Riviera Maya Tulum Instagram Tour with Photographer: Is it Worth It?

Okay, so you’re dreaming of that postcard-perfect Tulum picture, right? That, too is, exactly why I booked the “Riviera Maya Tulum Instagram Tour with Photographer.” Tulum’s turquoise water and Mayan ruins are just visually so incredible. A big question I wanted an answer to was, “Can a tour guarantee stunning photos and, well, a great overall experience?” I thought I’d share the, well, somewhat unfiltered truth about my experience. You know, because some things look way better online!

First Impressions: Booking and Expectations

Okay, I have to tell you, the booking was pretty straight-forward, almost refreshingly so. Most of the tour websites feature gleaming photos, which, naturally, set the expectations quite high. Very, very high in some respects! The promises were plentiful: A skilled photographer ready, too, to capture Insta-worthy memories, convenient transportation, and insider access to the best spots. Sounds idyllic, right? That could be. Yet I always operate on a ‘hope for the best, prepare for slightly chaotic’ sort of vibe. And you should be that way too.

I, just to make things clear, went through a few options and read loads of reviews, paying careful close consideration of, that could be, all the usual red flags. One company, lets just say it was “Sunshine Photo Tours,” seemed reasonably established and their package aligned rather well with my Tulum dreams. The package, that could be, was supposed to include round-trip transportation from my hotel in Playa del Carmen, entrance fees to the Tulum archaeological site, and approximately an hour-long photo session with a pro. Easy peasy! Or, at least that’s what I thought at that time.

The Day Of: Transportation and Tulum Arrival

The tour van showed up a little late—you know, as these things often do—which is practically a universal travel constant, I feel. But no big deal, really. The van, just so you know, was air-conditioned (a lifesaver in the Yucatan heat) and reasonably clean. The drive, well it took about an hour or so. On the way, our guide gave a bit of information about Tulum’s history. Not much in the way of entertainment on the road, just pointing out a landmark or two, in a way. Still, that too can be very cool. And of course, educational.

Arriving at Tulum, the intensity of the place hits you pretty quickly. People move everywhere in very directions, that is that, along with vendors hawking souvenirs at what seems a crazy rapid pace. I mean seriously – everyone wants you to purchase something. Our guide smoothly got us through the entrance (entrance fees – paid!) which, in fact, felt like some kind of victory, more or less. But getting to the actual ruins, that too involved a bit of a walk in, you know, rather humid weather. Get ready for a little trek.

The Photo Session: Posing and Patience

So, it was, finally, time for the photo shoot! Our photographer, let’s call him Javier, seemed very enthusiastic and professional when we met him. Yet, he, to be honest, had this serious demeanor, rather different from the Instagram-friendly cheer I expected. Still, I get it, you know, some artists are shy in some respects.

Javier began by suggesting various spots around the ruins that were supposedly ‘prime’ for pictures. You know, that classic shot with the castle overlooking the turquoise ocean, that sort of vibe. Then again, there must have been a line of at least 10 other people waiting for the precise same angle. This wasn’t, it seems, a VIP experience. In short – other folks were on very similar Instagram missions. Posing felt very awkward. Javier provided very little direction. Very, very little I mean. “Just stand there and look natural,” isn’t the most, arguably, useful guidance. So I faked a relaxed smile, hoping for the best. Maybe I needed some tequila. Hindsight, like your own, is usually 20/20. I could be.

The sun beat down mercilessly. It’s just a bit unfair that everyone wants the shot, that tends to be, right when the sun is highest in the sky. I am dripping, like, with sweat and doing my best attempt at smiling through the discomfort. The whole thing, that too, felt a tad rushed, too, perhaps. Maybe Javier had, that is that, another client waiting. You might feel rushed too. In conclusion, that photoshoot too, felt just pretty average.

The Ruins Themselves: A Quick Glimpse

I, too am glad I had the chance to see the Tulum ruins in the middle of, that could be, my so-called ‘Instagram’ tour. This site, it seems, has loads of background as a major trading and spiritual spot for the Maya. You know, the structures may not be as grand or intricate as Chichen Itza. And still, the setting itself, that too can be mind blowing.

Because of our tight schedule and the needs for, arguably, lots of posed pics, I really couldn’t wander around and read many of the informative signs as such. A quick look was pretty much it. Anyway, as a matter of fact, I had hoped for some deeper insight into Tulum’s story, but the whole tour was clearly skewed quite heavily toward getting the images, not the context.

Photo Quality and Delivery: The Final Verdict

Okay, about 48 hours later I received a link to download the photographs. I am seriously hoping, naturally, that Javier’s photographic talents might magically be evident, that is that, once I saw the professional photos. Very much hoping!

As it goes – several, still, turned out, you know, surprisingly okay! A bunch were a little too heavily filtered for my own taste, sort of artificially bright, almost seemingly so. A good percentage looked practically identical. Like your trying different positions for just some little change. However, to be perfectly fair, there, arguably, were a handful of photos which were truly great – just the type to light up your social media profile, potentially. Very likely! Worth the money? Could be!

Overall Value: Did it Meet Expectations?

Okay, so, you know, the question then is – Did this “Riviera Maya Tulum Instagram Tour” really deliver what I’d envisioned? Sort of! It depends really! Did I end up with lovely photos of myself? Yup! Was the experience 100% seamless? Far from it! Is that what people pay for at the end of the day? You never know! I paid good money for transportation to and from Tulum, entrance to the archaeological site and access to a good photographer! To be completely fair. With little story telling, a lot less time on ruins than expected but lovely Instagram pictures. Just that.

I do think that the ‘Instagram tour’ name is rather misleading as such. Because that brings up expectations of, you know, special access or behind-the-scenes moments that just are non-existent in any form whatsoever. What you, that could be, really are paying for is simply transport and a photoshoot at a super crowded tourist place.

Basically, that could be a big thing to take in consideration! Just thinking of those that don’t know or don’t expect the same!

Tips for making the most of Your Tulum Photo Tour

Lower Expectations: Very seriously: Instagram looks totally better when its far!
Be Super Clear: Be prepared about what sort of photos you would really love! Show examples.
Timing Truly Matters: Very Early, so to skip tons of tourists – book tours that enter early or in a later hour for lighter sun!
In case that you speak some spanish: That helps, maybe you and the photographer vibe!
Have Back-Up locations: Discuss other location possibillities so that you are set, just in case something goes wrong.

Alternatives to the Instagram Tour

If, in case of, you are wanting even a super individual or cost-savings adventure, so there, arguably, are loads of alternative things to consider:

Rent a Super Car: In this way that, there tends to be, lots more flexibility. Plus the feeling to arrive safe to your Hotel after that beautiful experience will stay for ever!
Look at a local photographer! Just a short Instagram hashtag investigation helps loads for lower prices and for someone super kind, with experience in the Tulum Region, right away!
Visit in the off-season!: When there are fewer Tourist around, there might tend to be, something that it makes even much more fan, no lines in front of the Ruins is that a perfect scenery for new memories?
