Nelson’s Self-Guided Tunnel to Town Cycling Tour Review

Considering doing the Nelson’s Self-Guided Tunnel to Town Cycling Tour through Mapua? So, it is almost an appealing thought for anyone wanting a bit of adventure mixed with scenery. I mean, the name itself kind of suggests exploration, freedom, and some exercise, right? I thought so, too it’s almost when I decided to give this biking route a try. Hopefully, this will give you everything you require before getting going.

What Makes This Cycling Tour Special, Actually?

Mapua ferry

Very well, Nelson’s Tunnel to Town Cycling Tour stands out in some respects from all the normal bike rides for a few reasons. It is that this option combines a bit of urban exploration (the “Town” part) with some nature, history, and, a pretty iconic tunnel, you know? Unlike a flat cycle on a straight, boring path, this thing mixes in some interesting stuff, and I would add the ferry to that!

A thing I appreciated? It isn’t fixed; I mean, very really, you are in charge of your own adventure, you know? There isn’t anybody hurrying you or holding you up. Basically, you can kind of pick your pace, so I went quickly by the vineyards that looked great. Very frankly, freedom like this really is a thing that adds to the appeal.

Tunnel Vision: More Than Just a Dark Hole, Basically

rail tunnel cycling

Okay, let’s get to the good bit: that old railway tunnel! That part has something special about it, I reckon? It’s dark, a bit wet in places, and certainly cooler, still, and cycling through a slice of history as if going via some old railway tunnel is like a cool sensory shift. That reminds us that a town will come!

Really, you aren’t wrong in presuming, it’s not all pitch dark – you will get some light at each end, very similarly to most tunnels. So, you won’t really need super strong lights, but having something to see well in front and for cars coming is what I would do, because it’s a tiny bit spooky, so do prep the safety basics before, because even though this a simple ride you want it safe.

Starting Point: Setting Off From Nelson

Nelson city center

So, starting in Nelson’s center is ideal, even though depending where you find some accommodation may give you some issues in traffic. And so, I found it’s quite smooth finding parking early morning in town to get the legs moving with this experience. What I suggest is setting off kind of before everybody else because it gets rather lively, and there are quite a few hills that tire the unready; what with all the day trippers arriving.

But getting on a bike does present this experience, though. Then you can get out the city streets; just sort of heading out on the trail and looking at views towards your first break – the ferry. With that first point done, as a matter of fact you will probably have caught your breathe and can get excited for the coast road.

The Coastal Breeze: Nelson to Mapua

Coastal Views Nelson

As a matter of fact, I feel like this leg of the tour, cycling from Nelson to Mapua, it’s pretty refreshing, seriously, I feel like as you cruise along, you are able to feel the sea breeze. Now you are on that part of the cycling, very apparently your lungs thank you as the hills are out of your way – still your bum does complain later!

Honestly, this is how you unwind, seeing glimpses of the water in the distance, or fields too it’s almost depending what road you find is easier with your style of bike. At the end of the day though, keep those eyes peeled, so there are spots where the path seems to mix with traffic, alright? It is not always separate so do be vigilant when heading out for all those awesome experiences.

Mapua: More Than Just a Ferry Stop, Surely?

Mapua Wharf

Reaching Mapua after the ferry is kind of rewarding. You would think getting there would make things quiet, or be similar to other small coastal ferry-stops in other regions. Right? Well, do hang around before turning around to start going back to Nelson. As I was saying, Mapua has a lot, you know? It has all sorts of interesting stops that include cute spots right there, at that wharf I like. I reckon some local art galleries that have bits from artists in the town, or even eateries overlooking the water.

Basically, treat Mapua like kind of a mid-adventure treat. Anyway, grab a bit to eat, walk by some shops or even go out into the trails round this location. Actually, it sets the stage for the way home.

Food and Refreshments: Fueling Up for the Return Trip, Obviously

Mapua cafe

Alright, let’s have food because it is required. Well the Tunnel to Town trail gives many a place, seriously, because that area does its fare share to tempt you – that will get you sorted, you know? Very really, some cafes and restaurants here serve everything too it’s almost to do with keeping going, you know? This is cycling; it needs more than some bananas, I reckon.

As a matter of fact I saw anything. At the end of the day there is something for your desires, alright? Stop anywhere for refreshments or a main to take with you if you do not wish to add extra stops as that road heads to back the way you came; what I advise is filling water up or some energy before facing those slopes.

Returning to Nelson: Completing the Circle

So, heading back really is more enjoyable knowing all those treats and rests came before that moment. Even after all that time you’d likely spent in Mapua, it all kind of fades when facing the rest of those streets again. But very really this part has something really interesting. Like your view goes backwards and you catch something, and everything shifts as to seeing those streets at first. Obviously, with the sun going a different direction you see the details very differently!

Okay, take it all easy when heading back into Nelson, obviously, since by then any energy would be kind of depleted. Well there are paths around this district so watch out on getting into that town.

What to Pack: Being Prepared Makes for a Better Time, Actually

cycling accessories

Actually, having everything really ready to go, will for sure keep everything much fun when it starts getting fun to cycle. Basically here’s is a reminder: check out my items to add.

  • Helmet: Do make your noggin safer than never!
  • Water: Actually, keep that hydration good, because the slopes demand those fluid reserves!
  • Snacks: Very well, there has to be any treats.
  • Bike Repair Kit: Make sure this has a couple of tubes and all the gear with all the things for that simple work.
  • Lights: Even at high day that tunnel gets rather less lit; that rear lights will let you appear at dawn.
  • Cash: While several will handle that card this makes some more smoother that way

Final Thoughts: Would I Do It Again?

Nelson cycling path

So, did I dig doing the Nelson Tunnel to Town Cycling ride by Mapua? Very really. Still this adventure makes a great slice of cycling, ferry hops, scenery, that old tunnel, what else can you want more. Okay some climbs might get difficult to traverse as always; and remember about prepping at anytime or be comfortable getting some walks.

To me, if anything like seeing how regions can offer exploration but freedom – then here starts your new hobby as an avid biker for exploration and discovery. Well all your needs will determine if this suits what that exploration does well – so check my opinion. Right now?
