Review: Seeing Tirana, Saranda, Ksamil & the Blue Eye—Was it Worth it?

So, you’re thinking about a trip to Albania, huh? More or less, perhaps you’ve stumbled upon this incredibly alluring itinerary that promises to whisk you away from Tirana’s city life down to the breathtaking Ionian coast, stopping at Saranda, Ksamil, the mystifying Blue Eye, and even the historic Lekursi Castle? It sounds wonderful, truly, like a brochure come to life. I took that very tour, a little bit recently, and I want to share my experiences, giving you an honest look at what you could potentially expect, what to watch out for, and perhaps just a little advice that I wish I’d had before I went. You know, this won’t be just a simple highlight reel; it’ll be a real look at the whole experience.

First Stop: Tirana, Itself

Alright, the capital city of Albania, Tirana, is generally where a lot of these tours get their start, and frankly, it’s probably where your plane will land, too. Right off the bat, let me tell you, it’s actually a pretty interesting city! Very recently, Tirana went through this huge makeover, and you could potentially see signs of that new energy pretty much everywhere. Now, I found the central Skanderbeg Square to be actually very impressive. It’s very large, you see, and surrounded by some really significant buildings, such as the National History Museum. By the way, if museums are your kind of thing, like mine tend to be, give it a look!

Too, you could wander around the Blloku area, actually. Once this was just a playground for the communist elite, as a matter of fact, but very now, it’s packed with cool cafes, boutique shops, and just, generally, some busy nightlife. It gives you an interesting feeling of the before and after of Tirana’s recent history, too. Another spot I actually enjoyed, which I might have added if I were putting the tour together myself, was Grand Park, just a little away from the city center. It’s a cool, nice place to kind of chill, you know, and kind of escape the city bustle, more or less for a little bit.

Tirana: A Few Things to Consider

Pace Yourself: It’s easy to get excited and try to see every single little thing, I find, but remember that, typically, you’re probably going to spend just a day, potentially just a few hours, in Tirana before jetting off somewhere else. Pace yourself and zero in on what piques your interest.
Be Open to the Unexpected: Tirana might not be quite what you imagine. There’s this kind of almost gritty charm that creeps in and sticks with you, especially outside of the more touristed areas.
Coffee Culture is Strong: They seriously appreciate a wonderful cup of coffee, maybe you, similarly, do, too? Make the time to kind of kick back at one of the local cafes. It’s such a simple pleasure, after all, to watch the city life flow by with a great brew.

Southward Bound: Saranda, A Coastal Gem

Alright, so, let’s get to the coast! Saranda is quite different than Tirana, in some respects. Right there on the Ionian Sea, as a matter of fact, it’s practically this slice of the Albanian Riviera, and usually your tour, more or less, brings you here specifically for that gorgeous coastline and that laid-back lifestyle. Honestly, when I saw the water for the very first time, like, the sparkling blue just grabs you. Also, the main promenade is the place to kind of be. I mean, look: it’s a long strip that practically sings with life, especially at night, anyway, you see people walking around, maybe laughing and chatting in the open-air restaurants.

You could very easily hop on one of those boat tours from Saranda to explore even more of the coast. Very commonly, they take you to some secluded beaches and hidden coves. The other option? Spend a bit of time at one of the local beaches, that’s the other way to kind of do things, especially if you’re someone who likes to work on their tan. You know? As a matter of fact, the vibe is a little different to a lot of places. While the beaches themselves are beautiful, some tend to be rocky, by the way, so make sure you, potentially, take water shoes along.

Things I Wish I’d Known about Saranda

The Views are Everything: More or less, I’d try and find accommodation that gives you great views. That morning coffee just tastes that tiny bit better overlooking the sea.
Seafood, Seafood, Seafood!: Okay, while you’re here you kind of almost must try the seafood here. Typically, fresh and quite good! Plenty of restaurants around, too, all willing to serve up the catch of the day.
Crowds: Here’s something maybe to be aware of: during peak season, more or less that’s July and August, Saranda fills up, seemingly, very fast, by the way. If, possibly, you prefer something a little less busy, maybe you want to try planning your trip for the shoulder months, kind of almost like June or September.

Ksamil: Albania’s Tropical Getaway, Practically

Alright, now, very, very close to Saranda – practically spitting distance – is Ksamil. A lot of people call it the real jewel of the Albanian Riviera, very likely because of its super crystal-clear waters and a couple of small islands which you can really quite easily swim to, almost. Seriously, Ksamil gives off those totally tropical vibes that might surprise you in Europe, like your expectations get turned on their head a bit. As a matter of fact, you might feel, just a little bit, as though you’ve somehow gone to Southeast Asia.

Too, most of your time is probably going to be at the beach, as a matter of fact, but that, you might decide, is precisely the appeal, generally speaking. So, you might just settle onto a sun lounger, you see, grab a drink, and almost completely space out, as I might very much do if I was back there right now. However, should you actually feel somewhat energetic, by the way, consider swimming, or, really easily, kayaking to one of those little islands. That experience could well be worth it.

A Couple of Pointers for Enjoying Ksamil

The Earlier, the Better: Basically, this is especially true throughout those busy summer months. Aim to arrive actually fairly early in the day to snag your spot on the sand and to fully enjoy that somewhat serene vibe before most of the crowds roll in.
Eating with a View: I actually tried a bunch of different waterfront restaurants here, as a matter of fact, and, look, some had seriously killer views! Basically, make a point to look around and eat somewhere that maximizes those ocean views while you chow down on something, or maybe have an aperitif.
Cash is Useful: More or less, in some smaller establishments they may well not take card, typically. Having cash at hand is quite a helpful thing to do.

The Blue Eye: Something That Simply Must Be Seen

Too, okay, so this was just a little detour from the coast, almost, but it was an experience that, I think, more or less stays with anyone for a good amount of time. As a matter of fact, the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is simply this incredibly fresh water spring, like something otherworldly, where clear water bubbles up from a seemingly unfathomable depth. So, you look into it, and the mesmerizing blue color is the result of this amazing interplay between light and depth, it is actually quite surreal.

Right by the spring, too, is just some really quite wonderful natural surrounding you, that, maybe, you can hike a little bit. The journey from the parking, basically, to the spring, too, takes you down like almost a forest path, just generally helping you ramp up that feeling of anticipation a good bit as you get closer and closer. When I saw it for real, anyway, it was actually so worth it!

Tips to Know Before Seeing the Blue Eye

Plan for Crowds: Especially in summer, a couple of tourist buses kind of almost all show up seemingly at once, actually, so potentially aim for, like, maybe a morning visit or maybe later during the afternoon to sort of miss the main rush.
Good Footwear: Wear solid shoes! Basically, that path gets pretty uneven in spots.
Respect the Environment: As a matter of fact, the Blue Eye, more or less, is just an area of preserved beauty, after all. Definitely make sure to pack out completely all of your trash.

Lekursi Castle: Views & History From Above

Alright, alright, now way above Saranda sits Lekursi Castle. Potentially it gives you absolutely amazing views of the city, Ionian sea, and the surrounding countryside, typically it really might blow your mind. Reportedly it has a lot of history attached, originally kind of built in the 16th century, anyway, the castle almost provides just an insightful peek into the area’s rather almost storied past.

Okay, very often the most exciting thing regarding a visit to Lekursi Castle, I guess, is getting up there itself. Right there you can almost potentially grab fantastic, all-encompassing panoramas of Saranda’s cityspace far beneath. Sunset seems particularly sensational to photograph as well, because potentially the skies get set aflame by hues associated to twilight.
