Review: Sal Island Group Day Trip – See the Best Highlights
If you’re thinking of visiting Sal Island, Cape Verde, a group full-day tour could be the ticket. I mean, really getting to know the island in one shot? Seems appealing, and it kind of is, specifically when you are short on time or want a taster of what is available. I took one just last month, so I want to share my thoughts. So, this review will go into the good parts, those less great, and what you may want to think about before booking one of your own.
First Stop: The Murky Charm of Pedra de Lume Salt Mine
Pedra de Lume, which, that, it’s set inside an ancient volcano crater, and well, is first on the list. Floating in the ridiculously salty water is, like, interesting. Almost floating effortlessly? Is that a real thing! So, the scenery? Somewhat strange to behold, but in a cool way. You will want to bring your towel and maybe some cheap water shoes. I almost didn’t think about those bits before heading out and that would have been a shame! Basically, the salt sticks, like your feet may feel a tad sore after the float. The changing huts? Are, you know, what they are. Not exactly top notch, though functional. Just be set for quick changes. Basically, think “beach changing room, but, well, more rustic.” Then the gift shop? It seems to be packed with, really packed with salt-related souvenirs, should that be your bag.
Buracona: The Blue Eye and Coastal Views, Well, Almost.
Buracona’s “Blue Eye” is apparently something many get buzzed about and really, that, really gets talked up, still, the reality is a bit less mind blowing. When conditions are right, meaning, yes the sun is aligned just so, that hole in the rock turns a glowing blue. Yet on the average day? Hmm, less so. The coastal views are, really they’re dramatic, so, though. I suggest you watch the waves that crash up the rocks – you do get awesome photo ops, truly, you really do! So, too the natural pool? Like it’s really calm, plus inviting, should you fancy a quick dip.
Lunch Stop: Santa Maria – A Moment to Breathe and Nibble
So, lunch usually happens in Santa Maria. That seaside town which it is, really bursts with restaurants. This place is, you get that taste of what the local flavor is about, yet, yet do be aware of that tourist prices? So, really, they can be very real. Strolling around, seeing all of those colorful buildings is really cool, should you have some extra time on your hands. Then, of course, there is that beach – it really buzzes with folks, as they are chilling out or buying those keepsakes.
Shark Bay: Getting Close with Lemon Sharks
The prospect to spot lemon sharks, really, truly up close in Shark Bay? It does get me a bit hyped, basically, I’ll tell you! Mind you, there is a bit of a wade over those rocky bits to reach there, almost, so some water shoes are, actually they are helpful. As far as the sharks are concerned? You do almost see them hanging in the shallows. They are, after all, not some massive scary things you imagine from those flicks – they’re shy little ones! Is that experience alone worth doing the trip for? Probably not. Still, really it’s interesting and that really makes for some stories you can tell back home.
Kite Beach: Seeing the Pros in Action
If you’re even slightly into kitesurfing, a visit to Kite Beach is almost like gold. Seeing people showing what is possible on the water, so, really, that is great stuff. Or, if the conditions are wrong? There is almost not always action. Still? You can see the sand, like the views from this part of that island are pretty awesome. Like take it easy as a moment for enjoying, before hopping onto the tour van once again.
The Ups and Downs: Is it Worth It?
Group full-day tours? They offer convenience, especially, really especially if you do not want that bother with hiring a ride or setting out all the places solo. Still? These days mean you just hit that highlights. You just do not get into things super deeply. In addition, like, too, you’re sticking to a schedule, then if you wish to hang out at a location for some extra bit? Nope! And the group vibe? Like it may or may not float that boat, basically! I’ve been out with folks on that spectrum which is very, very chatty all down to really quite reserved, basically, just think of your, like you’re on a school bus type experience! Is this really something for you? This very question is something you must ask!
Questions About This Full-Day Excursion
Can I customize my Sal Island tour?
So, that depends, usually. Some companies do offer some private options that means that you tailor that stuff a little better to your needs. This route can get pricy so, too! Also this option removes the benefits of low costing, when you are touring with other travelers.
What should I pack for my day trip?
There are a few essentials. Sunblock is, like one obvious one, sunnies, water bottle, hat – there is little bit of shade out there, by the way! Bring a towel if, really if you will be paddling! Cash helps just a little with food purchases and little souvenirs. Yes I did mean some sturdy shoes if that is not all beaches. Do be realistic about space because, well you still have room after souvenirs.
Are these excursions kid friendly?
A good question – somewhat these type of days are almost right with kids. Like think if those long times traveling between destinations on the car/bus will suit your family! You have the sharkies, the beach, or you may just require some distraction stuff with snacks to see you out. Yes, snacks are essential.
Are meals and refreshments included?
Often the actual lunch stops happen to be factored. Very often drinks, and, too, refreshments are just what you cover out of your own budget. Still that gives people flexibility on options versus preset kind of offerings, really it does offer just that choice, well depending!
So, at the end of that day, going on Sal Island for an entire day adventure almost has that element like flicking across various radio stations, really quickly! So, you almost catch the tune of each station, then do not stick with anything enough that you know that song by heart! If you are short on spare time, but still that want to see plenty, these are really great options. You could always make some return trips to the spot, and if anything particularly got to you or did pique an interest.
So, that’s your peek into Sal Island. Safe travels.
