Punta Cana Saona Island Day Trip: An Honest Review

Punta Cana Saona Island Day Trip: An Honest Review

If you’re planning a trip to Punta Cana, chances are you’ve heard about Saona Island. It’s like, *the* day trip to take, very picturesque beaches and crystal-clear waters are the draw, it’s a tiny island just off the mainland. So, the big question really is: Is a Saona Island day trip worth it, you know? And if you decide to go, what’s, like, the best way to do it?

That’s exactly what I’m hoping to explain here, giving you the lowdown on a Saona Island excursion, the kind that comes with an open bar, which seems to be pretty standard, actually. We’ll go through what you might expect, talk about what stood out to me, and help you decide if it’s, like, the right choice for your vacation, maybe? Let’s see what’s involved!

Why Saona Island is So Popular, Maybe?

Turquoise water Saona Island

So, why is Saona Island, so popular? Well, there’s a bunch of pretty good reasons, I guess. I mean, first of all, look at the pictures! We’re talking postcard-perfect beaches, fine, soft sand that feels great under your feet, almost, and the water is seriously turquoise, you know? It’s like something straight out of a travel magazine, very beautiful.

Then you have the whole “escape from reality” thing, too, maybe. Punta Cana can be, you know, pretty touristy and crowded, basically, but Saona Island is much more laid-back and secluded. It’s like stepping into a different world, so tranquil and peaceful, quite refreshing. Lots of folks say it’s part of a protected national park too, so there’s not much, like, development on the island, still has that raw, untamed appeal. I found this out on another site though. This information may vary so you will have to research yourself.

Plus, you’ve got the convenience factor, which might appeal too. There are tons of tours leaving from Punta Cana every day, or nearly every day anyway, so it’s relatively simple to organize, I mean, there’s all these booking agents and ads around every corner, very easy. You just book your spot and, more or less, everything else is taken care of. They pick you up from your hotel and drop you back off again, so that’s easy and straightforward. What’s not to like so far? A trip, literally, on smooth sailing?

What’s an “Open Bar” Saona Island Trip Like, Possibly?

Catamaran Saona Island excursion

Okay, so, what can you actually anticipate, really, from a Saona Island day trip that, usually, includes an open bar? Well, these tours, I think, typically follow a similar kind of formula. This is my own impression though so do some research before accepting my word as gospel. Usually there’s a hotel pickup, normally in an air-conditioned bus, then a scenic drive to a port where the boats depart, and after this your tropical dream starts.

The boat ride over to Saona Island is normally part of the experience, like your, so very much. Most tours go by catamaran, which can be really, seriously fun, with music, dancing, and that open bar flowing freely, it’s almost a party on the water, you know? I have seen speedboat options though, you should probably shop around.

Once you actually reach Saona Island, it’s pretty much beach time, relaxing on the sand, swimming in the ocean, soaking up the sun. The tour normally includes a buffet lunch, normally local dishes. That I tried at least! After lunch, more time to chill out, and maybe grab another drink from the open bar. It’s very important to hydrate while in the sun. I suppose there will be water in the open bar.

The ride back to the mainland is, sometimes, a bit different. Some tours take a speedboat, others stick to the catamaran. Along the way, most trips actually include a stop at the ‘Natural Pool’, which is basically a shallow sandbar in the middle of the ocean where you can get out and take pictures with starfish, I think, (but please, you know, be respectful of the wildlife). It depends on the tour provider and some areas ban contact anyway.

My Own Experience: What Really Stood Out, Too

So, my own Saona Island trip was, basically, a blast, literally. It, for one thing, totally lived up to the hype. The beaches actually looked as gorgeous as they did in all the photos. Swimming in that super clear water, the type you never actually see back at home, so warm and inviting, very pleasant.

The open bar thing, definitely, made the trip a bit more festive, perhaps even special. I’m not, obviously, a big drinker, I would say to proceed responsibly if it is there. The people on my boat, some were having a good time with that, dancing and singing along to the music. I will say though, like most package tourism, so it can be cheesy and somewhat predictable. Just manage your expectations if that’s your personality type. But it does get you moving.

I think the food, very was decent, actually. It was a buffet-style setup with a bunch of standard Dominican dishes. There’s probably something for most, usually. Be sure to inquire, I guess, if you’ve got allergies or other dietary requirements.

If there was something that did standout? Perhaps it’s the Natural Pool. It was kind of, almost, surreal to be standing in the middle of the ocean, waist-deep in crystal-clear water, like nothing else that I experienced before that, or since! It may, very well, be something you won’t find at home.

Yet, I feel that the journey to Saona Island does get very busy. Don’t get me wrong, it will always be quite breathtaking to be out in this exotic Caribbean area. The waters there can get overcrowded from other people, though! Even with our tour provider making their best attempts for some sense of order on the tour. Perhaps you, yourself, will appreciate this but prepare that it will most likely get crowded.

Things To Consider Before Booking, Then?

Ok, prior to you booking something, bear this in mind! While Saona Island is amazing, so a few potential downsides, so you want to keep in mind. I found that some people will naturally enjoy this tour more than other people, and this is fair! First of all, the trip, can take up an entire day, basically. With the travel time to and from your hotel, plus the boat ride, it can easily be a 9-10 hour commitment.

Saona Island, while being secluded, might feel touristy because this island’s beaches are heavily trafficked. You won’t ever get the same privacy as having it to yourself. I want to prepare you by highlighting how you might be competing with, likely, lots of different tourists around!

As highlighted above, you might want to plan ahead in the event that crowds just might potentially annoy you? In some cases this type of trip may be suitable, maybe an adults only experience. I have no idea! Do some extra Googling, I’m sure there’s information somewhere on different trip options! The content that I create might offer generic advice but you still have to be wise about making a purchase!

So, Is It Worth It, Finally?

So, getting down to the big question: Is a Saona Island day trip with open bar actually worth the expense and the time? I think that depends, obviously, on what you are searching for during your time off. You will be the best authority to ask yourself this, prior to purchase.

If you would like picturesque beaches, you need to leave the regular tourist haunts, want to soak up the sun, have a little bit of partying involved and some relaxation, and do not actually mind being part of a tour group? Then yeah, probably! You’re almost sure to be pleased, with the caveat that, this might come down to expectation management.

But, then again, if you tend to dislike big crowds, dislike all-day excursions, if all you wanted was complete peace and quietness? This would be something you dislike more. You should weigh it properly.

But hey, whatever your call actually is, Saona Island, I would like to think, really is stunning! If it seems interesting to you, be ready to get something worthwhile out of your tropical escape from reality!
