Review: Ensenada’s Famous Puerto Nuevo Lobster Lunch

Puerto Nuevo, a small coastal town just south of Rosarito in Baja California, Mexico, is really quite famous for one particular thing: its style of lobster. A lobster lunch here is that much of an institution, and it draws in visitors from all over. After hearing tales and tales of this seafood mecca, you know, I had to check it out. The draw? Apparently, it’s that the lobsters are prepared in a unique way and served up with all the fixings. Think fresh tortillas, rice, beans, and drawn butter. What you will read on is all about my day-trip and, too, what I think you can expect, should you head down yourself.

What Exactly is Puerto Nuevo Lobster?

At its heart, Puerto Nuevo lobster, right, is different from how lobster is often served in other places. Instead of boiling or steaming the lobster, which are too often the way restaurants cook lobster, here they deep-fry it in lard. Now, you know, that may not sound all that healthy, and actually it probably isn’t, but that gives the lobster an intensely rich flavor and slightly crispy shell. I’d heard tell that this cooking method came to be as a stroke of necessity or some such, as local fisherman simply used what they had. You know, what began as the fisherman’s quick dinner has, anyway, evolved into a regional delicacy.

The Puerto Nuevo Experience

Arriving in Puerto Nuevo can feel like entering, well, some sort of lobster dream world. Restaurants line the streets, each vying for your attention, and anyway all promising you that they, in fact, have the best lobster in town. Now, you know, the competition is very stiff, to say the least! Very soon, you will be ushered in to sit down, usually at a table covered with a brightly colored tablecloth. Then, very soon too, a parade of dishes start to arrive, that is, fresh tortillas in a warmer, bowls of rice and beans, and, of course, that main event – the lobster itself. Really, that is something to behold.

Puerto Nuevo Restaurants

Picking a Restaurant

Selecting the right spot can, right, seem like a total shot in the dark with so many choices available. Very often, personal preference really dictates the experience. Some restaurants may have a more festive atmosphere, complete with live music. You’ll also find that other restaurants tend to be quieter, maybe geared towards a more intimate setting. We chose Restaurant Ortega’s, as a matter of fact based on a recommendation, and actually the food really was quite tasty and the service genuinely gracious. Reading reviews before you go might be useful, just a little, especially on those platforms like TripAdvisor or Yelp. Check for the most recent comments about freshness, service, and, too, the general atmosphere. Another tip? See how many locals are dining. That might tell you a thing or two.

What to Expect From the Meal

The star of the show, understandably, is this lobster. Often served split in half, the crispy shell, so, gives way to the moist and tender meat inside. The whole experience really is an exercise in getting hands-on. You’re encouraged to rip pieces off, dip them in the drawn butter, and, well, then wrap them up in a warm tortilla with some rice and beans. Don’t, yet, be shy to ask for extra tortillas; in fact, most places are that accommodating. A tip would be to also pace yourself. Those platters tend to be rather larger than you might expect!

Beyond Lobster: Other Culinary Delights

While this lobster steals the show, too it’s worthwhile to look into the other items that some places offer. Usually, shrimp dishes are really good, right, especially those cooked with garlic or wrapped in bacon. Fish tacos? Actually, it’s a must-try! Also, it can be good just to give your palette a change after all that richness, just so you’re aware. Do also try the local salsas, that is, typically a variety of flavors from very mild to really, really quite spicy.
