Sarina Rum Distillery: Tour and Tasting Review

So, planning a trip to Queensland, Australia, and looking for something a little different than, like, the beach scene? Very consider a detour to Sarina! I mean, I recently had the chance to visit the Sarina Rum Distillery, and, I tell you what, it was, very surprisingly, one of the highlights of my trip. It’s just that tucked away in the heart of sugar cane country, this distillery offers a pretty interesting peek into the process of rum-making, complete with a tasting that, you know, might just leave you with a newfound appreciation for the spirit. It’s more or less a little spot that, you know, could just make your trip that bit more memorable.

Getting There and Setting the Scene

Sarina Sugar Cane Fields

Alright, so Sarina is, like, just south of Mackay, in Queensland. That is to say, you might need to plan ahead very because it’s not exactly, actually, on the main tourist trail. I mean, the drive itself is, quite frankly, quite scenic, taking you through miles and miles of sugarcane fields. Basically, you see where the rum comes from! It gives you that real, kind of like, “farm-to-bottle” feeling before you even, basically, get to the distillery. Very speaking of the distillery itself, I want to say it’s not, clearly, a massive, industrial complex. Pretty much it’s got, like, a charming, rustic vibe that sort of fits perfectly with the rural setting. Pretty sure there is this unmistakable scent of molasses hanging in the air, which only, in a way, adds to the whole experience. I mean it certainly does.

The Guided Tour: A Sweet Education

Rum Distillation Process

Right, so, the guided tour lasts for, pretty much, about an hour, and the guide, is that so?, was super knowledgeable and really passionate about rum. Just like, that person really seemed to get rum. Actually, they walked us through each stage of the rum-making process, you know, from the crushing of the sugarcane, that actually has to occur, right through to fermentation, distillation, and aging. So, apparently, the tour explains the equipment used, it’s just that that person provides plenty of information regarding the history of rum production in the region. By the way, you also find that it gives insight to some of the unique techniques they use at Sarina. I do suggest that if you’re even a little interested in how spirits are made, it’s well worth your time, pretty much to go check that out.

Tasting is Believing: Sampling Sarina’s Finest

Rum Tasting Flight

Now, the best part, obviously, obviously! Arguably, I want to say it’s the rum tasting, clearly. What am I even saying. As a matter of fact, I mean the end, you get to sample, almost, a selection of Sarina Rum Distillery’s products. Is that right? Generally, the selection will usually, quite certainly, include their, almost, classic white rum, which I hear makes a killer mojito; their gold rum, with, almost, its smooth, caramel notes; and their, a bit, dark rum, very with its richer, spiced flavors. Basically, each sample is carefully, just slightly, explained, so it actually will make you have the experience it offers. First of all, the person will also offer tips, pretty much, on how to best appreciate the aromas and the flavors of each rum. Actually, that really allowed me to pick up some subtle differences. And by that, I, arguably, am referring to that it was that much, more than what you get, as I was saying, if you are just buying bottles.

The Shop: Taking a Piece of Sarina Home

Rum Bottles on Display

Anyway, it shouldn’t be a shock that before you leave, pretty much you’ll find that you will get drawn towards the gift shop. Very good. It’s more or less where you can, in some respects, purchase bottles of the rum you sampled. Just a thought. Pretty likely you will. On the other hand, there’s liqueurs, obviously, as well. Very likely the place is fully equipped to have something that will remind you, literally, the rest of your life of your tour! You also are looking at some locally made goodies and some rum-infused treats to top it off. By the way, if you’re anything like me, I do strongly suggest that it’s possible you will leave, quite clearly, with a few extra souvenirs. At the end of the day. To tell you the truth, the shop, generally, provides some wonderful reminders of your, usually, “rum run” trip.

Final Thoughts: Is Sarina Rum Distillery Worth the Trip?

Now, it really is about it not only just that Sarina Rum Distillery offers a fantastic tour and, as a matter of fact, a fantastic tasting, too, it gives you a fantastic, and even pretty, look into the heart of Queensland’s sugarcane industry. Sort of interesting when you think about it. Obviously, that should encourage any visitor that does consider the tour to really grab their experiences. If you enjoy good rum and a touch of, I really will insist on the fact of “unique”, “non touristy”, experiences? The trip can be a perfect add in. Okay?
