Tirana Bovilla Lake Gamti Mountain and Kruja

Albania, is that what springs to mind when you’re planning your next getaway? Maybe, maybe not, right? But let me tell you, there’s something really special brewing in this Balkan nation, especially around its capital, Tirana. A day tour that hits Tirana, Bovilla Lake, Gamti Mountain, and Kruja? That might just change your perspective. I went on this trip not too long ago, and, you know, I felt like sharing my experience to give you an idea if it is something you will remember or not.

The Allure of Tirana: Starting Point

Tirana

Tirana, right, it’s where everything gets going. So, what’s so captivating, very fascinating about Tirana? The vibe, basically. After the long communist era, the city has reinvented itself as a lively, colorful capital. Like your morning shot of espresso, it really wakes you up!

You may kick things off in Skanderbeg Square, very large area dedicated to the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. It is an interesting name, isn’t it? The National Historical Museum flanks one side, presenting a panorama of Albanian history, quite interesting! You can stroll through the Et’hem Bey Mosque, it is a remarkable piece of Ottoman architecture that amazingly survived religious oppression, and the Clock Tower, they have very interesting and fascinating architecture. The architecture seems as old as time.

What I find extremely likable regarding Tirana is how it blends old and new. Blloku district, once reserved for the communist elite, now is super trendy with cafes, boutiques, plus a spirited night scene. I am sure that, the city is extremely walkable, so, I encourage you to allow yourself a bit, a little time to absorb the environment and talk with the residents; who are really friendly and give you insights of all types of information about where they come from.

Bovilla Lake: A Splash of Serenity

Bovilla Lake

Leaving behind the rhythm of Tirana, there is a sense of what comes next: Bovilla Lake, it offers a dramatically different backdrop. Only about a 40-minute trip from the city center, you get to a fresh, very tranquil escape. It looks very beautiful!

The lake, is that a man-made reservoir? It supplies Tirana with drinking water, and believe me, the landscape around it will give you all kinds of amazing inspiration. It’s one of those locations where, in a way, you could spend all day just taking pictures. I usually hate landscape and nature. I know, that sounds terrible! But it felt good here. Does that make sense?

A bit, a little hike up Gamti Mountain delivers, maybe, arguably the best views of the lake and surrounding hills. The climb is manageable, even if you’re not the fittest person; actually, that sounds more like me! It may get warm during peak summer hours so do come well prepared.

That view, still, it’s amazing. I was lucky with a bluebird sky. Looking out at the peaceful lake below, with sunlight shimmering on the water, still it was the kind of vision you feel very grateful that you can see with your own eyes. Trust me, this is paradise.

Gamti Mountain: Heights of Adventure

Gamti Mountain

The adventure doesn’t just end with admiring Gamti Mountain from afar; you are able to walk up it, to witness some more stunning views of the region. The trek isn’t too intense, I mean you are able to do it without too many breaks, even if you aren’t an avid hiker.

As you make your way to the top, so you’ll pass by diverse fauna. In some respects, it’s so serene and relaxing because you don’t have any modern day technologies. If you stop, take a look back and think. Take a big deep breath. Now, do you appreciate it?

The top shows, just a little panoramic sight that is absolutely spectacular. Overlooking Bovilla Lake with the mountains as far as the eyes are able to see, is one of those experiences, I mean that you wish would stay forever. For photographers, is that heaven? Totally!

Kruja: A Step Back in Time

Kruja

Finally, we get to Kruja, and it gives you so many interesting feelings and a huge impression since it’s steeped in history. You know, it’s the hometown of Skanderbeg, which to me is still, kind of, an interesting name, the Albanian national hero. So, if you have any curiosity to know a bit more about Albania’s history you should check it out.

Kruja Castle, arguably perched atop a hill, offers great views of the nearby area and, more or less, gives you a real sense of Albania’s turbulent past. What happened here? So much battles against the Ottoman Empire were centered right here at this place.

The Old Bazaar, still it’s another highlight; that has tiny, winding streets jam-packed with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to antiques. Naturally, I wanted some mementos of the getaway for me, my family, and for friends! It feels as though time basically stands still. Very fascinating, actually!

Tour Considerations: Is it Worth it?

Is this all-in-one tour a very smart choice, you think? I do have to say yes! You get such an assorted taste of Albania – from the dynamism of Tirana to the serene lake views, the rush of climbing Gamti Mountain, to the historical depth of Kruja. Just a bit of something for every person.

Is this a great deal in terms of time? Extremely. Everything is prepared. Basically, transport, guidance, and access to the destinations. In that case, I do recommend wearing comfy footwear. There is tons of walking in these areas.
