Speaking of sunsets, everybody goes on about these, yet seeing the sun going down in the desert is, yes, special. The sky transforming into that canvas of colors—oranges, purples, pinks—actually creates a view that’s hard to believe. It truly feels otherworldly, in some respects.

However, here’s maybe something someone who wants that Instagram shot might be less aware of: The best spots tend to get crowded. I had this image of being alone out in the quiet expanses of the desert, in contrast I ended up sharing the moment with what felt like, almost, the entire internet population. Trying to discover a spot without hordes of other photo takers, that required serious maneuvering. And that serene, tranquil desert moment? That was kind of diluted with the murmur of, like, hundreds of conversations.

What to Bring: Packing Essentials

Let’s talk about packing, more or less, this is crucial. The desert isn’t actually like a walk in the park, after all. Here are what are probably important bits you’ll maybe be happier knowing before you head out:

• Water, lots of: Seems sort of really obvious, but then again, hydration is that basic. That desert heat is not going to be messing around.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat: Protect yourself. The sun reflects off of the sand, which can be pretty intense.
• Layers: The desert temps swing quickly, and pretty dramatically. Mornings and evenings could be very cold. So be sure that you pack clothes that might actually keep you warm.
• Camera: Since you want to remember that awesome scenery (and hopefully get that gorgeous sunset shot, still).
• Snacks: So, sometimes tours might provide these, confirm ahead so that you have backup. This could actually make all the difference for folks with low blood sugar.
• Small Backpack: Since you want to keep your hands totally free. So that they’re free, you know.

Is a Camel Adventure in the Peruvian Desert Worth It?

Now, that ultimate question: that camel adventure really worth the time, money, or effort? Despite certain bumps and masses of people in otherwise peaceful area? Yes, that is probably a conditional yes. While the experience isn’t actually quite what I fantasized about, I found, that standing amidst that immensity of that desert landscape actually gives that certain sense of wonder. If you go for a good guide who helps takes proper care of the animals, goes with tiny groups, or have fair expectations, there’s actually a big opportunity to collect unforgettable memories. That vast Peruvian desert kind of brings you out of, as if, day to day living.

What’s my tips when considering making those memories? To lower disappointment, you can research well, prepare thoroughly, and go in with open mind. By going forward, you get this amazing adventure. It has that ability, very unique from things near cities, or water, in particular.
