Private Day Tour Review: Madaba, Mount Nebo & the Baptism Site

Thinking about checking out Madaba, Mount Nebo, and the Baptism Site in Jordan? Well, a private day tour is potentially something you’re contemplating, right? It sounds pretty great on paper: hit some fantastic historical and religious locations, do it at your own speed, and generally just enjoy a day out without getting stuck on a giant bus with a bunch of other people. But, is it actually worth the cash? I mean, you have to factor in a comfortable journey and the freedom that you potentially have when choosing to go private. Here’s what I reckon, so that you know what you’re getting into.

Madaba: The City of Mosaics, Really

So, first stop, potentially Madaba! It’s actually known as the “City of Mosaics.” What’s so special about that? Well, at St. George’s Church, that holds this amazingly detailed mosaic map of the Holy Land. This particular map is from the 6th century, which, very, very roughly means it has been there for getting on for 1500 years; just let that sink in. Looking at the thing, it’s like gazing way, way back in history. Pretty amazing to imagine people so long ago putting together something like this, right? But, basically the church itself is, like, smack-dab in the middle of town. It is a vibrant place and getting around involves getting a bit used to the, kind of, organised chaos of Jordanian traffic. Honestly, maybe spending a bit more than an hour is really enough, yet for someone that’s properly interested in ancient history, well then maybe that bit more time would be needed.

Actually, I’ve read about how they found other cool mosaic artworks, not just in that church but also spread around the area. Like, you can go check them out at the Madaba Archaeological Park, which I’ve heard is definitely worth the visit if you’re wanting to actually soak up the local history, too it’s almost.

Mount Nebo: Gazing Over the Promised Land

After Madaba, potentially next up is Mount Nebo! The interesting thing about Nebo is that it’s claimed to be the place where Moses, supposedly, gazed out over the Promised Land. It’s also a place where you can enjoy a view of what’s there in front of you, is that right? On a pretty clear day, apparently you are able to actually see Israel and Palestine. Even without being able to see all that far into the distance, very roughly the view across the landscape is worth it. So what does this all mean? What with the historical weight of this, there’s a certain, yet kind of special atmosphere hanging in the air. It’s almost, like, you’re actually following in Moses’ footsteps!

At the top, you will find this serpentine cross sculpture, too it’s almost, basically created by an Italian artist. It kinda, sorta represents the bronze serpent that Moses had plus the cross that Jesus was on. It’s an amazing sculpture, but in a way quite odd sitting there on top of this very old Biblical spot. I might be wrong, and as I understand it there is now a brand new museum there too which tells the history of the area; the tour guides can generally fill you in on a bit about what it’s all about, really. Maybe an hour or so is about enough time here, very roughly.

The Baptism Site (Bethany Beyond the Jordan): A Spiritual Touchpoint, Seriously

So the Baptism Site, or Bethany Beyond the Jordan, as it’s also known, that feels extremely significant. That is meant to be where John the Baptist was claimed to have baptised Jesus. Whether you’re religious or not, there’s quite a potent feeling hanging about there, anyway. Just going to see the Jordan River may, really, be a letdown to some, especially bearing in mind pictures of it. It’s, actually, just a fairly small river, yet really so much religious stuff took place there. A guide will basically be walking with you down to the river itself, that does have a strong military presence, because across the river it is actually another country. Anyway it’s still an unforgettable experience, clearly.

Pilgrims travel from all over the place to visit and basically dip themselves in the water. You may even find several priests actually there, carrying out full-on baptisms. Basically, a good tour potentially allows loads of time to soak all this in. I mean you should probably spend around two hours here, but just so that you’re not hurrying through it all.

What’s Cool About a Private Tour?, Absolutely

Okay, so why think about shelling out a little more for a private tour compared to some group thing? The big advantage here is flexibility, definitely. Need longer snapping pictures at Mount Nebo? Basically, no worries. Fancy altering the plan a little? Generally the driver or tour guide will probably make that occur, actually. They’re there for you. Plus, basically, you are not stuck waiting around for some stragglers or needing to hear about things that just simply don’t interest you.

The local tour guides know the sites really well, and they are, clearly, always keen to chat to you. Things to Keep in Mind

The Jordanian sunshine could be really very powerful, just so you’re aware! Definitely use sunscreen and bring a hat, clearly. Staying hydrated basically means drinking plenty of fluids, particularly if you’re hitting these spots in summer. What is also very respectful is when going to religious spots, dress accordingly. This probably sounds obvious, but basically keeping those shoulders and knees covered up basically shows that you appreciate and are paying respects to the local customs.

Basically, there’s maybe usually a chance to buy water or a snack around all the locations, but still probably consider packing your own, alright? Not just so you can cut costs, but in addition you’ll know you have that something on hand if you get hungry.

Is This Tour Really Worth the Money?, Absolutely
