Rome Walking Tour: Secrets of the Eternal City – A Review
So, Rome, right? That incredibly famed location is steeped in time and stuffed with stories just waiting to be discovered. Of course, many ways exist to see the hotspots like the Colosseum or the Roman Forum. However, what about checking out the city’s underbelly? Getting a feel for that side of Rome is something the “Rome Walking Tour Through the Secrets of the Eternal City” attempts to do, and I thought I’d share what my experiences were like.
What Makes This Rome Tour Different?
Very many tours hit the exact same tourist traps. This tour, seemingly, has an angle that is just a little different. The people running it aim to show you that part of Rome that is hiding in plain sight. It’s a good mix of stories, plus quirky facts and bits of information that you maybe won’t find in your typical guidebook. In some respects, it’s perfect if you happen to be a returning visitor to Rome, or perhaps someone who has a soft spot for going off the beaten path.
My Experience on the Tour
As a matter of fact, it started in a central location; a very convenient starting place made meeting the tour effortless. The guide seemed super energetic and quite informed, and, honestly, was clearly in love with the city’s story. You could just see it. What’s nice too, is that they hand out these little audio devices, which are kind of genius. I say this, because that allowed me to hear clearly, even when our group was struggling to cope with very crowded Roman sidewalks.
I suppose, instead of regurgitating the usual history tidbits about, oh I don’t know, emperors and whatnot, our guide dove a little bit into a few legends, mysteries, and probably even the bizarre incidents you will find sprinkled through Rome’s long presence. Very fun! We strolled through parts of Rome that I hadn’t paid much thought to before. I mean, quiet little piazzas with incredible past lives, and shadowy alleyways with odd architectural details that practically shout out secrets if only you listen to them closely. One thing, something that really sticks out in my memory, anyway, is when our guide talked about the stories that come with some of the fountain designs. It felt like it was meant to make you look at these usual sites in a totally new light. Also, it wasn’t a gigantic group which was welcome as that meant it was easier to, like, get some personal interactions going with the guide, get any questions answered and, also, just have a bit more wiggle room as we made our way about.
Highlights and Standout Moments
There were a number of things that I personally enjoyed, so let’s try to nail down specifics. So, learning some strange trivia concerning the Mouth of Truth ( Bocca della Verità) was absolutely a moment to remember. I will admit, waiting in the queue can kind of take some of the sparkle away from experiencing that landmark, so being equipped with this interesting knowledge beforehand, did actually inject a bit more fun to the process. We visited the Aventine Hole, and getting to view St. Peter’s Basilica perfectly framed in it felt special, too; like you were discovering Rome in such a super unique kind of way. Basically, the guide even shared some fascinating insights into the lives of some, let’s say, more interesting people from Rome’s past. People that definitely never appear in official accounts, like the artists or even the revolutionaries whose stories give, in my view anyway, the city that added depth and texture.
What Could Be Improved?
Honestly, the tour happens mostly outside, and it does run no matter what the weather conditions are. It could be beneficial for anyone to check the forecast so they are prepared appropriately. Too, there had been times when, for instance, a few stories started to get just a little lengthy, that had the possibility of losing the attention of the crowd a little bit. Perhaps splitting up the stories, into a couple of pieces here and there during the tour could aid in keeping everyone, like, more engaged over that three hour period.
Is This Tour Right for You?
Arguably, If you happen to be the sort that has an interest in time, and you very much want to learn more regarding the layers and past that built the city, well this trip delivers exactly on those fronts. Likewise, the smaller tour group is pretty beneficial to those who, arguably, have a preference for something just a little bit more intimate when seeing the area; I know I sure did. One item to note is that given the nature of walking, you are going to need decent shoes, too.
Final Thoughts: Worth It?
So, at the end of the day, should you take this tour? Speaking from my own experiences, you, actually, very much should, if you are hoping to discover more regarding Rome’s lesser-known stories, but do so away from those usual hotspots. Its alternate style is what allows it to stand out, providing some intriguing looks into what helps to make the Eternal City so interesting.
