Riga, that beautiful capital of Latvia, it’s often called the “Paris of the East,” and maybe that’s for good reason. So, it’s a real treat for anyone who enjoys places with those kind of buildings and a bit of history. Let me share what you should expect when you go. Getting Started in Riga Old Town

Basically, start right at the heart of things at the Town Hall Square. Then, see the Roland Statue and the House of the Blackheads. These are great spots that help you imagine Riga way, way back. So, the tour will show you buildings damaged during World War II. But, they have been rebuilt. This means now, they look like their true, awesome selves once more.

House of the Blackheads

The House of the Blackheads, I think that it’s a place that captures you instantly. Seriously, as a building, its super ornate, but the details are gorgeous, so there is really something to look at. To begin with, it had a bad time, so it’s great to see it back up like this. Oh, and the Blackheads were a brotherhood of unmarried merchants. It’s like your local bachelor’s club.

Next, make your way over to Alberta Street; really, this place is an Art Nouveau goldmine, you see. It’s lined with buildings created by the fantastic architect Mikhail Eisenstein (who, did you know, was Sergei Eisenstein’s father? Pretty cool, eh?). Typically, when walking this street, so you see facades showing faces and figures. They give life to the stone, basically it feels very much like walking through a sculpture park, actually. These details will have you pointing your camera up for what feels like hours. Typically the architectural choices include spiral staircases, stained glass windows, and unique patterns.

Restaurants, are those like the taste centers where you can go for something really good like, dark rye bread soup or grey peas with bacon. When in Riga, by the way consider you will walk on stone. Wear things that are ok for doing a lot of standing and that will cushion your foot from impact.
