Review: Unforgettable 4-Day Desert Expedition from Marrakech to Fez
So, are you thinking about seeing Morocco? You are not alone. It’s almost definitely a place of captivating beauty, with bustling markets and sweeping desert landscapes, a spot that stays with you. I mean, that trip from Marrakech through the Sahara to Fez? It’s more or less an iconic experience. I figure you want the lowdown on what it’s really like, I guess, and whether it’s something you should be doing. Here’s, very much, an experience, where I share the bits and pieces I learned and give, rather, my recommendations, for that whole 4-day circuit.
Setting Out from Marrakech: First Impressions
As a matter of fact, it all started in Marrakech, that sensory-loaded city where every corner appears to be yelling for your attention. It’s a real party for all five senses. You see, that starting day gets rolling fairly early, a bit around 8 AM, when your driver is there, I want to say, right on the button at your riad or hotel. What do I need to mention, arguably, it’s worth grabbing a quick breakfast—definitely those Moroccan pancakes if you get a chance! They provide such a good way to kick stuff off. The initial part of your drive sort of meanders through, maybe, those High Atlas ranges. In fact, those landscapes shift quickly as you move, I guess. You may be getting from that vibrant city of Marrakech up through rugged mountain passes; you, actually, would discover charming little spots here and there.
Speaking of little spots, there might be Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village—a “ksar”—that looks like something out of a flick, given its claim to movie fame—”Gladiator” among others. In other words, wander around those old, nearly, earthen buildings. It feels really similar to stepping straight into a historical scene. That kasbah also kind of provides this fantastic photographic opportunity. Remember, definitely, getting the sun exactly right. Basically, your first day ends up getting closer to Ouarzazate, sometimes called that ‘door of that desert’, where you just sort of check in. After you do check in, naturally, that’s where you unwind from those travels, that are, actually, kind of long.
Across the High Atlas: Scenery and Stops Along the Way
Okay, day two kind of shifts that focus to those real desert stretches as you travel from Ouarzazate up toward that Merzouga region. As a matter of fact, this segment does not merely bring those landscapes. You get all the gorgeous natural looks, basically. There are many culture shots you could focus on too, actually. So, along that road, you should stop at places, more or less, like the Todra Gorge. That gorge can kind of stun you with the way they dramatically lift way up there, pretty amazing if you appreciate rock forms.
Actually, in a little while you probably show up to Erfoud, which I always felt to be called like the ‘date capital’, right, so definitely. Arguably, here is your opportunity so you may like grab that plate full of local dates, because you might as well. Trust us on this one. When the sun kind of decides it’s sinking lower and casting long shadows, as a matter of fact, you’ll eventually arrive somewhere near Merzouga. Basically, you get a view of those Erg Chebbi dunes, maybe just sort of beckoning as a prelude regarding things to come! These will then kind of introduce themselves that night once getting comfy there.
Merzouga and the Sahara Desert: Camel Treks and Desert Camps
In short, I feel like the real showpiece part on any tour in this area seems, to be in Erg Chebbi. It seems pretty magnificent. Imagine these: it seems, pretty orange sand mountains expanding until somewhere at which the eye lets them not continue seeing. Arguably, what sets off your overnight time with those nomad people often? This is really that leisurely camel riding over those peaks and through these sands somewhere about when something has been setting for this long time. When I was over that mountain, actually, my body and nature were at equilibrium!
Basically, once at this camp, something which makes it cool feels like you are going so primitive that some spots still have, nearly, all accommodations fully setup by their owners; anyway, there feels really zero loss during their performance as a nomad! They might even provide great conventional dishes beneath what appear to us like millions stars during dinner itself. Then perhaps there happens some kind desert music where, sometimes, somebody does druming. Actually, it sounds really fun because people laugh a lot at these times—but they often do before! It is rather fascinating hearing desert storytelling after having fallen off some rock as everyone goes resting underneath their warm covering within yurts. So everyone kind feels rather small compared to all because each sky really extends itself quite broadly upwards! As I was just thinking over what to tell after everything being performed over there and it got, quite, early?
Sunrise Spectacles and Village Visits
First of all, what will wake somebody feels usually quite more valuable rather only than those hotel or alarm because nothing does quite replicate, actually, witnessing brightness happen over dune zones after those complete shadows, obviously. Next just capture something just as rapid towards consuming, very quickly, what that early taste had just shown just a few hours beforehand! That sun casts what appears almost similar some painting during some period with calm and vibrant coloring making each moment pretty surreal and ideal during which one captures something worth keeping long lasting through their soul when their own presence exists through everything within!
However eventually one starts driving up once again over onto regular driving, I swear! This takes into this stop onto villages. People may feel very grateful during witnessing real everyday working over what some real community experiences happen daily. I mean for instance one potentially catches the sight of how Berber inhabitants does show conventional making and trades along certain sections around their region allowing understanding of history from prior cultures to present one being examined throughout the excursion alone. Anyway these bits give contextual aspects from everything encountered earlier therefore increasing not that just that fun factors. Instead also give us deep understanding onto individuals having really lived inside of them making anything much stronger in sense of remembrance from any excursion ever started until over.
The Route to Fez: Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains
For instance, those driving back out over by Erfoud just shifts slightly into some north sector somewhere along inside through this Ziz River bottom part and begins being known onto Atlas. What appears really wonderful with all that river bottoms shows just rows amongst some mountains thus bringing such stunning looks anywhere as things exist pretty tall nearby any roadside which someone sees everywhere. What really surprises people seems those transitions around scenes change since what shows first gives path before these thickwoods after experiencing bare sand! Each landscape starts evolving regularly while progressing and shows what many others feel and do once making its entire sense which makes visiting something worthy instead! Therefore pay what is available or one becomes likely getting lost permanently between those regions before getting ready when having one another’s experience begin showing soon next morning either.
We should plan visiting something referred as, very well, ‘Switzerland within Morocco,’ called ‘Ifrane,’ known through that specific European structure combined with which that town shows! It could appear slightly peculiar while that area looks much unusual against many which someone encounters usually across everywhere upon this excursion especially those built across somewhere near near here yet adds something worthy after anything. Then that journey drops back out up till Fes wherein those historical buildings eventually get discovered when reaching toward day close. Eventually things become a bit less new once people check-in into wherever lodging has occurred. Anyway you are almost over for one memorable long experience somewhere round Marrakech all by moving toward just some different culture when experiencing all types. What happens afterwards depends what to proceed during from over within for that trip so decide which suits anything going next.
