Review: Binh Tay Market & Cozy Cooking Class, Vietnam

Looking to spice up your trip to Ho Chi Minh City? Maybe you’re thinking of swapping those touristy spots for something, that feels way more real? This could be something different? Well, I was searching for just that thing. So, I stumbled upon the ‘Binh Tay Wholesale Fruit Market Visit Cozy Cooking Class’. It sounded pretty awesome! I’m so excited to share everything about it – from the super hectic market visit to whipping up some tasty Vietnamese treats.

First Stop: Binh Tay Market – A Sensory Overload (In a Fun Way!)

Inside Binh Tay Market

Alright, so, picture this: it’s super early, the sun is just peeking out, and you’re smack-dab in the middle of Binh Tay Market. I mean, it’s almost like stepping into a completely other universe! You know? The place is absolutely filled to the brim. Piles and piles of colorful fruits, veggies, and just about everything else you can imagine are there. Then, you see scooters zipping past, people shouting out prices, and the aroma of like, a thousand different spices hitting you all at once!

That market, often, called Cholon, isn’t just any old market. In fact, it’s one of the city’s biggest. It’s seriously got a huge historical past that adds a certain weight to everything. My guide, he was super knowledgeable and, actually, pointed out some cool spots I definitely wouldn’t have seen on my own. We checked out vendors selling exotic fruits I’d never even heard of before – think things such as dragon fruit that look like they are straight from a sci-fi thing. It’s a wild, wonderful mess, alright?

And here is something kind of neat: you actually get to haggle a bit with the vendors! Don’t be afraid to try it; it’s kind of part of the whole thing, like. I scored some, pretty decent deals on ingredients for our cooking class, so, it’s totally worth it. One vendor even let me try some crazy spiky fruit (rambutan? maybe?). So, it was an adventure for my taste buds. Experiencing the everyday life and the energy of Binh Tay Market like this, for sure, made me feel way more connected to Ho Chi Minh City.

Cozy Cooking Class: Time to Get Hands-On!

Vietnamese cooking class

Right, with our bags now overflowing with fresh ingredients. We made our way to the cooking class. Thankfully, it was held in this really quaint, homey kitchen. It almost, felt like escaping the craziness of the market and finding, such a chill space. So, the class was actually kept really small, only a handful of us. Therefore, it allowed for some one-on-one help from the chef, who, truly, was super patient and funny.

And get this, we learned to make three totally classic Vietnamese dishes: fresh spring rolls (gỏi cuốn), flavorful beef noodle soup (phở bò), and yummy Vietnamese pancakes (bánh xèo). Now, I’m really no chef. In fact, I pretty much always burn toast, but, you know, the chef broke each recipe down. Therefore, even someone like me, a person who has issues boiling water, could follow along. What really makes it is chopping the veggies, mixing the sauces, and learning that each step, kind of, is super vital.

What I found kind of neat was that we got to use the ingredients we bought at the market! We knew where everything came from, you know. It sort of, gave us a great feeling about what we were making. It wasn’t simply a cooking class, right? I think that it connected you to your meal, somehow, and, that created a special kind of appreciation. Getting the techniques taught felt awesome, like learning knife skills to mastering the art, really, of balancing flavors, and made the day worth it.

The Food: A Taste of Vietnam

Vietnamese food

Seriously, the best part was actually getting to eat what we cooked! Yeah? It’s like, after spending all that time prepping and cooking, enjoying a meal together was truly rewarding. And get this, every dish exploded with freshness and realness that you simply don’t get in restaurants. So, it was like everything, seemed more vivid.

Of the bunch, I think, that the spring rolls really, sort of, stole the show. Maybe, they were delicate and fresh, filled with herbs. After all, these had that satisfying crunch from the veggies that was simply, unmatched. But, honestly, making our own pho was a special thing. From, the aroma that fills your kitchen to carefully simmering that delicious broth. Even the savory pancakes had a wonderful crisp and savory goodness! When you combine these flavors, they just have a unique style. Honestly, the entire meal totally opened my eyes and taste buds and just left me craving more!

I, you know, even got the chance to ask the chef about all the different ingredients. Such as fish sauce and various regional herbs. Getting, more knowledge of these little things gave the whole experience, really, an added depth. He shared loads of personal anecdotes and traditions about food. He helped the cuisine gain this additional emotional weight as opposed to it just being food you eat.
