Our Lady of the Rocks Boat Tour: A Detailed Review

Our Lady of the Rocks

So, you’re thinking of taking a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks and Perast Old Town from Kotor, Montenegro? It’s almost a must-do when visiting this part of the world. I went on the tour myself not so long ago, and I’m here to give you the lowdown on what you can expect, the stuff I liked, and also, just a little, the bits that could maybe be improved.

Booking the Boat Tour

There are so many ways to book this tour, too, it can feel like you’re swimming in options. You could do it online, which I guess is really convenient. Numerous sites offer tickets, and they very often let you compare prices. In that case, you want to read the fine print concerning cancellation policies. Also, just a little, you should check what’s included. I booked mine right there on the waterfront in Kotor. Lots of vendors try and get your attention, all offering tours. It’s very easy, very quick. Sometimes, it can be slightly cheaper if you haggle a bit, or at least, that’s the impression you get. Still, be warned, when the boats are really busy, you might not have quite as much leeway when it comes to getting a discount.

What to Expect on the Water

boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks

Basically, the boats are typically fairly comfortable, so that makes the cruise a nice experience. It’s more or less a short ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, and while you are cruising, you can take in all the scenery. Is that something you would appreciate? You see the Bay of Kotor, which, naturally, is a view that tends to make it on postcards. You might find that some tours offer commentary about the local area, like your captain telling you the history, or basically, sharing anecdotes concerning local life, very colorful too, which can really enrich the trip, you know?

Our Lady of the Rocks: A Close Encounter

So, the stop at Our Lady of the Rocks is something people look forward to the most. As a matter of fact, that small island that was created by fishermen dropping rocks there ages ago seems so special. Still, get ready, like your time there will probably be about 20 to 30 minutes, which I’m sure sounds quick. This almost gives you sufficient time to look inside the church, take lots of pictures, or perhaps browse the souvenir shop. That’s an activity, which is typically full of the regular tourist trinkets.

Inside the Church

The church, which looks reasonably compact, has walls draped with paintings and offerings. Basically, the interior is a feast for the eyes, and sometimes it really has an intense atmosphere. The story goes that local seamen built this, very much piece by piece, in accordance with an ancient pledge. Is that really special, though? So you can take it easy taking pictures. Think about what it symbolizes. This may basically change the experience into something very touching, too.

Perast Old Town: A Step Back in Time

Perast Old Town

Next up is Perast, that picturesque little town not so far from the islands. When you dock there, that gives you maybe an hour or so to explore, like the narrow streets, or eat at some cafe. I actually enjoyed this the most. The vibe there is almost like you went way back. You will like it. The old stone houses have the most beautiful backdrops against the mountains or water.

Things to Do in Perast

Things to Do in Perast

So Perast is super small, or at least, that’s the impression I got. Still, there’s lots to keep you occupied. Taking a relaxed stroll, I find, lets you enjoy the architecture. Are there also some interesting shops to see, though? Also, the seafood at restaurants, honestly, tasted so good, very fresh, with views of the bay, and you get the vibe, you know? When you only have an hour, naturally, I guess you will need to more or less make it a quick visit, like see some high-level views. Otherwise, you will have time to see, or visit every part of it.

What Could Be Better?

Boat tour improvement

As a matter of fact, this excursion comes highly recommended. I noticed a few things where maybe they might improve, but just a bit. A few of the boats will likely get really crowded, especially in peak season. This more or less takes from how much you enjoy yourself if you seem crammed in, too. Also, not all the tour guides are good at interacting in English. Or basically giving facts about what is around you. It might really improve things, too. So if seeing Our Lady Of The Rocks and Old Town of Perast is your mission, take the tour! Just make it early in the morning, like when there might be less people.
