Thinking about a day out from Tirana that, that takes you across borders to a place filled with history and stunning lake views? Then a day venture to Ohrid, North Macedonia might be just what you’re after. Ohrid is one of those spots that, that kind of sticks with you, not just because of the picturesque scenery but, but because of the unique vibe that the place has. What follows, is my review and some thoughts about, about how you might plan your day adventure to make the most of it, what to watch out for and what, what not to miss. Why Ohrid for a Day Trip From Tirana?

Ohrid offers a pretty incredible escape because, because it feels totally different from Tirana. Remember that too it’s almost, almost always worth double-checking the bus schedules a day or so before since, since the times can change a bit. A return bus in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM, usually gives you enough time to see the major spots and get, and get back to Tirana at a reasonable hour. Now, to be real with you, the ride can be pretty bumpy in sections, so I’d bring a pillow or, or something for your neck and back! Bring, too it’s almost a good idea to, to have snacks and drinks, since there aren’t tons of options on the way and that, that journey will eat up around 4 hours.

Must-See Spots in Ohrid: A Whirlwind Tour

When you get to Ohrid, head straight to the Church of Saint John at Kaneo so you can, you know, get that picture-postcard view. The church is on a cliff that’s high over the lake, it just gives you the most fantastic look around. Then walk down into the Old Town area because there too it’s almost, almost got a load of cute little shops and cafes that are, that are usually pretty busy with tourists and local people alike. Take some time to wander around Samuil’s Fortress too; you can, you know, climb up, look over Ohrid and the lake, and, and maybe try to think about all the history that’s happened there. It costs like your, like your €3 to go in, but it’s worth it for those sights alone. Oh, that Lake Ohrid is pretty special so why not get yourself on one of those short boat ventures that goes along the coastline because you can get another view of the town from the water, as I was saying, a pretty chill thing to do and is, is just nice, you know?

A Bit More Detail: Seeing Ohrid’s Sights

If you only do a handful of stuff, you really do want to make sure Saint John at Kaneo Church is right up there at, at the top of the list because that small church is very beautifully sat on a cliff; is that maybe one of the prettiest spots in the Balkans? After you see this, that, you’re gonna want to go stroll around the Old Town so you can grab some lunch at, at one of the local restaurants, since most serve traditional Macedonian fare like your, like your Tavče Gravče (beans) or Ohrid trout. Meandering via the streets does allow you to, you know, soak up all the local vibes and gives you a chance to haggle at, at one of the little stalls where you might find, say, some jewelry made using Ohrid pearls (though do remember those can be a bit on the pricey side). Also, consider a brief exploration into the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid. That spot dates way, way back to Hellenistic times and, as a matter of fact, the Romans later remodeled it, so standing there kind of is, is something else, isn’t it? As previously mentioned, that climb up to Samuil’s Fortress, well, it really does give you a wide look over the entire area. Anyway, that place has seen a whole load of rulers from, from the time of Samuel of Bulgaria to, to the Ottoman Empire, a visit offers a kind of brief run-through the turbulent history that, that the place has known. You can just let your mind be cast back, it might be something you appreciate!

Dining in Ohrid: What to Eat

Food wise, Ohrid’s is, is an experience in itself. When you are there, have some Ohrid trout because you won’t find it anywhere else – loads of the local places do it grilled or baked, or, as a matter of fact, even stuffed with walnuts and dried fruits if you are lucky. I’m very keen on it myself, just very simply grilled with lemon and some local greens. Also worth a go is Tavče Gravče—think beans baked in a pot—because it really is a Macedonian dish. Every eatery has, has their spin on it. Plus, the Balkan bakeries are pretty fantastic for some byrek (flaky pastry filled with cheese or meat), you might pick some up so you can snack when, when you take a walk, or similar. Don’t forget that the Macedonian salad (shopska salad) is good, since too it’s almost like a fresh mixture of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, and some grated cheese, like your, like your feta; maybe get some with your lunch so you can say you’ve tried it.

Things to Think About When Planning

A few things to consider are, are bringing some Macedonian Denar (MKD), or euros because you can sometimes use these instead, but be sure so you can check what the rate of exchange will be. Certain places do take credit cards, so I’d say, find out beforehand. Know too that the local language is Macedonian so some basic phrases could, could possibly prove handy, but lots of people will speak English. Also be mindful, there can be quite a bit of walking to get around many of the sites because Ohrid is really hilly, you may have to take breaks and bring comfortable footwear. Last bit, just, you know, look out for common tourist scams like your, like your inflated taxi fares or goods being sold, you want to be cautious like you normally would when visiting any busy place. Is a Day Trip to Ohrid Worth It?

If you get up really early so you can plan carefully, then taking a day to check out Ohrid from Tirana is something worth doing, that too it’s almost like getting a look at two very separate worlds. Ohrid gives you culture with, with its historic spots and that lakeside chill. As a matter of fact, the trip itself may be long and maybe not be especially comfortable, though seeing the beautiful scenery as well as all that Ohrid has to offer makes it well worth all the effort, if that makes sense. It gives you a pretty unforgettable experience and really shows you even more about what the Balkans are like, which is what you hope for when you visit a new spot, actually.
