Sun & Moon Island Trip From Copacabana: An Expert Review

Thinking of visiting Sun Island and Moon Island from Copacabana, Bolivia? Maybe you should! Well, this trip is one of those things that sounds awesome in brochures, right? That is that, I mean turquoise water, Inca ruins, plus stunning views? So, it all looks so pretty tempting, yet, let’s take a little look at what you might expect, so you know, you are kind of getting your money’s worth.

Getting to Copacabana, Your Launchpad

Okay, first things first. In order to experience these islands, you actually have to get to Copacabana. I want to tell you, I mean, this town on Lake Titicaca is more or less the starting point for most island expeditions. Often buses from La Paz get you there. The bus ride can be quite the experience as I was saying, and it winds through some fairly dramatic scenery. Expect the journey to take about three to four hours, seemingly, depending on traffic and that is that the bus’s mood. So, the town is charming and full of vendors selling llama sweaters! However, Copacabana itself warrants maybe a day or two of exploration and perhaps some coca tea consumption for the altitude sickness that sometimes kicks in. Seems sensible?

Sun Island: Isla del Sol – The Star Attraction

Okay, here we have Sun Island or Isla del Sol! That is where you’re most likely going to spend a good chunk of your trip. Sun Island, or Isla del Sol in Spanish, basically, feels like stepping back centuries. The island boasts a rich history as many know, as that, it’s believed to be the birthplace of the Inca sun god, Viracocha. When you come by boat from Copacabana as you do, the southern part is where most tours initiate. I think that is correct.

Southern Sun Island: The Tourist Hub

So you arrive in the southern region which often is very busy, just, it seems to serve as the island’s main welcome zone. This area is usually full of other tourists. I’m referring to groups eagerly following guides holding flags on poles as a matter of fact. You’ll get an immediate introduction to Inca terraces so often seen and some vendors trading handicrafts! And yes, just a bit of the relentless sun at this altitude, just bear in mind.

One of the main spots down south is the Inca steps called the Escaleras del Inca. That lead up to a ‘sacred’ fountain. Seems very popular. Those steps do require some stamina because the altitude that you are hiking makes the experience tiring. Oh dear! Some tourists struggle to walk. It is a popular spot. People are taking photos, really. I do want to emphasize that this part of the island can be overcrowded and perhaps over-touristy. You understand?

Northern Sun Island: For the Intrepid Explorer

If you want a break from, I mean the bustle and also maybe see some peace? Head north on the island! Many agree that the north part feels totally isolated. Often you might not even see many other travelers there. That’s usually because the boat tours, anyway, don’t typically include it. And you know that trekking to the north takes at least two to three hours on foot from the south.

I found the northern side worth all the extra walking. Seems correct! The ancient ruins such as the Chincana Labyrinth. And also the Sacred Rock tend to be more authentic in a way. As you get away from, I mean the package tours! That’s very enjoyable. And actually gives you a less curated. I’d like to say that I appreciate this raw, untouched feel! In some respects this place actually brings home the historical essence of the island. Just prepare yourself for the physical demand though as the landscape gets rough and quite steep.

Moon Island: Isla de la Luna – The Mystical Sister

Next is Moon Island. Okay. You can call it Isla de la Luna. Seemingly this feels so different to Sun Island. It does feel more intimate and far quieter. The journey by boat from Sun Island to Moon Island just takes like an hour at most, just as well.

The Temple of the Virgins: Iñak Uyu

The primary, I mean attraction here has to be the Iñak Uyu, yes? That is that it’s commonly called the Temple of the Virgins. Oh boy, that sounds a bit suggestive doesn’t it. Okay, that Inca site served rather as a convent for chosen women, that’s that, women devoted to religious service. I’m pretty certain the construction, yet, reveals fascinating clues to Inca life as that’s played out in all those remote regions.

One cool detail is the temple’s isolation as you’ll know, so you feel like a real discovery as that’s explored. Okay? The views of Lake Titicaca stretch from this vantage point. Yet those can be quite overwhelming, particularly during sunset. Okay? I’m gonna say spend like an hour or two around the island as that’s ample as you soak in its rather solemn, intense vibe.

The Downside: What They Don’t Always Tell You

So as pretty as, I mean the islands might seem? Okay! It’s only fair if you’ve thought about some problems and issues? Some people don’t often speak of. Sun Island, primarily in its southern region is getting packed, you might find other places better. Okay. And if you visit it in the peak season or maybe some of the popular festivals. Get ready, like, you should expect, and prepare, for crowds of camera wielding tourists. The serenity you imagine may then become slightly difficult to reach. I do like an escape. Is that right?

Altitude Sickness and Physical Exertion

Hey, if I haven’t said already. These islands are about 12,500 feet. Is that the height? More or less. Altitude. So if you arrive there right away from sea level, I would like to prepare you. Okay? You will struggle when hiking, and you should expect altitude sickness as I said, maybe some breathlessness, perhaps some headaches! So, plan two or three days so that you get comfortable at some elevation beforehand. So, consume plenty of coca tea, right?, just that one works well!

Accommodation: Basic is Best

Okay, so you fancy staying on the island for just a little while? That is that you’ll mostly encounter pretty simple guest houses and lodges. Really do keep in mind the amenities may not be quite luxurious, because, basically, comfort standards don’t match big-city stays, and in reality don’t you feel, actually, it brings home some real beauty?

Often what happens is rooms get simple, beds tend to feel stiff and showers often just dribble cool or cold water. If you plan any trip make sure you do bring any of your personal toiletries to avoid reliance and make sure they’re adequate.

Is Sun and Moon Island deserving exploration though, anyway?
