Palermo, Segesta, Erice & Salt Pans Day Trip: Full Review

Sicily, it’s a bit like this treasure trove of ancient history and scenic beauty, that actually has so much just waiting to be discovered. This ‘Palermo, Segesta, Erice, and Salt Pans’ tour? Very much a sampler platter of all the best things Sicily has to offer. I wanted to share a detailed account of it, for you. Hopefully to provide insight if you are thinking about making this exciting, very worthy experience, you know.

First Stop: The Energetic Charm of Palermo

Palermo Italy

Palermo, that’s very much where the whole shebang gets rolling. Right away you find yourself caught up in the heart of the city. Now, as a heads-up, Palermo is really, like, super intense, so it might be too much if you aren’t ready to be in the middle of everything right from the get-go. The streets can be rather hectic, that too it’s a very different scene if you are more familiar with quiet towns.

We started things off with a visit to the Palermo Cathedral. Its mix of architectural styles, from Norman to Baroque, is seriously impressive. After this we walked towards the Quattro Canti, at the crossroads, too, there is all sorts of amazing buildings and fountains everywhere you turn, is that amazing? Be sure to check out the Pretoria Fountain too, that is rather risqué, but a very notable piece of art, also.

Segesta: A Glimpse into Antiquity

Segesta Italy

Segesta comes next, which, very, very much shifts gears into Sicily’s Greek history. What to look forward to, I suppose? Well, it’s all about the Temple of Segesta. Picture this: a stunning, incomplete Doric temple, just standing there, perched on a hill with absolutely sprawling views. It appears to be quite remarkable, how it has managed to stand the test of the passing years and that actually transports you back in time, so it really feels that way.

Here is what’s kind of cool about it. It was left unfinished. Some speculate there might have been some local conflict that made the construction stop, is that just interesting? It is quite something to behold actually. Also make an effort to soak up the panoramic scenery because that by itself is something else, too.

Erice: Medieval Charm and Breathtaking Views

Erice Italy

Erice? Now, it is something that offers a completely different experience altogether. That has to be one of the most beautiful hilltop towns around actually. After a scenic drive, with twists and turns leading up the mountain, is that how you get to Erice? Just when you show up there is just a lovely medieval town, that is just waiting, with stone streets and tiny alleyways. If it’s a nice day, which is what happened to me, expect gorgeous, wide-open views of the Sicilian coast. I’d recommend wrapping yourself in the history.

Be sure to visit Castello di Venere, very, very much located on top of a cliff. I’m fairly sure it has Roman roots too! Now the views all around? Very photo-worthy, in a very awesome way. Take a stroll down the little charming streets as well, you can grab some almond pastries while you are there. It’s fun to do, also.

The Marsala Salt Pans: A Landscape Like No Other

Marsala Salt Pans Italy

After that it is the Salt Pans. I suppose this place gives you such a distinct atmosphere from everywhere else. You see these shallow pools of water stretching out as far as the eye can reach when you’re looking out across the horizon. The water, a little bit pink from all the algae. You might be shocked, it might appear that nature does its job here like it’s creating art actually. They even have windmills that add a nice touch to the area, is that something that you like?

Here you have a unique view for photos at golden hour when the sun goes down over the salt pans and the sun seems to set forever. That is definitely photo time, actually.

Tour Logistics and What to Anticipate

Group Day Tour Italy

Okay, so that this is very much a full day tour that is probably going to last between 9-10 hours. Comfortable shoes is that an important item to keep in mind? Oh yes! Remember too, that there will very much be a considerable amount of walking too. Some tours might have alternatives where you are in a smaller group but generally anticipate using public transportation sometimes for getting everywhere. If you are someone that needs assistance or doesn’t handle heat very well then very do that pre-planning for it.

Making the Most of the Day

The best way to do this kind of tour to Sicily in a day like this? A little planning can go far actually. If there are some places that particularly excite you, be sure to prioritize them, so you have enough time at each. Pack a water bottle so you can hydrate especially if going when there are sunnier skies, too. Most of all bring your camera to catch all of the memories being made during your very worthwhile travel around Western Sicily. Very worthwhile memories.
