Review: Puerto Natales Base of the Towers Day Hike
So, the hike to the Base of the Towers in Torres del Paine is quite a well-known trek. It’s almost like, it’s on pretty much everyone’s Patagonia bucket list. People travel, too, from all over, and they are looking to stare, basically, at those breathtaking granite spires. What’s interesting is that I was actually there this past season, and I had that experience myself! I thought that I’d put something down regarding what I feel you need to know to decide if this hike really is for you and how to prepare for what I’d say, can be pretty, very, challenging conditions.
Getting to the Start: The First Step of Your Adventure
First off, I reckon, if you’re planning on hitting the Base of the Towers hike from Puerto Natales, is that the early bird, yeah, you know, catches the worm, but in this instance, the early bus gets you a seat. So, you, too, will be finding yourself getting up way before sunrise. I did, anyway, as I grabbed a bus that left around 7:00 AM. I do think that you, you know, have to book tickets in advance, particularly if your travel is actually during peak season. I got mine a couple of days before from Bus Sur, that’s what they were. It’s also quite easy, seemingly, to book via their webpage or, maybe, you could pop into their little, actually rather small office right there in Puerto Natales.
Then you might be asking, how long is the journey, that, seemingly, takes you into Torres del Paine National Park? Just so you’re aware, the bus journey takes approximately two hours or so. As a matter of fact, that included a quick stop at Cerro Castillo. This is, kind of, more or less, just for the ranger to check passports and, well, give a brief, you know, introductory speech, it seemed. Then, a little later, there was another brief, perhaps about 15 minutes, stop at Laguna Amarga entrance to, basically, actually pay your park fee. As I remember, it set me back about 21,000 CLP (Chilean Pesos) or, you know, $25-ish. They often accept cards, but, maybe, you would rather have some local cash in hand, just in case.
Anyway, is that you’ll finally be arriving at the Refugio Central/Las Torres entrance, seemingly, at around 9:00 AM. Just so you know, you’ll soon realize that you’re very much amongst lots of others setting out, or, that, are arriving for their very own adventure to see these towers. Don’t dawdle about for too long at this spot. Get those boots on and get a wriggle on. Trust me that starting sooner, anyway, is actually so very much better to keep ahead of possible congestion further up the trail.
Trail Conditions and Terrain: What to Expect Underfoot
So, as I made my way along the track to get to the towers, too, it’s almost clear that, basically, this ain’t a walk in the park! Yeah, literally! A fair bit of the hike includes ascents which, just so you are in the picture, are fairly testing. You, you know, will have varied conditions underfoot which go, certainly, beyond smooth paths. There are, actually, rocky bits and looser scree slopes along the last part of the rise, which you might find very tiresome.
That said, is that the opening stretch of trail which links the Refugio Central with the Campamento Torres is, actually, mostly manageable, with modest inclines. But the ascent is that begins after Campamento Torres and proceeds toward the peak that’s often known as tougher. That said, I reckon, allow extra time, you know, to cover those more intense parts of trail, especially for actually those that perhaps don’t have that regular hiking experience.
Anyway, weather! Yeah, of course. We also mustn’t disregard the wild mood swings down in Patagonia. Conditions that, literally, you wouldn’t think too much about can range really swiftly. So, there can be sunshine one minute, and next you might, like your clothing, is now plastered all over you because of the rain. That could be very challenging too! Layering-up and, potentially, popping a weatherproof outer shell on is, clearly, pretty much a smart move.
Highlights Along the Way: Enjoying the Scenery
But, you will want to remember why you’re there! Is that there is a very good number of viewpoints, which make for great rests that also deliver fantastic sights during the entire route. Just so you’re aware, I can quite readily conjure up that vibrant and deep, perhaps actually dark, green surrounding when I think of those Lenga forests you go by in the earlier parts. This is where, obviously, you, basically, are more or less shaded from the elements, too.
And later you have, basically, that section through the glacial moraine where, honestly, is that, yes it is tougher trekking, anyway, the encompassing vistas start to spread open. Glimpses too of azure lakes in the far distance will take some of that sting out of your tired legs, basically. The feeling when you, you know, first lay eyes on the towers? Oh, that is special, actually! They emerge pretty suddenly as you approach the top part, seemingly.
In other words, as you, kind of, go nearer the final ascent, or approach, is that the imposing towers are revealed! Suddenly it is a rewarding reveal of what nature is really about! Anyway, a glacial lake at its foot does also provide a location in which to rest, literally, to just sit. And also, it does supply that fantastic chance, maybe, to get snaps from angles on a beautiful composition, clearly.
Reaching the Base of the Towers: An Unforgettable Vista
As a matter of fact, that last stretch right up that Base of the Towers has got, really, to be among hiking’s toughest pulls I’ve seen. The reward will very soon present itself the moment that you will have done, maybe, scrambling to get through that granite landscape. So, there they are: the Towers rising. Actually, almost going directly from their mirror picture reflecting onto, literally, the ice cold lagoon.
Arguably is that if the clouds aren’t playing ball on that day, seemingly, that mountain itself could, by the way, stay out of sight, which has happened to some I did know, maybe. Still, the vista across is that basin still gives out that remarkable view, actually. Most who succeed there just absorb this wonderful, you know, picture while resting. I guess this place is, by the way, deservedly, that highly regarded point along, anyway, the Patagonia circuit.
At the end of the day, taking snacks and hydrating really regularly are musts. This, honestly, doesn’t just help with vigor levels. I guess it gives one time, almost, to take notice. It’s about just capturing the surroundings while recharging. What is really a feast to, clearly, witness anyway!
Essential Tips and Recommendations
Too it’s almost crazy but getting to the Towers in a day does mean quite a rush if, very, the itinerary goes to plan, in other words. What I mean is that by taking two days out, it actually means, too, more relaxation and opportunities which can lead to taking lots of shots from multiple places.
Anyway, is that bringing that power bank up, say for devices, is seriously prudent. This, by the way, means it will be so very unlikely to run out if trying to grab pictures up close while, sort of, preserving memories, even if not at those, actually, electrical charge spots.
So, a small, almost portable, lightweight backpack may, literally, be favorable when coming on the track. That is as if you do choose to bring too big one along you soon feel those effects by carrying the extra heft and not going as lightly across slopes. At the end of the day the lightness and free body lets somebody have lots of that better freedom and adaptability going all through those different zones, literally.
In that case, it’s worth looking into the availability of booking accommodation in Torres del Paine, you see. Too it’s almost sad but by planning, really, more duration than you really intended could mean seeing quite less individuals around and an actual chance to hike, say, that trek without seeing those multitudes.
Anyway is that by finding, potentially, multiple options on clothes types may mean, frankly, managing many of Patagonia’s weather swings much easier. I actually advocate clothing within layers while taking the opportunity, honestly, to just either drop those, literally, or just add them to adjust to any type of changes, obviously.
