Review: Lima – Nazca Lines – Huacachina Full Day Tour

So, you’re thinking of checking out the full-day tour from Lima that whisks you away to both the mysterious Nazca Lines and the desert oasis of Huacachina? It’s almost a whirlwind adventure, that is, and there’s a fair bit to chew over before you sign up.

First Impressions: Getting There Is Half the Fun (or Not?)

bus ride in peru

The tour usually starts super early, that is, think before sunrise kind of early. The pickup from your hotel is normally prompt, that is reassuring when you’re running on minimal sleep. It’s very a lengthy bus ride, rather, so settle in. We are talking several hours on the road, that is, making it important to bring a book, download a movie, or try to get some shut-eye. The buses are pretty comfy, typically, with reclining seats, but bumpy roads sometimes make sleeping a challenge.

Is that view from the window? Stunning, too, the landscape morphing from urban sprawl into desert vistas. The anticipation for the Nazca Lines builds up with each passing mile. Just make certain that your tummy is steeled against any winding roads as we twist our way to Nazca. Very good news is that these coach firms know exactly the need for comfort stops along the way and a quick pit stop also means the opportunity to grab a proper Peruvian coffee and local snacks.

The Nazca Lines: Up in the Air

flying over Nazca Lines

Okay, so, this is the big one – the Nazca Lines. What’s it all about then? So, small planes take you up for an aerial tour, that gives you the only way to truly appreciate the gigantic scale of these geoglyphs. Is that experience thrilling, that’s undeniable; you see the monkey, the hummingbird, and the spider etched into the desert floor below.

The flight itself, it can be a little intense. The planes are small, often, and they bank steeply so everyone gets a peek. So, if you’re prone to motion sickness, consider taking some preventative medicine beforehand. In fact, sometimes the whole experience is over in what feels like a blink and you’re on terra firma reflecting if that stomach knows exactly what happened too. As I was saying, those pre-flight seasickness pills might just be the difference in keeping breakfast down. In short, being prepared is so very important.

Huacachina: Oasis in the Desert

Huacachina Oasis dune buggy

Next up is Huacachina, it’s almost a complete contrast to the ancient mystery of the Nazca Lines. So, think vibrant, action-packed, that is, a proper oasis town nestled amongst gigantic sand dunes. You see the contrast in this oasis almost immediately as we leave the quiet of the archaeological wonder of Nazca, that is, as the screams echo across the sandy dunes here. That oasis offers a shot of energy as the tour now moves up to 100 for some real fun and adventure.

Very common activities are dune buggy rides and sandboarding. Anyway, the buggy ride is, actually, an adrenaline rush, as the drivers take you up and down the massive dunes at breakneck speed. So, screaming is pretty much mandatory. Sandboarding down the dunes is something else too, it’s like surfing, except on sand, and with way more potential for face-planting, literally. But it is ridiculously good fun, that is. Don’t be very surprised that everyone ends up full of sand.

Food and Drink: Fueling the Adventure

Peruvian cuisine

The tour will usually include lunch, typically, at a local restaurant. Peruvian cuisine is something else too, the chance to taste dishes is fantastic; you will experience flavors with the likes of Lomo Saltado or Aji de Gallina.

Just a little note: beverages are typically not included, and, clearly, prices at tourist spots can be a bit inflated, alright. As I was saying, bring extra cash for drinks and any extra snacks you might want. And bottled water is seriously essential, it’s almost guaranteed the desert heat.

What to Bring: Packing Smart

Right, so, let’s run through some must-pack stuff, it is important to make this full-on day much easier:

  • Sunscreen: Seriously, so the desert sun is intense.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: So protection from the sun is vital.
  • Comfortable Shoes: The bus, that little walk around Nazca, dunes. All sorts.
  • Layers: So the desert is scorching during the day but temperatures can drop once sunset appears.
  • Motion Sickness Medication: As I was saying, just in case for the flight and bus rides.
  • Cash: Okay, for drinks, souvenirs, and tips.
  • Camera: Because, seriously, there is stunning scenery you really do want to keep those photos for your memoirs of adventure and the folks at home will want to see how crazy you are!!

Is It Worth It? Weighing the Pros and Cons

Right, so, it all boils down to is that trek worthwhile, what do you actually get, you see. It’s actually quite the intense day trip, very jam-packed, definitely covering some spectacular scenery and exciting activities, yet that comes with a cost.

Very positive points: you see two extremely iconic Peruvian locations, alright, all in a single day. All logistics are all handled for you, in some respects, removing the bother when organizing transport and activities. What is not to love when you have a chance to taste such stunningly diverse scenery in a compact timescale?

Just a little negative point: That journey is exhausting, almost, long periods sat on a bus and very brief flying opportunities mean this experience comes at the sacrifice of precious holiday recovery time. Is the tour quite fleeting, seemingly you never spend an amount of good quality time at any specific location. It may be just something that ticks boxes, naturally, but a lot will find themselves travel fatigued from spending so much time transiting rather than experiencing. That is still expensive too and that budget could often be spread on other Peruvian trips that won’t be as taxing and fast-paced.

If your idea of enjoying a vacation is spending it on long transit trips in order to have had a peek at such stunning attractions in Peru, that trek comes with a large disclaimer. On the other hand, there is an upside too. Peru is almost completely suited for tourists on limited time schedules who seek the reward without much personal logistics to worry in undertaking the tours.
