! And insects, too! The guide, anyway, was quite knowledgeable, talking a bit about the importance of the Amazon. Really the conservation efforts there, that’s the key. And how one protects this unique area, too. I got to see things on the trails as well. Like, colorful birds and different insects. That sort of thing, too! So this just heightened that sense of, wow, I’m in the middle of something so incredibly unique!

Nighttime Exploration: Caiman Spotting

Then, so, the night excursion. So one of the highlights! We went out on the river on a boat again, this time to find caimans! And yes, I’m talking about those reptile cousins to crocodiles! The guide had a spotlight to try to catch their glowing eyes near the riverbanks. He’s basically scanning along the shore! This pretty exciting venture turned out to be very, very exciting as we managed to spot a few, a bit! Seeing their eyes gleaming in the light was kind of spine-tingling to be honest.

Sunrise Spectacle: The Macaw Clay Lick

Day two came so quick, anyway starting before dawn! Early, but the goal of heading to the macaw clay lick, a thing! This one place on the riverbank that all the macaws descend upon to eat clay, too! Meant, yeah, very worthwhile to make the attempt and go! As we approached, even still a bit distant, a few macaws were easy to hear already. The noise really began to fill the air.

Getting closer to the clay lick, that is a natural opening along the river bank, I almost couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing! Very brightly colored macaws. Dozens upon dozens all clinging. Eating at the clay, you see! The noise was basically unbelievable. These are the things you remember from something like that! All these big birds chattering away! This sight and that noise was amazing. Pretty memorable. Pretty awe inspiring to be in. Pretty much something that I’m likely to not ever forget. Or see again in that concentrated fashion. You need good viewing equipment for these far away shots though.

Return to Civilization: Heading Back

Getting close to noon, the return back to Puerto Maldonado was a thing on the schedule. After another pretty good boat ride, but admittedly kind of more melancholy now that the jungle adventure was ending, too, back in town I was dropped off, too it’s almost. And so, from there on out, onwards towards that next leg of travel I had.

Overall Thoughts

My two-day tour of Tambopata did prove to be quite memorable, very educational, too! As an easy escape right into the depths of the Amazon, you know. The experience, well, delivered just the right blend of both adventure, of course. So just a bit of nature appreciation and, very educational moments, too! Very well worth your consideration.

Recommendations and Tips

Thinking about it, I am remembering I have just a few things, now, that are my recommendations, just a bit! If you are looking to enjoy what is possible in Tambopata, too, almost. Be mindful, though, of a few important tips. Basically! Get yourself properly ready. With these small tidbits. Very much!

• Packing: Think what clothing choices work the best, alright. Pack both breathable as well as light clothing items. Pack up that rain gear and good hiking shoes.
• Bring along the DEET: Mosquitos were the reality, that is. Make absolutely certain to bring very high-DEET insect repellent, anyway! And reapply often. It tends to get them away, yeah.
• Your vaccinations: Before getting away to Peru make absolutely sure, too! That all those vaccinations have been handled, yeah? That sort of thing! So look to speak with your physician and see just what that looks like! And make sure that your physician has experience giving vaccinations for trips that you’re thinking of making! Not every physician does! Or knows to. This way it is just far safer than, anyway.
• Respect the environment, alright?: During all of those tours listen carefully. Be ready to pay consideration to exactly how and what it is! That is the tour provider talks a bit about when talking all of the preservation things, yeah. In Tambopata! In total there can be a very limited number of people that come into areas on a day-to-day timeframe. Some people should make every attempt to appreciate all of it around! And not damage or disrupt the plants and any animal’s behavior! Or just damage any location. So remember what that does! Very much!

By thinking of these points that is to say, hopefully anyone and everyone finds! Their trip as likely that! Kind of that more exciting and so enjoyable of an escapade! Very honestly!
