Review: Newport Ghosts Seaside Hauntings & Hags Tour

Planning a visit to Newport, Rhode Island? And very much wanting something different, a break from the beaches and mansions? Well, then a ghost tour could be just it! The “Newport Ghosts: Seaside Hauntings & Hags Tour” seemed like, sort of, the perfect choice for a slightly spooky evening activity, so I gave it a go. Here’s what I discovered, along with whether I think you should maybe try it out, too.

A Spooky Start: Meeting the Guide

The meeting spot was, just a little, conveniently located right in the middle of the historic district, making it reasonably easy to find even in the gathering dusk. Our guide, clad in attire that was just a little reminiscent of colonial times, greeted everyone with, like, a warm but certainly mysterious smile. They were holding a lantern, so too it’s almost a classic ghost tour touch, instantly setting the scene. The group was pretty sizable, which, anyway, sometimes made it a bit challenging to hear everything clearly, especially with the street noise.

Strolling Through Shadows: The Tour Route

historic street night

The tour route took us, you know, through some of the oldest parts of Newport, wandering past colonial-era buildings and dimly lit alleyways. I have to say, the atmosphere alone was, arguably, enough to give you chills! We paused at several locations with reputations for being haunted. One particularly chilling tale involved, like, a sea captain’s vengeful spirit said to still roam his former home. I will say, these spots did feel strangely colder, so, yeah, it might just have been my imagination.

Hauntings and History: The Stories Told

Our guide really shined when relaying the ghost stories! They wove together local history with paranormal claims rather skillfully, which made, like, the whole thing feel a lot more believable and far more engaging. We heard accounts of everything from restless spirits to suspected witchcraft, with details that were actually well-researched. It wasn’t just, that, about jumpscares; it was history brought to life… or maybe death?

The Hag Element: A Unique Twist

historical witch trial

What set this ghost tour slightly apart was its focus on the “hags” of Newport’s history. The guide spent time explaining the legends and beliefs around witchcraft, and that really tied it to specific locations. One stop involved, like, the story of a woman accused of witchcraft, with the guide presenting pretty compelling historical context. It offered an insightful look into the darker aspects of Newport’s past, which added, so, some depth to the usual ghost stories.

Things to Keep in Mind: What Could be Improved

The group size, at times, was maybe a tad too big. Especially when standing on narrow sidewalks, it was, like, not always super easy to see and hear everything the guide said. A slightly smaller group might, arguably, enhance the whole thing. It may permit far more personal interaction and a bit of increased clarity. Plus, while the lantern was a fantastic atmospheric touch, extra lighting in certain darker areas might be nice just for safety.

Worth a Walk? Final Verdict

All things considered, the Newport Ghosts: Seaside Hauntings & Hags Tour is, pretty much, a good way to spend an evening! It balances spooky stories with genuine historical information in a fairly interesting way. If you are drawn to ghosts or local lore, and just a little keen to see a different side of Newport, I would maybe recommend this tour. It’s, like, family-friendly enough, mostly well-researched, and often spooky enough to give you, you know, the chills. Just possibly arrive a bit early to grab a spot up front!
