Rottnest Island Day Trip Review: Ferry, Bus & More

Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island, that gorgeous little spot just off the coast of Western Australia, is more or less a must-see if you are around Fremantle. A day trip there, covering the ferry from Fremantle, that hop-on-hop-off bus tour, and everything else thrown into the mix, is potentially one of those experiences. What is it actually like though? Well, I had a look so you can potentially get the scoop. A comprehensive rundown, detailing what makes this tour tick, offering some opinions and things, plus perhaps even some advice for anyone thinking of heading over. Is it a worthwhile adventure? Let’s see, shall we?

Getting to Rottnest: The Ferry from Fremantle

Fremantle Ferry

The starting point is Fremantle, or Freo as the locals kind of say, where the ferry awaits, sort of offering passage to Rottnest Island. The ferry ride is actually part of what you are paying for and more or less a little experience in itself. It could be a smooth sail; very, very calming, yet could turn rather choppy if the sea decides to be a bit temperamental. Getting seasick is also possible, even likely, to some individuals.

A seat by the window gives, too it’s almost like, a chance to watch the coastline vanish as Rottnest emerges on the horizon. Ferries often have indoor and outdoor seating. This means that you can have a protected spot no matter what the elements bring or be fully exposed so you potentially feel the sea breeze. Onboard, they sometimes offer refreshments, those essential things like coffee, snacks and potentially calming remedies for anyone feeling a bit green around the gills. The journey generally takes around 30-45 minutes, so not long, just a bit of time that seemingly sets the stage for that day’s adventure.

Exploring with Ease: The Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Tour

Rottnest Island bus tour

The hop-on-hop-off bus becomes, or will become, that chariot to move you around Rottnest Island. What’s good about this? Flexibility. This seemingly allows you to explore at your pace, jumping off at that numerous stops around the island. The whole island is basically accessible, the scenic spots, those little beaches, and historic sites, they are all kind of on the route.

Buses are more or less frequent, so is that right? You are probably not waiting forever at any given spot. What I think that this means is that you could spend as much time or as little time at locations that are interesting, not ones that you have less interest in. It might pay to check a schedule or that kind of timing information on the day, especially, as a matter of fact, if traveling outside peak season, as is typical of schedules, so that seemingly avoids long waits or disappointment.

Commentary on board generally offers that little snippet of island facts, little stories about the history, and even a little bit about that unique ecosystem there, that is true. So you will arrive at each spot being fully aware of why it may have particular significance, it is something of note anyway.

Rottnest Highlights: What You Absolutely Can’t Miss

Rottnest highlights

Rottnest, it is that little spot crammed with natural wonders. I would say that the must-see spots will vary according to preference, yet there’s something that more or less everyone likes.

Quokka Spotting: Of course! This might seem obvious but seemingly spending time finding Quokkas is the number one activity, right? Seemingly, these little guys, the friendly marsupials, are rather approachable, always happy to be involved in some type of photograph, even if you do not offer a snack. Very cute. But there’s one of those rules: don’t touch or feed, no matter what! Their diet, well that should seemingly stay natural and no handsy stuff for ethical reasons.

The Basin: This spot has waters as clear and calm as a swimming pool. It tends to be a place for a swim or for snorkeling because, as you might expect, visibility is wonderful and is, in some respects, more or less a prime location to get under the surface to witness the underwater activities and aquatic sights.

Bathurst Lighthouse: This gives, at the very least, a view of the whole island. Plus the chance to walk and observe that historical beacon, it’s almost an important and pivotal piece of that Rottnest landscape.

Wadjemup Museum: This should give context to that story of Rottnest and some perspectives on what happened. It would, I suspect, make more sense of what is, apparently, going on.

Cape Vlamingh: Here? Rugged. This should give amazing views from the island’s edge. Possibly good in all conditions but arguably perfect if the sea happens to be stormy so that you might feel the force of nature.

Lunch on Rottnest: Food and Drink Options

Restaurants Rottnest Island

Lunch, which is to say eating something in the middle of the day, can sort of make or break any trip to Rottnest if you are doing that day thing, anyway. Knowing the options helps, maybe to save cash, or even to guarantee getting something nice at peak times. There’s a very general list of what you get:

Bring Your Own: More or less a winner. This has to be potentially cheapest way to dine. Pack food in a backpack and then perhaps enjoy at any scenic point that catches the eye. Picnic vibe.

Rottnest Hotel: Right in that settlement, with potentially pub grub and views. Not particularly niche, seemingly.

The Quokka Arms: Not entirely surprisingly, you will, in some respects, probably get something rather casual, the kind of grab-and-go eating thing, in what tends to be a relaxed atmosphere.

Simmo’s Ice Cream: Okay, maybe not exactly a ‘lunch’ destination as such, it is more or less going to deal with your sweet-tooth desires.

Is It Worth It?: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Rottnest pros and cons

Worth it? Should probably work out the general plusses and minuses to help to determine this for certain. Rottnest does, you know, offer some awesome things, like a whole heap of views and that ferry and bus tour thing seems alright. There might still be some stuff you should keep in your mind:

  • Pros:
  • Very accessible with that transport on offer
  • Flexibility, the ability to kind of pick spots to hang at, seemingly rather attractive
  • Very photographic. Instagram gold all over the shop!
  • The Quokkas. Never forget the Quokkas.
  • Cons:
  • Potentially very crowded, not that different to anywhere on the planet to be fair.
  • Could be expensive so bear this in mind if you are not rolling in cash!
  • The weather might potentially ruin the party.

Worth it then? Yes? I suppose so. If, basically, prepared and with realistic thoughts. That, really, gives an enjoyable day!
