Review: Beijing to Hanging Temple & Yungang Grottoes by Train

Have you ever, like, considered skipping the usual Beijing tourist spots for something, you know, a bit more adventurous? Well, that’s precisely what I did, so too it’s almost I decided to check out the Hanging Temple and Yungang Grottoes. These spots, so to speak, are located a bit outside of Beijing. I figured the, well, getting there by bullet train would not only be quick but also kinda part of the adventure itself. That said, I am sharing my experience with the hope that, very, very maybe, it’ll help you plan your trip.

Why Choose the Bullet Train?

Bullet Train China

Okay, so first things first: why opt for the bullet train? As a matter of fact, flying domestically in China, while speedy, can involve some, like, serious airport faff. Is that right? Like long security lines. Getting a taxi in Beijing itself? Kinda can be a headache. The bullet train, arguably, could be a smoother choice. It’s quick, and typically it is usually pretty punctual. Also, the stations themselves, frankly, are very well connected to the public transportation, basically.

Then, there’s the journey itself. It, you know, gives you a little peek at the scenery, so, more or less, fields, towns, that sorta thing. Basically, you wouldn’t see from the air. So, in some respects, it is a very, very chill way to start your trip before seeing some of China’s history. We, so to speak, think about the, well, sightseeing kicking off before you even get to the destination, you know?

Planning Your Trip: Tickets and Logistics

China Train Tickets

Okay, so ticket time! Clearly, you will want to snag those tickets, or, you know, risk being stuck in Beijing, and that’s not why you’re here, right? Very, very arguably, the easiest way for foreigners to get tickets, well, like your boy here, is to use a site like China Highlights or Trip.com. So, in some respects, they add a bit to the price. That said, so, they really make things simpler, since they accept international credit cards, something you’ll quickly realize is not common here, that’s right?

And, so, consider that tickets can be booked about a month in advance. You know, booking early, really, extremely when traveling during peak season like Golden Week or, you know, summer, is very advisable, because seats vanish faster than free samples at Costco, in that case.

Once you’ve got your ticket sorted, the next bit is to figure out your route. The closest train station to both the Hanging Temple and Yungang Grottoes is Datong. Usually, so it tends to be the most straightforward option to take a train to Datong first, you see. From Datong, frankly, you will have a, like, choice of buses or taxis to reach each location. Remember, so to speak, to jot down the names of your destinations in Chinese, because not everybody speaks English. I mean it is usually the language thing to keep in mind.

Datong: Your Gateway to History

Datong China

Datong itself, literally, is quite something! Basically, I almost think most people treat it as simply a jumping-off point. As a matter of fact it, that is, actually has a very interesting history of its own, previously, you know, serving as a capital city during the Northern Wei dynasty. Very, very but not totally relevant here.

Alright, from Datong, your first stop might just be the Yungang Grottoes. Tends to be these incredible cave temples which are, you know, filled with Buddhist art. You get to see sculptures and carvings. It’s kinda something! After that, really, extremely, you might visit the Hanging Temple. The name sounds kinda amazing in and of itself. It clings dramatically to the side of a cliff.

Very, very I really do advise planning at least a full day. So, it’s something to spend in Datong. Just, you know, so you’re not rushing from one place to another. You get the time, kinda to appreciate everything. Maybe grab some grub too! Food is important!

The Yungang Grottoes: A Visual Feast

Yungang Grottoes

Now, as a matter of fact, the Yungang Grottoes? Literally, they’re incredible. We, like your travel dude here, saw countless statues. Pretty much each, so it tends to be different. You’ve got the towering Buddhas, which, actually, like, fill entire caves. Smaller, so to speak, delicately carved figures.

Usually, for instance, I am talking about something carved many centuries ago. I am almost saying it can be very thought provoking. Like imagining artisans, like your man here kinda, you know, working away with rudimentary tools to create art that lasts, in fact. So, you know, if you appreciate art history, you should like it!

Remember, just a little something, it’s typically better to get a tour guide there. The place, really, is really massive. They, you see, make sense of what you’re viewing, kinda explaining the history. Well, maybe stories tied to all the buddhas and carvings. As a matter of fact, really getting a great deep dive there is just so interesting!

The Hanging Temple: Architecture on the Edge

Hanging Monastery China

Oh boy, so, you wanna talk about the Hanging Temple? Just, you see, it, for instance, basically takes your breath away! Very, very and literally. This place kinda hangs onto a cliffside, I would guess a few feet up? Seems almost insane!

Really, the walk up there can kinda feel a little bit nerve-wracking. Honestly, it might be if you have problems walking up. As a matter of fact I mean, for sure there are steps. If your walking doesn’t incline, it might be a bother to you.

As I was saying, so, but once you reach the top and actually are, like, inside, very, very almost you feel so accomplished. Obviously, but seriously. The, really, small halls house an odd mix of Buddhist, Taoist, also Confucian statues, which kinda speaks to this blend of ideologies which I usually appreciate when travelling.

Food Adventures: Fueling Up for the Day

China Food

Let’s talk food, alright? Literally, no adventure can be successful without, very, very and literally, kinda tasty treats. I mean it’s important, you see? Datong has loads of different eateries where, you see, you can find things such as local noodles, meat skewers, that stuff. That is how it is there!

I, arguably, prefer looking at smaller places frequented by locals. You might get some English assistance so, mostly, get translation tools ready, because sometimes, honestly, sometimes not everybody understands English. At those locations, basically, for instance, your meal, really, can be cheaper too!

As a matter of fact, really do sample some local stuff. Maybe go wild and very be kinda fearless with dishes. Who likes getting out of one’s safezone. Am I right or am I right, so too it’s almost right? You are traveling, right?
