Review: Calligraphy & Matcha in Kumamoto – A Homestay Experience

Have you considered ditching the usual hotel for a real peek into local life? Well, a Kumamoto homestay, complete with calligraphy and matcha, now that’s quite something, isn’t it? I had the pleasure, it seems, of spending some days in Kumamoto doing just that. I feel, you get a travel experience way more enriching than checking into some regular tourist accommodation. Let’s have a look, I guess, at what this involved and what you can anticipate.

Finding Warmth in a Kumamoto Home

Warm Japanese Home

There’s a lot to be said for choosing a cozy, homely base when visiting another country, so consider that when planning your next adventure. Kumamoto isn’t just another spot, in a way, on Japan’s map. The feeling of being part of somebody’s family, instead of merely another guest, I guess, is something special. So, the family in Kumamoto welcomed me warmly into their residence, which ended up being my home for several days. Their generosity wasn’t some show for tourists; rather, it appeared more like the kindness that they obviously give those close to them, you know?

It felt surprisingly genuine, what with the tatami mats, sliding shoji doors, as well as the aroma, apparently, of home-cooked food drifting from the kitchen. My space was a comfortable room decorated with Japanese items, it seemed. Also, there was a futon that promised sound sleep, and oh boy, did it deliver. To be honest, after long days of exploring, collapsing on the futon felt surprisingly wonderful, I must say.

The Art of Calligraphy

Japanese Calligraphy Lesson

I mean, I’ve tried writing with a brush and ink. I can say from experience that writing calligraphy isn’t exactly scribbling, and you have to focus, I guess. The homestay offered this surprisingly brilliant activity – a basic lesson in Japanese calligraphy, very fancy, you know? I can admit that with some initial trepidation, I walked into their small studio. But, I learned about brushstrokes, posture, and the deep artistic principles behind it, basically. Turns out that it can be quite the history lesson.

The sensei, quite lovely, really, started out patiently walking me through some basic characters. You kind of need, in a way, a very steady hand and intense concentration. You won’t be creating breathtaking art right away; in a way, that comes with many years of work, it’s fair to say. I eventually made something kind of presentable – not pretty, that’s to say. I definitely enjoyed some deep reflection in doing this surprisingly ancient and meaningful Japanese art form, you know?

The Ceremony of Matcha

Matcha Tea Ceremony

Oh, sure, you can just gulp down some fancy green tea latte, and there’s no worries there, naturally, but that’s not even scratching the surface of matcha. As I learned during my stay, participating in the tea ritual ends up being something meditative. I thought that with all that calm that can come from sitting and having tea, it could improve you a bit. First, though, you sit in a specialized, calming room where there’s special meaning assigned to all the gestures made by the tea master, clearly.

I carefully watched as our host began whipping matcha powder along with heated water until he formed a froth. I noticed that you turn your bowl to not drink from the front before sipping; that was quite interesting, honestly. I detected bitterness, yet the lingering sweetness; it sort of complemented everything I savored while enjoying its taste! The whole thing was like pausing and acknowledging the beauty found around us, seemingly.

Exploring Kumamoto and Its Surroundings

Kumamoto Castle Japan

What can you expect if you leave that family bubble and explore Kumamoto proper? You’ll uncover quite a mixture between the historic sites with modern life, frankly. Kumamoto Castle simply has to feature if there’s plans to visit, and it stood amazingly following restorations done ever since a huge earthquake happened a number of years back. To get magnificent scenic sights of the area all around is pretty straightforward from that top floor point in such iconic place. It is almost difficult not imagine those shoguns wandering around, too, you know?

The Suizenji Jojuen Garden definitely offers, basically, another peaceful escape. Beautifully arranged miniature landscapes mirroring natural scenery surround its tranquil ponds – I very much enjoyed simply wandering through it all. Don’t pass up the opportunity either to eat at neighborhood restaurants and savor regional meals like Kumamoto ramen or basashi (raw horse meat), kind of like they eat with a celebratory gusto locally. Every bite tells a small story on culture that only eating delicious, real food would do, I think!

A Real Authentic Cultural Exchange

Authentic Cultural Exchange

Traveling does, by any chance, open the floodgates in letting anyone explore global scenery but living at local accommodations kicks that insight upward for travelers greatly indeed; something, it is, almost transformational as visitors get, basically, so much closer by mingling throughout your local hosts everyday existence more, that. Conversation flowed freely when trying shared suppers which helped build ties much different rather than normal travels – family anecdotes and stories over what occurs about their daily reality flowed rather effortlessly with stories or laughs had at all times then by chance or opportunity too!. My insights within culture would get, perhaps, even further expanded with language classes given; basically words that could, literally, help travelers do very short encounters along main attractions with shops also explored around streets!

It seems those homestays will let travellers help provide so something good that those small enterprises also do not always seem to happen elsewhere through visitor earnings so those stay will give income straight at someone else! That gives you some means that really does go further within all your wallet when using locally had resources with your spending here actually giving that helping nudge along where assistance definitely counts! Basically stay such that at that homestay will encourage someone further with helping someone while traveling by, basically just so, also encouraging better ways for connecting between global civilizations!

  • Experiencing the kindness first hand from locals
  • Calligraphy plus a unique, special meditation class for improving consciousness
  • You would try eating those awesome real, traditional specialties available there too!
  • Taking at supporting smaller scaled economy with more honest tourist experience at best around!
