Pigeon Point Tour Review: A St. Lucia Paradise Experience

So, if you’re thinking about checking out St. Lucia, you’ve probably heard whispers about Pigeon Point, or, Pigeon Island as it’s otherwise known. It’s almost like one of those places that everyone recommends, yet you aren’t quite certain why. Is that white sand really as heavenly as people say? Does the history grab you as the tour guides tell you it does? Well, the place has history from way, way back – think pirates, and naval battles – not to mention, is there anything there that’ll entertain kids. Hopefully, I can offer some insight. I took a trip there myself and thought I could give you the lowdown on what makes Pigeon Point worth a spot on your vacation itinerary.

Getting There and Initial Impressions

Pigeon Point entrance

Now, just so you know, actually reaching Pigeon Point is relatively straightforward. More or less, the majority of folks traveling that way take a taxi or hop on a shuttle from their resort. Anyway, if you’re staying in the Rodney Bay area, you’re looking at a pretty quick ride. On arrival, the first thing that hits you is that clear blue water. I mean, it’s very, very beautiful. It really does seem like something from a postcard. The entrance fee is actually fairly reasonable (around $10 US, last time I checked), and from that moment, that small fee is pretty much all that is standing between you and your day spent relaxing, swimming or exploring – all sounds pretty tempting, doesn’t it?

Beach Bliss and Water Activities

Pigeon Point beach activities

The beach at Pigeon Point? Honestly, it’s idyllic, with plenty of space to throw down your towel. If that is something you want to do. Unlike some other beaches I have been to, that can feel a bit crammed, Pigeon Point offers a sense of serenity. A bit of peace, which is really rather something. The water is calm and shallow near the shore, too, making it great if you have children. As a matter of fact, the kids seemed to like building sandcastles and splashing around in the shallows.

For the slightly more adventurous types, that lovely water lends itself so easily to a range of activities. Seemingly, snorkeling is quite popular. You can often rent gear right on the beach. Very handy if you haven’t brought your own equipment. So too there are paddleboards and kayaks available to rent as well. These seem to offer a really nice way to explore the coastline at your own pace. When I went kayaking, I actually managed to paddle around to some little hidden coves that were super cool and peaceful. At the same time, if lounging is your jam, there are places on the beach to rent chairs and umbrellas, enabling you to just relax with a good book and perhaps a cold drink.

Exploring the Historical Side

Fort Rodney Pigeon Island

That said, it’s not all about the beach bum life; Pigeon Point is also steep in history. Fort Rodney, perched atop one of the island’s peaks, tends to be a must-see. Anyway, the hike up is manageable, and you do get some stunning panoramic views from the top. When you get up there, very clearly, you’ll spot remnants of the old military buildings. Just imagine what that might have been like back then.

Fort Rodney, basically, played an important role in the battles between the French and British. I mean, back in the day. The displays provide pretty interesting facts about the island’s role in Caribbean history. If history is something you’re into, do allocate a little bit of time to explore this. After the climb, a bottle of water at the top is just what you need. As I say, that view, too, it is well worth the effort.

Food and Drink Options

Pigeon Point restaurants

Anyway, when you start to get a bit peckish, Pigeon Point has a couple of places to eat, too it’s worth noting. So, too there’s a range of different food on offer. From local Caribbean fare to some very standard international options. At the end of the day, you know, that kind of thing. The restaurants tend to be very casual, perfect if you’re after a laid-back lunch. At the same time, there are little beach bars dotted around where you can actually grab a Piton beer, or perhaps something else that’s cold and refreshing. Honestly, there really is not much that can beat that sort of a moment – a drink in your hand, looking out at that perfect ocean view.

Tips for an Amazing Visit

To actually make sure your trip to Pigeon Point goes as planned, or is even better than expected, perhaps, here are some handy bits of advice:

  • Pack Smart: So too much sun, right? Just a little sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are a must. Bring a beach towel. A bottle of water will prove its worth when you make it to the peak.
  • Arrive Early: Pigeon Point often seems to be a popular place, actually. By arriving when it has just opened, if that’s possible, you’re more likely to grab a prime spot on the beach and perhaps avoid the crowds.
  • Bring Cash: While some spots accept cards, basically it’s always a really sound idea to have some cash on hand for smaller vendors. Or, for spots that don’t offer credit cards.
  • Check for Events: Pigeon Point actually plays host to various events and activities, right, at times. It is almost as if, checking the local listings can make your visit all that extra interesting.

Is Pigeon Point Worth Visiting?

You know, taking everything into account, Pigeon Point gets two thumbs up. I mean, it has got that all in one thing going on. Beautiful beaches for the relaxation side, historical landmarks for the sightseeing part, and an atmosphere that’s hard to beat. In some respects, if you’re in St. Lucia, missing Pigeon Point is perhaps a thing you may just live to regret. So too plan a full day there, so that way you’ve got a chance to experience the beaches, climb to Fort Rodney, and perhaps simply soak in that lovely island vibe. So you know, enjoy.
