Ninh Binh Day Tour: Bai Dinh, Trang An, & Mua Cave Review

Okay, so you’re thinking of checking out Ninh Binh for a day, right? That is, you are thinking of visiting Bai Dinh Pagoda, Trang An, and Mua Cave all in one go? I mean, it’s quite a plan, a very full day to be sure. Yet, with some sensible planning and a reasonably good guide, it’s definitely something you can actually pull off. I want to share like my experience doing this very tour, that way you can, perhaps, decide if it’s right for you too it’s almost.

Bai Dinh Pagoda: A Place of Enormous Scale

As a matter of fact, Bai Dinh Pagoda wasn’t really like what I was ready for. It’s not just a temple, it is, after all, a gigantic complex. I mean, the sheer size is something that will very probably hit you the moment you arrive. Anyway, there are numerous temples, halls, and statues and that takes some exploring, very much dotted across a big hillside.

First of all, there is the electric car. Basically, it transports you from the entrance to the main area. Is that, this might sound, kind of, lazy, but honestly, you’ll want to save your energy, too it’s almost, since there is plenty of walking to be done still. You’ll want comfortable shoes, is that very important. It is, after all, an uphill walk, and it can get fairly tiring, to be honest, if you are unprepared.

You do get great views of the surrounding landscape when you get to the top; still, I reckon the architectural details of the pagodas themselves are even more awe-inspiring. We are talking elaborate carvings and gilded statues, which I would suggest you give yourself a while to really appreciate. First of all, keep in mind, there can be large crowds, more or less, especially during peak season, which possibly affects the experience just a little.

By the way, some areas require modest dress and that is, for your information, and while it’s not strictly enforced, you know, it is definitely something to be aware of. In conclusion, Bai Dinh Pagoda is, in my opinion, worth visiting due to its massive size and the impressive craftsmanship that is on display.

Trang An: A Boat Trip into Paradise

Well then, Trang An is a different sort of experience altogether; it’s possibly a boat tour, too it’s almost, down a quite scenic river, through a number of caves. By the way, the scenery is remarkably stunning with tall limestone karsts reflecting into the waters. What do you know, it creates something of a magical atmosphere.

Is that, each boat, normally holds a couple of people and they are paddled by local women. I will say, they are very skilled at manoeuvring through some fairly tight spaces inside the caves, is that impressive to be sure. In the caves, things can get quite dark and at some spots, you will have to duck to avoid hitting your head. Still, it all definitely adds to the adventure, as a matter of fact.

Anyway, I would reckon you take the time to soak it all up, rather the calm of the river and the sound of the paddles. After all, it is definitely a peaceful escape from city life. And seriously, you get some amazing photo opportunities, if I’m being honest, therefore, bring your camera and maybe a waterproof bag for it. I think the boat ride usually lasts around two to three hours, and you will probably visit a couple of temples along the way. As a matter of fact, make sure you bring water and some sunscreen, too it’s almost, as there’s basically little to no shade out there on the water.

Mua Cave: The Climb is Worth the View

So, Mua Cave, or Hang Mua, has possibly one thing going for it, is that possibly an amazing panoramic view, really, that just requires a little bit of effort to actually reach. Of course, before getting to the views, there are several steps, rather a lot of steps, too it’s almost, climbing up the mountain.

Although, I am going to level with you, some parts of the staircase are really pretty steep and can be tiring, particularly during the hot months, to be honest. Still, there are places where you can stop and rest on your climb up; even more than that, the higher you get, you know, the views just keep getting better. So it may, actually, inspire you to carry on, if I’m being honest.

And when you make it all the way to the top, there is, in my opinion, the dragon statue overlooking the Tam Coc rice fields and let me tell you, that is truly magnificent. I think you could easily spend at least an hour here at the top just soaking up that surrounding landscape and snapping a bunch of photos. Really, in the end, while the climb is a challenge, I reckon the breathtaking views make it actually worth it.

Making the Most of Your Day Tour: Tips and Tricks

We might as well talk tips. Is that, doing all these locations in just a day certainly needs some very wise planning. In my opinion, starting very early is probably best so you are capable of avoiding the bigger crowds and the heat. I am saying booking a tour package is probably worth it because that takes away some of the, perhaps, headaches from transport and timings. Very well, check what the tour contains; first of all, ensure the transport between the locations is provided. Oh yeah, see that it includes entry tickets and meals, basically.

But then there’s what to wear. Well, lightweight clothing is, I would reckon, the key to staying cool, particularly in warmer months. If I am being honest, comfortable shoes are really non-negotiable considering all that walking and climbing involved, by the way. Okay then, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, might be all useful in protecting yourself from sun exposure.

Remember the guide: a well informed guide will enrich the experience through adding information, and sharing interesting stories that you would miss alone. With that said, consider a couple things. Respect the culture in dress, behaviour and remember to hydrate, too it’s almost, because Vietnam can get pretty hot.

What I Liked (and Didn’t Like) About the Tour

So, overall, there’s what I thought. You know, there were loads of highlights from the day tour to Ninh Binh, for sure, especially like the Trang An boat trip. To be honest, there is just something pretty magical and something else, rather calming about silently moving down river through all of those caves.

Well, the view from Mua Cave too, I thought, it was worth the climb, honestly. As a matter of fact, you see those panoramic vistas that are actually unforgettable. First of all, I appreciated that, although packed, it certainly gave something of an insight into Vietnamese history, plus culture thanks, particularly, to Bai Dinh Pagoda, really.

But I’ll tell you, there is the one downside; that would possibly be that at certain times of year those locations are really popular with groups and individual sightseers, therefore, it got kinda crowded; really, this is not exactly the tour’s fault, more or less. After all, popular places just attract crowds; however, it still impacted the, arguably, otherwise peaceful atmosphere sometimes. That is, I felt quite rushed sometimes, in fact, and that meant that I could not completely explore or totally appreciate each spot.

In a nutshell, it comes highly recommended that you take your time when visiting, should you have the luxury of spreading that visit across a couple of days, and therefore experience it, possibly, on a much deeper level.
