Why Choose Mutianyu? So, Less Crowds, Great Views

Okay, so, why Mutianyu of all places? Now, some parts of the Great Wall get seriously packed. And I’m not saying other sections aren’t awesome, yet Mutianyu tends to be a bit quieter, actually. You might find yourself breathing a little easier there. And it’s not just that, it’s the views too. Picture this: gorgeous mountains stretching out as far as you can see, very pretty green forests, and that amazing Wall snaking across it all. The Driver. So, Friendly and Helpful

Okay, so, let’s talk about the driver. Right on time, he showed up with a smile, and he spoke really good English, actually. On the way to the Wall, which is just a bit of a drive from Beijing, he gave me all sorts of random stuff. You get some details about the history of the Wall, local stuff, and you realize it helps pass the time and sets the scene for the day. He was happy to answer my many, very random, questions too. Plus, very important: he was a really safe driver.

At the Wall. So, Options and Freedom

So, here is what I mean, once we got to Mutianyu, the driver gave me some information. Now, here’s the very nice bit: he didn’t rush me, okay? You get, like, a bit of information about different routes, the cable car or chairlift options, and places to grab a quick bite. In some respects, the choice was really yours, basically, explore however you liked. So, he told me where to meet him later, and that was it, and I was free to go and have fun!

The Mutianyu Experience. Actually, Breath-Taking

Alright, walking on the Wall, oh my goodness, it is simply amazing. The views, as I said, they were just so awesome. Actually, I spent a lot of time just wandering and taking a whole load of photos, which might sound basic, and there were far fewer folks there than I’d thought. I walked a fair way along the Wall, enjoying the mix of restored and original sections. You’ve got all the watchtowers too, and the views they provide are insane, basically! Okay, so heads up, there are some pretty steep sections, but you can take it very slowly if you want. What I mean is you’re free to go at your own pace.

And the facilities are all reasonably well maintained, you get decent bathrooms and that sort of thing. You have all the essential services for tourists, so no worries.

Pros and Cons of an English Speaking Driver. Very Much Worth It

So, here’s what I think: the convenience of having an English-speaking driver is absolutely top. Very easy transportation, good information, no stressing about language problems. What I mean is, it makes things super simple, especially if you don’t speak Chinese. Very likely, you will get great views and less crowds. A small downside? Well, it is going to set you back a bit more than doing it on your own with public transportation. I can tell you though, you may agree that the price difference is absolutely justified for a stress-free visit.

So, Tips for your Trip

  • Very important: Wear comfortable shoes. There will be some walking, maybe a bit of climbing.
  • Very, very important: Bring water and snacks, okay? Staying hydrated and keeping energy levels up is something to think about.
  • Keep some cash with you, that may sound obvious. While some places do take cards, it’s usually handier to have cash, you know.
