Panama Rainforest Zipline: Is this real life?

You ever just get the itch? The one that screams, “Climb a tree and fling yourself off it?” If so, the Panama City Rainforest Zipline might just be what you didn’t know you needed. I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want to zoom through a jungle canopy? Thinking about this whole thing makes me remember watching cartoons where the hero swings through the forest! That said, this isn’t animation. I’m talking about the real deal, the honest-to-goodness kind of escapade you scribble onto your bucket list and then start figuring out the soonest you can mark it done. So, lets chat a bit more about this experience!

Gearing Up for Airborne Fun

So, prior to any crazy swinging or speeding through tree tops, it starts with, unsurprisingly, strapping in! At first glance it looks rather intense. It kind of makes you feel like you’re about to launch from a plane or something! Then again, what is ziplining if not, like, a controlled version of jumping out of a plane? Anyway, I kid. But what I’m getting at is you’re not going to feel unsafe at all; especially with the guides showing you everything as they’re going along with you. If anything, you feel totally prepared, ready to rock and roll… or rather ready to zipline! One nice little detail is that most tour companies walk you through using all your gear and going over everything. Making sure you have a good fit, good positioning. And then, just like that, before you know it, you’re ready to experience an adventure!

As a heads up, there usually are some things that the park staff want you to consider before getting geared up. Little things that matter a lot, when you stop to think about it. You may not think wearing big earrings is a thing, but you’ll need to take those off. The harness and helmet just plain won’t fit properly with larger sets on your ears. Small rings and simple necklaces are OK. Really long, dangling necklaces can pose the risk of getting in your way during the tour, however. This may go without saying, though. Additionally, it’s probably wise to consider the humidity in Panama. No need in slathering yourself with oils and creams just to attract extra sweat, or create more potential hazards while high in the tree tops!

Typically, tours do tend to go out rain or shine, as well, which means having a solid understanding about keeping glasses secured is smart. They usually provide straps, or encourage people to have them for times like this. Now, not that I want to give you the impression of doom and gloom! If anything, a little rain will likely just turn the temperature down a notch while you zip, which might make things extra special. Just think of the pictures! Seriously, I can’t leave this part of the chat without mentioning how much safer you will be if you ask for assistance, if you’re concerned or unable to get things positioned just right with your helmet. Make sure it is snug, and make sure that strap isn’t going anywhere! What I am saying, here, is don’t be scared to slow down and do things right!

Ziplining Safety? It’s a Big Deal

zipline safety

You know, people ask about how secure they should feel while doing things like this, and that’s fair! It is only natural. Seriously, that’s very fair, I believe. Any place that offers these tours should really highlight safety checks, right? It may very well offer you peace of mind to hear what guides will sometimes announce. For instance, you should feel really good knowing they typically announce line weight limits, double checking every piece of equipment out loud and in the open! Seriously, it is one thing to look at equipment that has official stamps on it, or has been recently inspected. But listening to somebody on staff confirm, verbally, that all is in good condition? Honestly, that does actually matter to me.

Let’s be honest, one of the big differences between cartoon-style swinging and using cables in the forest actually boils down to trusting someone else to keep your stuff in good working order! Anyway, what is especially cool to me is how they seem to keep a special emphasis on brake assistance. It is, like, built in and ready to go. Even if you flub your own attempt to stop well, or slow down, the company tour set up has layers upon layers to assist, and, more often than not, save your butt from colliding hard. Even those guides working out on the platforms at the trees have backup brake methods! Which, by the way, makes me that much more comfy trusting them.

Another biggie that puts me at ease when selecting a good zipline tour revolves around knowing the staff on location aren’t new to this game. Seriously, you want people who’ve been running these lines day in and day out, know all the safety rules backwards and forwards, and have, like, super quick reaction times! As a quick suggestion, it would probably serve you well to scope this part out a bit, when thinking about who to tour with! Also, it is definitely comforting when companies highlight the number of guests they serve per year. I guess the thought here is just that numbers don’t lie. A super successful company is probably successful due to its great service and concern with keeping the lines up to par!

What to Wear? What to Bring?

hiking clothes

Alright, so what should one consider when getting their wardrobe in order for a Panama zipline gig? The easy recommendation is light clothing! You’re going to sweat a bunch because of humidity, obviously, but that is sort of part of the experience too. But if you plan properly, that’ll save some discomfort for you in the long run. You’ll do just fine if you bring quick-drying shirts and moisture-wicking under layers. It is totally one of the better moves you can make for this kind of excursion, really. Basically, just imagine hiking, but in the sky. Then dress for that scenario.

Thinking ahead and having pants may even prove very effective against bugs. Who doesn’t love fewer itchy spots? If you’re really worried, though, you might consider pre-treating those fabrics with anti-bug spray too. This goes almost without saying, though. I always seem to recommend doing that before really going anywhere, it would appear. Even better, it isn’t that difficult. You might even consider bringing the spray with you on tour, for some quick reapplication mid way through. A quick thought on bug spray… there are multiple theories, bro science, personal anecdotes, and lots of stuff you hear from locals. Some of that probably has some merit, for sure. In my experience, though, simply knowing what is scientifically confirmed just feels like my preferred approach, even if the locals seem to know better than the labs!

Lastly, shoes! No matter how many times I fly over to some tropical destination or another, and swear I am just going to rock some stylish slides? I still almost always feel smarter when I take some athletic footwear with me. Seriously, you just never know how handy they will be. On a zipline tour? It feels kind of like one of the best practices I have found for getting the most joy out of it. Some good tread, breathable, lightweight… yeah, those things matter! Anyway, if I really haven’t been super clear with any of the advice I am passing out today? Seriously just wear something akin to your running set! You’ll likely find that feeling secure with the connection you have to those platforms just adds extra sprinkles to the fun of it all.

Is the Panama City Rainforest Zipline Right for You?

zipline adventures

Okay, okay, so here we are: should you give this tour a shot or what? Obviously I cannot make this determination for you, of course, but you might hear my enthusiasm in my verbiage! From what I’ve experienced with the canopy in that spot, I almost want to answer for you. You know? My family? Big fans! People with no experience? They became instant fans of the whole thing. If nothing else, you are definitely safe with your choice of vacation destinations with this particular zipline locale.

With my traveling experiences I can confidently recommend most visitors in Panama seriously carve out time in their schedule for one of these things. However, you will want to have some degree of comfort with heights. Duh! But more than that, honestly, I do believe most healthy people who like an adrenaline kick will leave that park feeling super pumped, ready for more crazy cool experiences.

That said, if you really dislike any of those conditions I just rattled off? Then probably it isn’t for you! I won’t pressure you. Not even a little bit! Although it kind of seems fun to sign up anyway. If you went? You could say you at least gave the forest your best, yeah? Anyway, whatever you decide! Enjoy Panama! It is one of the coolest places on earth for outdoor adventure.
