Review: Lima Canyon de Los Perdidos Full-Day Trip
Alright, so you’re thinking of checking out the Canyon de Los Perdidos near Lima, right? Very well! It’s quite a day trip, I tell you. I mean, it involves some driving and a bit of, like, scrambling around, yet the views? Very worthy of your time. The Lost Canyon is, you see, rather stunning – imagine layers upon layers of rock, carved out by time and a river that’s seemingly decided to get creative. We will go through everything that I can remember. What to expect, how to get there, and if it’s maybe something you’d actually like to do. It’s kind of a long one but there are photos!
What is the Canyon de Los Perdidos?
The Canyon de Los Perdidos, it seems, translates to “Canyon of the Lost.” It’s pretty obvious the person naming this canyon did not have a degree in marketing but their description does seem pretty accurate, actually. It sits, that is, somewhat inland from Lima, Peru, not that far from the coast yet far enough to feel like you’re really escaping the bustle of the city. So, how this place was created…apparently the Mala River has, more or less, sculpted this landscape over eons, which gives the place a feeling that’s quite ancient. The rock formations there, that is, seem pretty wild – think swirls and layers in shades of ochre and brown – giving it an almost alien quality. Very cool.
Basically, this canyon used to be, too it’s almost, entirely unknown to outsiders, until not too long ago. It was, as a matter of fact, ‘discovered’ just recently. Even better, since the place wasn’t that well known there’s a rugged vibe about it; so don’t expect handrails or, like, souvenir shops around every corner. It is really, though, more like raw nature showing off, really. For those after a taste of adventure and some photo opportunities without hordes of fellow tourists, Canyon de Los Perdidos could be right up your alley. Or so, I feel.
Getting There From Lima
So, getting to the canyon? Well, this is where things become a bit trickier, because you can’t, clearly, just hop on a bus straight to the entrance. Typically, your best bet is a pre-booked tour. Many outfits in Lima offer a fullday trip to Canyon de Los Perdidos and, honestly, this seems, seemingly, like the easiest route for most travelers. Tour operators, of course, typically handle transportation, often with pickups right from your hotel or, sometimes, a central meeting point. They might also, more or less, include meals and a guide. Just be certain what they say that it will include; you’d be surprised what gets omitted in a tour description! The one thing about doing a tour in South America, I want to point out is this; almost all tour companies don’t respond that promptly so, in short, allow a great deal of time for things to fall into place.
Yet, that said, the adventurous could, kind of, opt to rent a car and drive themselves. Very understandable! From Lima, it’s roughly a three- to four-hour drive, so you should give yourself some grace, right? You’d typically head south along the Pan-American Highway, and then veer inland toward the Mala region. The drive is mostly paved, yet the last stretch toward the canyon may be a dirt road or, more or less, unpaved, so you would do well to make sure that your vehicle can cope with the roads. That aside, if you decide to drive yourself, download offline maps ahead of time – phone signal can be very spotty in that area. Last, but not least, stock up with, like, water and snacks; shops are almost non-existent in those parts.
What To Expect During the Day
So you’ve arrived. Good for you! You may be wondering, that is, “what am I going to find myself doing?” First of all, brace yourself: there will very likely be walking involved. Seriously! Don’t imagine, that is, an easy, flat stroll. A lot of tours will likely incorporate a hike down into the canyon itself and back up which can get strenuous for anyone that’s just a little, slightly, out of shape, right? I really suggest that you come prepared wearing comfy shoes and layers since the temperatures might, too it’s almost, fluctuate throughout the day. Be aware that tours don’t seem to be tailored towards those in wheelchairs, sadly. Nor those of reduced mobility.
Next? Photographs. Countless. There, that is, seems to be great vistas everywhere, so ensure your camera (or phone) is, sort of, fully charged. Honestly? Do ensure. And when it comes to safety, that is, pay attention to your guides, clearly. They know the terrain and are clearly mindful of making sure nobody does something silly (like edging too close to a cliff). So in a nutshell: Be sensible; stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and maybe a hat. And yeah, expect things, really, to take a good chunk of your day – travel to and from Lima alone eats up a ton of time.
What To Bring With You
When planning your trip to Canyon de Los Perdidos, being prepared is, that is, crucial for enjoying the day without worries, is that right? I’d clearly like to share my experiences to provide you with an idea of what might just improve your trip. * Comfortable Footwear: Expect walking, really! Very necessary. Walking over uneven surfaces requires closed-toe footwear providing both grip and protection. * Sun Protection: High-altitude sunlight? Very fierce! Protect skin by liberally applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF before setting off, also remember that lip balm helps, too! And sunglasses too. Your eyes? Really, very much need that. * Hydration Pack or Water Bottles: I promise! Thirst will attack without a plentiful supply of drinking water (or juice if water seems boring!). I myself prefer electrolyte beverages but you really can never underestimate the value of pure water. Especially in a hot climate. * Snacks: I should know. Hiking always builds up appetites. It might seem better to carry stuff like granola bars, trail mix, or fruit. * Clothing Layers: Temperatures? That’ll probably change wildly. Especially depending on the time of year! Carry both windproof outer layers and warm inner layers; this helps handle variations in weather conditions. * Portable Charger: Photos tend to devour battery life on mobile phones these days; do take something you can use to add extra juice or you will suffer. And it can do a bit more than just this – if, let’s say, it breaks or something then somebody needs to call the extraction squad for you… * First Aid Kit: So consider stuff like antiseptic wipes for minor scrapes alongside remedies appropriate if people in your travel group need things for bug bites or, like, other ailments? It seems useful too, or something that’ll come up sooner or later. Especially if your idea of packing involves taking nothing! * Cash: In those areas, of course, credit cards might seem just like, too, magical devices nobody seems that bothered about adopting. Therefore bring Soles, otherwise maybe USD can get things sorted too; however rates and fees tend to soar way above official ones especially at smaller sites plus remote ones like here…
Is Canyon de Los Perdidos For You?
Well, that seems kind of tough to say from afar but basically…are you an adventurous sort? Someone who doesn’t mind a long day of travel, walking, and, maybe, a little bit of roughing it? Then perhaps! Perhaps it’s just what you are seeking. Alternatively, do you, maybe, picture yourself more of the type to stick to more curated travel plans? Or those that only seem to involve a hop on and hop off bus that you can do at any time without much exertion? Possibly not. This can seem just like one long, long day. And honestly? If that sounds nightmarish…seriously give it a miss!
On another level…honestly evaluate where your fitness level might be at, actually. Hiking that canyon really? Seems quite fun but at points? Can get a tad steep. And there might just not seem to be handrails on most parts either (really almost none). Seriously? You might wish that you invested that vacation in something other than donuts leading up to this so bear that in mind.
And it can be worth it! It would appear that you get rewarded with truly awesome viewpoints once arriving after facing challenges alongside having pictures displaying some rugged but beautiful corner on Earth plus (last but in no way least) boasting that it didn’t have loads consisting exclusively out solely upon visiting tourists either.
