Review: Bordeaux Full-Day Arcachon & Pyla Dune Trip

So, you are looking at day trips from Bordeaux and thinking about Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat? Honestly, it’s something else. We took the plunge on a full-day trip, and well, it really was an experience. It felt longer than most days; the views, the vibe, and just what we did all stuck with us. I’m going to lay out just what that was like, so that, too it’s almost as if you were there, and help you decide if it is right for you.

What You Can Expect on the Road

Road to Arcachon

The ride there is so, too it’s almost like the preamble to a good book, alright? You start out in Bordeaux, that actually has buildings, a bunch of history, and that really busy city feel. Once you’re outside of it, the view shifts as we go. It’s very much of a picture postcard kind of experience of the French countryside. You get open fields, cute tiny houses that look centuries old, and forests so big that they actually seem to stretch on forever. A good tour sets it up to where you might get small stories about what you see. Like that particular old house has been home to the same family since whenever, or that some stretch of forest has got deer. These bits are welcome because otherwise the drive just gets plain boring. And you want to conserve your energy for the main event. Keep your eyes on the road, and watch as that land starts to change very slowly, right?

Arcachon: More Than Just Oysters

Arcachon Oysters

Arcachon is that sort of seaside town where things actually seem relaxed and that smell in the air has got a bit of salt to it. I’ll tell you that it is famous for its oysters. Most tours toss you right to some oyster place, and they will show you what that is like. Honestly, fresh oysters are something else, so, too it’s almost as if you were pulling treasure straight out of the sea, so to speak. So, even if you’ve tried oysters, you want to try it here. Is that something you want to do, and if the tour does not give you the option, you might check with them? So, you might be just wanting a walk after, that actually happens too. The beach is right there; that it feels like the sand stretches far. The water’s cool but really not unpleasant, so, too it’s almost as if you feel the urge to go for a paddle. Is that something fun? Shops also line up right against that beach, that has a ton of souvenirs. They usually sell stuff at a slightly cheaper rate than you might find elsewhere.

Scaling the Great Dune du Pilat

Scaling Dune du Pilat

The Dune du Pilat? Honestly, it is something to behold. Pictures very rarely do it justice. People actually refer to it as Europe’s tallest sand dune, that is something. It is so incredibly large that, so, too it’s almost as if you were thinking you are in the Sahara for a minute instead of France. Climbing that is really tough. So, there are stairs, but usually, those end part of the way, and even then, they make the walking tough, just so you know. You walk directly on that sand for that last bit. Each step feels like two because you are just sinking so, too it’s almost like the dune is swallowing you whole. But honestly? Is that a climb worth it? Once you get to the top, well, you see why. That ocean looks so different, so, too it’s almost like looking at a blue blanket, it stretches out to where it might as well be the end of that planet. Back behind you, the view runs onto some huge forest. That view is something so completely unexpected, so it might catch you off guard, I mean really. Very honestly, I have found very few sights in France or elsewhere that match what you see up there.

Things to Consider Before Booking

Consider Before Booking

Now, a couple things to keep in mind. First, alright, that trip actually makes for a full day. I think we went something like 8 or 9 hours; very much a marathon. If you have some issue sitting for a good stretch or trouble with heat, maybe skip it. Also, I’m gonna give you a piece of truth: a trip really makes a difference. So, shop a little, too it’s almost. The better tours have tour guides that actually can tell you what is around. Plus, you need a tour that doesn’t leave you rushing. Pilat actually does not seem all that big, but you might still want an hour or two just to go up and look. As a matter of fact, just plan for it. Those are all really worth it; after that is when your experience goes from pleasant to, really, the memories of a lifetime.
