First Impressions: Arrival and Dojo Atmosphere

Arriving at the dojo, anyway, it can feel like stepping onto a movie set. The smell of polished wood, maybe a bit musty like old gym socks too, fills your nostrils, just a touch. Seriously a real sensory blast. That initial bow, or “rei,” that happens there, it really does carry weight. Arguably more than expected. In a way that space, just so spartan, so focused, that encourages focus. Seemingly more intense than hitting the gym back home, that’s for sure. Maybe it is just me, naturally a little awkward but in a good way.

Typically, dojos are these intimate spaces, aren’t they? Almost small in that space, that could amplify every sound. More or less, like the shuffle of feet, so crisp sound the striking of the shinai. Pretty much like they are echoing around you, and you haven’t even picked up a sword yet. Okay, there’s a palpable sense of history, actually.

The Instructors: Sensei and Teaching Methods

Sensei. That, too it’s almost a mystical title, right? So, the instructors at the Osaka kendo workshops, well they usually carry that title with an air of genuine wisdom. It’s almost that you want that wisdom too. It doesn’t mean they are ancient, right? By the way, some, anyway they are young, maybe experienced, but that teaching goes deep. Kendo techniques and history are more or less, just delivered, basically with passion. You could say you can feel their energy, really.

Now, teaching style, just a bit strict you think? Definitely very patient. Seemingly more encouraging than you ever thought possible. Probably a lot of repetition, is that they want muscle memory embedded? Yet, any way, explanations, alright they seem always clear. Obviously if I wasn’t very good anyway, even Sensei seemed alright and helped, basically.

Arguably they broke down each movement. Seemingly in smaller chunks, probably if needed, more or less, that they wanted each person, so they grasped it, more or less properly. Honestly like a beginner like me, right. I definitely struggled to mirror those strikes you know.

Training Sessions: What to Expect

Physical demand. Okay, the sessions themselves. As a matter of fact intense. Okay warm-ups stretched everything, very soon I was burning every muscle there! Then the basics, swinging, footwork, very all seems challenging at first. Yet, the sessions moved, literally seamlessly, just probably so fast!

Now practice with partners. Okay, really tested what you’d learned. Very awkward at times I did want to be very clear anyway when doing this! That coordination just there, really is needed and maybe important! Any way there should be equipment provided though so that is a plus. Even my bogu armour sort of protected me anyway! Okay, maybe smelling a lot but hey right, who cared?

Cultural Immersion: More Than Just Kendo

Okay workshops offer immersion way beyond kendo, right. Almost eating lunch there. Even tasting something unknown! So, the instructors took us to a spot in the neighborhood. Virtually, everything just to be real! Even you did get to meet other enthusiasts to get a taste of local stuff. I almost tasted okonomiyaki! Honestly tasted yummy right!

Exploring that stuff. Seriously important! Okay, local temples too so all seem cool. More or less I learned so much about that life as it should, pretty good so! By the way! Do research the spots when you see it next! Right!

Accommodation and Location Convenience

Okay accommodations can be a gamble almost, I would say. Okay you get traditional ryokans so really good anyway! Pretty much that you slept on futons almost right! Maybe convenient near the dojo area. So convenient too even to the subway! Anyway so good after training! Literally! Almost perfect location too, very lucky to go near to Dotonbori so good I can literally go there!

If I went a bit far almost there was food everywhere which is fine. Seemingly always full of life though! So, very nice location, that almost anyway helped relax too so!

What I Learned: The Kendo Mindset

Now what you gain so what anyway you got right. Not too complex though! Arguably, more just new sword skills, it also enhanced your own concentration almost. Right almost just respect too when going! So probably I learned just the value also just staying a bit calm and humble right! Also what the kendo mindset sort of did in getting the best in yourself there right.

Okay this experience is literally cool by the way I think! Maybe, by the way a real way too, with a love and also almost enthusiasm that matters anyway too. Okay really the beginner anyway the basics are right there! That I found there really good anyway right! In a way, more just there maybe just physical condition too! Okay right right there probably.

Alright a kendo experience in Osaka should, and seemingly that is priceless anyway that goes! By the way memories too that stays there always right!. Okay new skill is also almost culture also, pretty important in being great! Arguably probably this investment really enhanced you when it’s great and just awesome, pretty! Arguably it helped with new passion there so yeah, really I just totally wanna go back so okay!
