Review: Day Tour From Kandy To Sigiriya Lion Rock & Cave Temple

Okay, so picture this: you are chilling in Kandy, Sri Lanka, perhaps enjoying a real nice cup of Ceylon tea. Then the idea strikes – you fancy seeing Sigiriya, that rock fortress thing, and the Dambulla Cave Temple all in one swoop. That’s exactly what I did, and this is very much my experience on a day tour from Kandy to those bucket-list spots.

Why Sigiriya and Dambulla?

Okay, so these spots aren’t exactly a hop and a skip away from Kandy; rather, they are more of a significant drive, but trust me, they are worth the early wake-up call. Sigiriya, which is also known as Lion Rock, it’s almost like something out of a movie. That’s because it is this massive rock formation that pops right out of the ground, with ancient ruins sitting right at the top. Imagine climbing up there and checking out those views – spectacular is that what comes to mind? As for Dambulla, which is where the Cave Temple sits, well, it is kind of a spiritual and artistic experience. You have got cave after cave filled with statues of Buddha and vibrant paintings that seem to tell a story.

What to Expect on the Tour

Kandy to Sigiriya Day Tour

The tour usually starts pretty early, often around 7 AM. That’s simply to beat both the traffic and the real intense heat. You are more than likely going to be picked up right from your hotel in Kandy. The drive to Sigiriya it takes approximately three to four hours, give or take, but you will get to see a good deal of countryside. You will probably notice the tour guides, and you could say they are usually really well-informed and more than willing to share some stories and facts about Sri Lanka’s history and culture. That is, assuming you’re into that type of thing. Once you make it to Sigiriya, well, brace yourself: you are going to be doing a whole bunch of climbing!

The Climb Up Sigiriya

Now, so I won’t lie to you, the climb it’s almost like a workout. There are something like 1,200 steps, is that not crazy? But really, don’t let that scare you off. Take it very slow, there are plenty of spots to pause, catch your breath, and, more than that, drink in those unreal views. Along the way, you are going to see the famous Sigiriya frescoes, which are ancient paintings of women that are, well, really something to look at. And that feeling when you finally reach the summit? Priceless is that the right word? You will have yourself some panoramic views of the surrounding jungles and you will realize that it makes the aching legs totally worth it. You know?

Exploring Dambulla Cave Temple

After Sigiriya, the tour usually swings by Dambulla Cave Temple, which, relatively speaking, it’s a shorter drive. This temple is very different from Sigiriya, but just as remarkable, is that the point? The Dambulla Cave Temple, it’s also called the Golden Temple, and is this complex of five caves, each stuffed full of Buddha statues and artwork. Now, so what is really neat is that the paintings inside are centuries old, they kind of tell different stories about Buddha’s life and also Sri Lankan history. It’s also a calmer, a bit more serene experience than climbing Sigiriya, and that can be a really nice change of pace after all of that physical effort.

Things I Liked (and Didn’t Like)

  • Knowledgeable Guides: My guide was seriously a fountain of knowledge. He knew pretty much everything about the history, which added a whole new layer to the experience.
  • Stunning Scenery: Both Sigiriya and Dambulla were easy on the eyes, it’s almost as though they were postcard-perfect.
  • Physical Challenge: Now, while the climb up Sigiriya was worth it, you know, just be aware it’s rather taxing, especially if you aren’t in the best shape.
  • Crowds: You are going to have crowds, it is inevitable, mainly during peak tourist season. Just prepare yourself mentally to share the view.

Tips for Taking the Tour

Okay, so here is the deal if you are planning on doing this trip: wear what’s easy, and comfortable, shoes. I really do mean it. That climb can be brutal, and you are going to want footwear that won’t make it worse. Bring loads of water, and then bring some more. Hydration, that really is key, is that correct? Some sunscreen is certainly something that you might consider and a hat. The sun in Sri Lanka, it is intense. Listen to your guide. Those people really know the stuff and will probably make sure you get a whole bunch out of the tour. Just be sure to pack a snack. You can find food to buy but it really does help to have some goodies on hand, too.

Is the Tour Worth It?

So at the end of the day, would I suggest this tour? In a heartbeat I would! Even with the early start and that tiring climb, getting to see Sigiriya and Dambulla it is quite the experience. It’s very much a solid way to soak up some Sri Lankan culture, see the sights, and take a ton of photos that will make all of your friends super jealous. But seriously, be ready for those crowds and that climb, and you will very likely have a remarkable day.

When it comes to tours, it’s a full day that mixes tough climbs with peaceful moments in ancient temples. Sure, you might sweat a little, but you’ll definitely see amazing sights and discover parts of Sri Lanka’s story.
